No joking around about the turkey

My_design says...

I brined a 14 pound turkey and roasted it in a convection oven after putting rosemary, sage and thyme butter under the skin. Took it to my mother-in-laws. She usually cooks, now I'm a little worried I showed her up... But my wife said it was the best she'd ever had and I was happy with it.

DOLKEN SPISER SURSTRØMNING!!!!

TRRazor says...

It's called Surströmming and it's essentially fresh hering put in strong brine, which causes the fish to ferment over the duration of 5-6 months.

During this process it produces acids, sulfits and carbon dioxide which all contribute to an obviously disgusting smell.

Usually it is only eaten outside and the can is opened far away from the dining table.

Polishing a Rusty Knife

Spacedog79 says...

Call me a cynic but I'm calling fake on this one. The blade of the knife is rusty but the handle looks like it's never been used. I reckon he bought the knife and left it in some brine to rust so he could make up some story for this video to "restore" it.

How To Eat Sushi

TheFreak says...

I agree. You can have your Burger King your way and if any man in God's Great 'Murica tries to tell you how to eat it then they can go straight to Commie/Socialist Europe, where there's no Constitution that guarantees Freedom!

On the other hand, some things I cook take multiple days to prepare. Sometimes I may not have slept more than a couple hours overnight, tending to the food I just served you. The rubs, marinades, bastes, brines and such may represent years of experimentation. It often requires multiple different cooking methods to prepare one single item.

When I share that food with you, you can smother it in ketchup and salt before you taste it...that's your right. You can also take that food and eat it in the fucking street. I will, in fact, help you to the street. No...really...I insist.

There's assembly line food and there's unique, carefully prepared, food that sometimes represents a lifetime of care and effort. You can show some appreciation for the work that went into the food you're eating or you can be a self centered dick. That's what Freedom is all about.

Not directed at you personally DannyM...just the concept in general.

Yeah... i feel a different sifter put it best the other week when he said the best way to eat any kind of food is exactly however the hell you want. Deposit the food into the stomach in your favourite manner and then let nature take over.

"Infinity" tech demo - procedurally generated space MMO

Asmo says...

Yeah, the speed of descent looked way too fast (didn't see any visuals for time compression), but I'm sure that unless he's going to do a Star Trek-ish "tech" explanation for the ships characteristics, they'll get a polish at some point to be slightly more realistic.

The planet/atmosphere etc look and feel though were f#cking fantastic. I've wanted a game where you could fly out of space and get out on the ground seamlessly for years, and this looks like it's brining it a whole lot closer. =D

MaxWilder said:

Beautiful! It still seems a little bit "off" from reality, but that may be a consequence of ignoring atmospheric physics and/or a different atmosphere density from Earth's. It would be interesting to know what the simulated speed of that spaceship was, and how it relates to the Space Shuttle's speed.

Aussie Prime Minister rips Opposition Leader on sexism

Asmo says...

I find her repugnant and not because she's a woman...

A bit more info on the case:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/09/speaker-australia-parliament-resign-text-message

Gillard has consistently used personal attacks (some of the certainly accurate) against Abbott to deflect attention away from her governments ongoing snafu's.

The slipper case is just the latest gigantic fuck up in a long line with Gillard's name all over it. This wonderfully outraged woman has steadfastly refused to fire the speaker knowing it would deprive her of another vote in an already slim minority government. The same guy that would say things like:

"Look at a bottle of mussel meat! Salty Cunts in brine!" he continued in his text message to former staffer James Ashby. "Been to thw (sic) fish shop yet to buy the bottle of shell less mussells (sic)?"

I'll be the first to admit that Abbott is neither a likeable person or good prime minister material, but with no viable third alternative, I'll take him and his misogyny over Roxon's 1984-esque data retention scheme and continual attempts to increase the states right at the expense of the citizens, Conroy's 'see no evil' compulsory internet filtering and the extension of the confounding NT 'intervention' scheme that continues to pump money in to a bottomless pit but doesn't actually result in better lives for the Australian Aboriginals it's supposed to help...

Gillard's character is plainly on display. She ignores the blatant sexism of the man she, and her AG Nicola Roxon, defended and refuse to hang out to dry, but when he is revealed to be exactly what she despises, she invokes her dead father and plays the "they're picking on me cos I'm a woman" card to try and divert attention from the trainwreck that is her government. She's not even a toenail clipping from Maggie Thatcher who took to the game of politics as if men had never owned it, never hiding behind the fact she was a woman.

Just put the F*cking Turkey in the Oven

mizila says...

I like what Sylvester said about not putting in the stuffing, and using a meat thermometer. Personally, I put the thermometer right in the breast meat, and pull it out somewhere between 161-165 F (72-74 C). And then let it rest. Just like a good steak, don't you dare cut into that juicy sucker until it has sat for at least 15-20 minutes or else all your moisture will just pour out all over your cutting board instead of being absorbed back into the meat.

BUT, the real secret, is to brine your turkey. Check out this recipe by food scientist Alton Brown: Good Eats Roast Turkey Recipe. There's a reason it has 3,750+ reviews and a 5-star rating. Only instead of a 5-Gallon bucket, I just use a brining bag and put it in the bottom drawer of the fridge. Do make sure it's fully submerged. A brine promotes osmosis, which lets your flavorful bath soak through the meat. It's SCIENCE!

The only reason I don't eat turkey more often is because it's just me and my lady here and a weeks worth of food comas would be counter-productive.

Dan Savage - Are There Good Christians?

FlowersInHisHair says...

I'm not hijacking a quote; rather, I think it's fairer to say that Jesus is contradicting himself here, which should come as no surprise to anyone else who's read the Bible. The Old Testament Law is binding forever: Genesis 17:19, Leviticus 23:14, Luke 16:17. But it also isn't: Luke 16:16, Romans 10:4, Galatians 3:13.

There is some good stuff in in the Sermon on the Mount about loving thine enemy and not judging others, but it's a bit rich coming from someone who plans to cast all his enemies into a lake of fire forever.

>> ^GeeSussFreeK:

You left out all the important parts that follow what "fulfilthe law" mean. Like "“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. "
Or "“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
Or ““Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
The semen on the mount is one of the more progressive parts of Jesus' ministry. It is slightly irresponsibly to hone in on the one sentence that seems to support a position of regression when it was meant as a progression move with the rest of the sermon. Let us make up an example. Let us say MLK Jr. said something like this "I don't want to change what white people do, I came for a higher purpose, to change what they feel". That would be akin to what the verse I believe you have hijacked says
I am no longer a practicing Christian, btw, but I thought this was worth brining up, as I still have a great respect for people of faith, as Mr. Savage also seems to...for which I am glad.

Thing is, though, that conservative anti-gay Christianity (like that spouted Tony Perkins, Mark Driscoll, et al) is usually more supported by scripture than moderate Christianity. This confuses the issue no end.

If you're looking at Old Testament, then perhaps yes. But not according to the New Testament, where Jesus' message is meant to "trump" the law. See the Sermon on the Mount as to what is expected of those who wish to follow him (i.e. how Christians should act toward one another).

You mean this Sermon on the Mount, described in Matthew 5?

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven [...]

Zero Punctuation: iPhone Games

westy says...

I think one of his arguments is that Iphone Games Are less derivative of eachother and not simple cash ins ( to the extent of AAA games), (although that's not his central points and i'm just elaborating on this one thing for the sake of brining it to light)

This is simply not true , granted you don't see 10x of the same game typ on the app store front end , but that's because they are often copping from flash games which act as a filter , app store is just a part of the "micro casual game" market place which would incude , flash , andriod ,xbl indi, and other such services. ( the popularity aspect of how the app store lists games is also a filter but just because you cannot see them on the front end dose not mean that the vast majorty of content avalable is not dervtive and a cash in , in the same way console games are.

angry birds for example is esentualy another developer cashing in on a game like crush the castle .

I don't mind people cashing in on game ideas or concepts , but what I do dislike is that the guys that made crush the castle would now find it very hard to make decent money from that game on iphone. ( I believe both authors should receive fair compencastion , crush castle devs for original concept , and angry bird devs for building on it.

Its allot harder to make Serous money from a flash game hit than it is to make decent money from a I phone hit , angry birds has probably made the devs over £1Mil where as crush the castle on flash maby 20-50k
