Maatc Getting Famous as a Professional Escalopter (escalopteur?) (Blog Entry by dag)
Hey, thanks for the post, doing the interview was great fun!
They have another one about the lip dub we did, but they will air it some other time I think.
I am not used to dealing with the press so I was quite surprised how my words were twisted into a new meaning or just left out and then interpreted entirely different by the interviewer.
For example I told them the word was invented in a forum where I posted the clip not BY me and the bit about my friend uploading it to YouTube was made up by them as well.
I better get David Plouffe to coach me next time...
Anyway here is the translation of the interview:
Textbox:
The whole thing is like helicoptering on an escalator. Some people had the idea to lay down on the black handrails of escalators to get spun around in circles by the opposite movement. Great fun when shopping. The word was invented by a guy from Berlin. (wrong!)
Audio:
Interviewer:
Today I speak about a few twisted videos on the web, and I mean that literally. It´s about people who lay down for a round on an escalator and get spun around by the black handrails. And that is called (maatcs voice) "Escalopter. It´s a mix between an escalator and a helicopter."
Interviewer:
That`s what Matthias Kluth from Berlin says, and he has to know it, since he coined the term (wrong again!) He just layed down on some handrails moving in opposite directions, braced himself and let himself get spun around. The video was uploaded by a friend. The Urbandictionary calls his sport "Escalopter" and added it to it´s list of words. Should you want to try an Escalopter, you just need two escalators close to each other that run in opposite directions, one up, one down and a little bit of practice before you start.
Maatc:
In the beginning it´s a funny feeling to jump up on the rails and to let yourself fall back but it worked after two attempts. But you will get a bruised back, I had a few of them afterwards.
Interviewer:
Lay down on your back, and don´t try it belly down if you listen to the pro.
Maatc:
I tried it face down, but it didn´t work. Because the tension in your back muscles is not as strong when you lay on your belly. It might work if you have a really strong back, but I could not do it.
Interviewer:
Escalopter is conquering the internet. As opposed to other fun sports it is unlikely that any money can be made from it though.
Maatc:
No, I got some of my friends to try it as well, but other than that it was of no real use, I did not make any money from it yet, and I think it won´t be an olympic sport any time soon either.
Interviewer:
Escalopter, a new fun sport that owes it´s name to Matthias Kluth from Berlin. You can check out what helicoptering on an escalator looks like on jumptv.
