The Danish School Where Children Play With Knives

SDGundamX says...

@Gratefulmom

Hey, if parents want to send their kids to a completely unregulated daycare where the "education" is having kids swing sticks around in the rain and -20 degree weather, that's their choice (though it sounds to me more like ancient Sparta than a modern Kindergarten).

As for me, on the other hand, I prefer my daughter get the scientifically proven lifelong benefits of a proper preschool education. See this book for an example of the scientific evidence I'm talking about.

All the science I've seen on kids playing outdoors (including that on outdoor kindergartens: see for example this article) shows that around 1-2 hours a day outside is enough to see significant results. My daughter gets at least that much in the park after kindergarten most days when the weather is nice, so I'm not so worried about her development.

Zimmerman's Lawyer's Opening Statement Is a Knock-Knock Joke

Lawdeedaw says...

Okay...first thing I must say is this (And this is not to you Trancecoach, you're a smart cookie I respect, this is just a general statement to everyone to include myself.)

Learn the fucking law if you speak about it!

This is Florida! (Think Sparta.) Florida is a different breed than even other states such as Texas and Arizona.

Zimmerman seems to have 100% legal rights to have shot Martin under our stupid laws. Even supposing it was a dick piece of human shit move, the bigger question remains--is the government allowed to convict a piece of shit who doesn't break the law? If so, our society is so fucked.

The law here is pretty clear and many examples exist of it getting people off. You CAN chase someone down and start a confrontation, then shot them. Hell, you can be part of a drug deal gone bad and kill someone and get off. Someone can throw a beer bottle at you and you can shoot them.

A similar situation to Zimmerman's happened with a guy named Dooley. He was black though, old, and the guy he shot was a white veteran--so he is fucked. He will have a Public Pretender, so he is fucked. Same as Zimmerman, I believe he is pretty covered by the law, even though he flashed a gun by pulling up his shirt.

@hpqp I think the Iliad is a perfect reference to how the Greeks vied the role of the Gods in war. To your end, though, people like Plato actually spoke against the Gods and called them "bad influences", and old wife's tails. Mainly, what I speak to is the any difference, no matter how small, can be used as a rallying cry. A Sparta might say "Let's go kill some Athenan bastards!" Reading history from that time is really hard, as the historians were less about telling "facts" and more about telling stories, about convoying the feeling of the day. In that, from my readings of the ancient historians, it was also a lingering justification.

Edit: O ya, and I forgot to mention, Socrates was put to death for "Corrupting the youth from the teachings of the Gods". That has to count for something!

How can you assert that "they surely did a part"? I call BS unless you can provide some historical evidence.

Very interesting and worthy of watching. There is more than we don't know than we do know.

More to the point, how do we know what is known is truly known (by knowledge, I might right and true belief). Epistemology is my favorite philosophical topic

Many of the Greek city states pledge to a Patron God: Poseidon at Corinth, Hera at Argos, Zeus at Kos, Athene at Sparta, Tegea and Athens. Different parts of the Nile also had the same type of Patronage. It is debatable how much of a role they played in war, but they surely did a part.

"Immortals" - Trailer (from the producers of 300)

spoco2 says...

Wow, that looks like all different shades of shit.

Seriously sick of this spate of 90% CGI, poorly scripted and acted rubbish. Bleurgh.

In the same vein, I can't believe that Sparta got to season 2 on TV. A couple of weeks back got around to watching the first episode with the wife and were both just blown away by the attrocious acting, script and bad CG... also the fight scenes... OH MY GOD, could they overuse slow motion any more? I think not, for every 5 seconds of normal speed you got 10 of slow motion.

This looks NO better.
