So when did they start selling air to us?

Years ago, I saw an episode of "Late Night with David Letterman" while it was still on NBC, and he had a food engineer on showing how they make marshmallows. I remember distinctly, as he was showing Dave how they extrude the corn syrup-mallow mixture into a tray of cornstarch, the engineer saying that marshmallows were excellent business as the finished product can be anywhere between 50% - 70% air. So you're really selling air back to the customer. Wow, I thought, that's messed up. But hey, they're marshmallows, what are you going to do?

It wasn't until last year that I saw Doritos had reintroduced Taco-flavored Doritos on the store shelves and I snatched one up the second I saw it. I guess they're still available in some parts of the US, but the majority of markets only carry the standard Nacho, Cool Ranch, etc. Sadly, it was still that shitty "Taco Bell recipe" they had switched to in the early 90's and not the scrumptious original sour creamy recipe that the original Taco Doritos had. If you were a stoner in the late 80's and had access to them, there was no finer munchy material to be had. (And on a separate note, Hi-C Ecto Cooler is still the ultimate cottonmouth killer, bar none.)

But more importantly, as I started in on this new found bag of Doritos, something else was amiss. The texture was all wrong. It was no longer a corn chip, but a puffy, flaky abomination that had no heft....no density. And it wasn't just Taco flavored. All Doritos...nay, ALL chips have seem to become more flaky, crispy and crappy. I started to see it in other foods too. Cereals...from Fruit Loops to Cheerios, even to Cap'n Crunch (which was puffy to begin with), have all become less and less about texture, and more and more about profit. Less material to make the "same" product, all the way down to less cost to ship based on weight (I assume). Even bread. Now I know you can still get a nice dense potato bread; I'm talking about your average, run of the mill bread. White or wheat.

Anyway, not sure that anything can be done about it, but I sure do miss the old stuff.
Progress marches on, right?

(Oh and just in case some poor Nestle executive stumbles upon this post, what happened to my Carnation Instant Breakfast bars damnit?!)

"If only I could upvote twice..."

How many times have you said or seen this posted here on VS? I was just watching deputydog's posting of Stewart Francis, and it occurred to me to write up a SiftTalk post proposing just that. Or would that defeat the whole idea of the Sift? If you made it valuable, like costing 2 power points or more, do you think the results would skew that badly? Just an idea and worth a little debate for the heck of it. What say you?

Finally upgraded

So I've finally gotten off my butt and ordered all the parts to build a new PC. I was running:

(built 2004)
3.2 Ghz P4 (single core with hyperthreading)
400mhz bus speed
250 GB IDE Maxtor
NVidia 7800 AGP
2 GB pc2700 ram

New system:

Core i7 920
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R
4 GB PC10666 DDR3 (I'm staying with XP, will upgrade ram after new Windows comes out)
EVGA GTX 260 894mb
640 GB SATA HD
Blu-ray burner

So the reason for the post, other than shameless self-promotion, is I need to build it and test the hell out of it. Can anyone recommend any "burn-in" programs, etc? Remember, I'm sticking with XP 32-bit for now.

All told, with parts, etc, I spent just over 12. All to make my porn look better.

Instrumental hip-hop tracks - Can you help me identify them?

I took a beginning jazz dance class a few months back for my AA degree, and while in the class, I got a few of the instrumental tracks we used to warm-up/dance with. Most of them I was able to identify, as they were instrumentals of real songs. But a few, I have absolutely no idea who the original artist was. These might not even be instrumentals of popular songs, but rather original compositions. Dunno, I've got nada, nix, zero, zilch. My instructor didn't have a clue. Can you give a quick listen to these and identify them? I would be truly grateful!

**NOTE: I've replaced the original clips with the first 30-60 seconds of each song.

House of the Dead: Overkill - Wii

So I picked up House of the Dead: Overkill and being the zombie fanatic that I am (vampires are my second favorite), I surprised myself by only stumbling on news of this game about week before its release. Definitely worth it, imho. The zombies are plenty numerous (with the ability to turn on extra ones to make it harder), the ability to buy and upgrade weapons before a mission (I am SOOO getting that auto-shotgun), and the general overall theme of grindhouse they gave to the game make this one a winner in my book.

My only complaints come from the lag that occasionally pops up and all the swearing. Now don't get my wrong, I swear up and down just as much as the next sailor, but it gets a little fucking ridiculous after a motherfucking while. Shit. You fucking understand what the fuck I'm fucking saying, cocksucker? I mean shitballfuckassbitchcumdickstain! You know, it's like using spices in cooking. You season your speech; you don't dump the whole can in.

Anyways, great game! Give it a rental first if you'd like, but if you love games and zombies, I wouldn't hesitate.

See you after the apocalypse....

So what's your rig?

As a true geek at heart, I do still love the mechanics of a computer, even though I work around them 8-hours a day and am sick of them by now...

So what's everyone running under their hood? My box is really old and in badly need of an upgrade; circa 2004. I won't go into specifics but it's bad. But I do love my 47" LCD. Typing and gaming from the couch is the way to go, people.

Also, I'm posting this here because, ironically, there's no 'computer' channel on the Sift. Maybe the seed for something new?

Decriminalizing marijuana - what say you?

Link to news story: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/30/frank.marijuana/index.html

"The U.S. should stop arresting responsible marijuana users, Rep. Barney Frank said Wednesday, announcing a proposal to end federal penalties for Americans carrying fewer than 100 grams, almost a quarter-pound, of the substance.

Current laws targeting marijuana users place undue burdens on law enforcement resources, punish ill Americans whose doctors have prescribed the substance and unfairly affect African-Americans, said Frank, flanked by legislators and representatives from advocacy groups.

"The vast amount of human activity ought to be none of the government's business," Frank said on Capitol Hill. "I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time.""

What say you, fellow sifters? Are you for or against decriminalization? Why?

So now I'm worried...

So, I made a new avatar, most certainly a joke at my own expense (ie. my nick), and am now wondering how many people are going to take offense at it, without seeing it with the sense of humor for which it was intended. As I am part of the democracy here at VS, I'll let the gallery speak on my behalf.

What say you?

*edit: I actually had drawn in frowning eyebrows but that seemed too over the top.

HTML tags

I've looked all over and cannot seem to find the proper way to include HTML tags in posts. I see the list available to me in the new post window yet...

The Mist

So having waited about 12 years after I first heard that Darabont and King were planning on bringing The Mist to the big screen, to call me psyched to the see the movie would have been an understatement. One of my favorite short stories by King directed by the guy who did Shawshank Redemption? I'm sooo there.

And now after seeing the movie, I can say that it is easily one of the best book-to-screen adaptations I've ever seen. Having re-read the short story just the day before, all the dialog and scenes were fresh in my mind going in, and Darabont nailed it. He creates a good old-fashioned monster movie; one that is in all actuality very akin to the zombie genre, another favorite of mine. A small group of people are isolated by an exterior threat and must rely on themselves for support. It relies just as much on psychological horror and man's inhumanity toward man as it does that which goes bump in the night. Very well done.

All except the ending. I can tell you, O friends of the Sift, that I was PISSED when I walked out of that theatre. Why would you spend all the time and effort staying that true to the source material and then screw it up at the end? Yes, the books ending is ambiguous...so what? And you know what? I totally agree that were I in that situation, that would have probably been the more acceptable solution than dying a protracted death of dehydration and/or being made a meal of. But having that ending felt like a cop-out. Something that gave the mindless masses of the movie-going public their happy ending and appease the others who think that suicide is cowardly. I could have even forgiven the director had the four of them been shot, the Army rolls up, the father is shown breaking down...BUT THE MIST IS STILL THERE. Leave it through to the end of the story; don't give me some "oh look, it finally burned off! We're gonna be OK!" ending. Hollywood, it's OK to have a fucked up ending. That what made Se7en so great. Or Fargo, The River's Edge, etc, etc. Keep the sunshine and rainbows for Mr. Magoriam's Wonder Emporium. This movie (and it's fans) didn't deserve this bastardized ending.

************

So with all that said, the movie gets a solid 7/10, rather than the 9/10 I was going to give it. I still would highly recommend it to anyone who loves their horror stories with some psychology added in.

Now, bring on the fan-edit!

Top 15 faq?

Tried my best to find some sort of FAQ regarding the top 15, but no luck. Hence, I'm posting to SiftTalk.

Recently I posted a Whose Line clip (found here: http://www.videosift.com/video/Whose-Line-Party-Quirks)
and watched it rise as high as #6 on the list. However, 3 hours later, it's gone off the top 15. It had more votes tallied then the preceding 6-7 videos, so I don't think it was bumped due to votes.

Is there a time limit? How does the Top 15 work? Was it due to the fact that I modified the details on the submission? Not crying about it; just curious why it was climbing and then *poof*.
Thanks!
