Sinead O’Connor's Open Letter to Miley Cyrus

Dear Miley,

I wasn’t going to write this letter, but today i’ve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your Wrecking Ball video was designed to be similar to the one for Nothing Compares… So this is what I need to say… And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.
I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.
Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent.
I am happy to hear I am somewhat of a role model for you and I hope that because of that you will pay close attention to what I am telling you.
The music business doesn’t give a shit about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted.. and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, ‘they’ will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone.
None of the men oggling you give a shit about you either, do not be fooled. Many’s the woman mistook lust for love. If they want you sexually that doesn’t mean they give a fuck about you. All the more true when you unwittingly give the impression you don’t give much of a fuck about yourself. And when you employ people who give the impression they don’t give much of a fuck about you either. No one who cares about you could support your being pimped.. and that includes you yourself.
Yes, I’m suggesting you don’t care for yourself. That has to change. You ought be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you. This is a dangerous world. We don’t encourage our daughters to walk around naked in it because it makes them prey for animals and less than animals, a distressing majority of whom work in the music industry and it’s associated media.
You are worth more than your body or your sexual appeal. The world of showbiz doesn’t see things that way, they like things to be seen the other way, whether they are magazines who want you on their cover, or whatever.. Don’t be under any illusions.. ALL of them want you because they’re making money off your youth and your beauty.. which they could not do except for the fact your youth makes you blind to the evils of show business. If you have an innocent heart you can’t recognise those who do not.
I repeat, you have enough talent that you don’t need to let the music business make a prostitute of you. You shouldn’t let them make a fool of you either. Don’t think for a moment that any of them give a flying fuck about you. They’re there for the money.. we’re there for the music. It has always been that way and it will always be that way. The sooner a young lady gets to know that, the sooner she can be REALLY in control.
You also said in Rolling Stone that your look is based on mine. The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company were encouraging me to do what you have done. I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not my looks. I am happy that I made that choice, not least because I do not find myself on the proverbial rag heap now that I am almost 47 yrs of age.. which unfortunately many female artists who have based their image around their sexuality, end up on when they reach middle age.
Real empowerment of yourself as a woman would be to in future refuse to exploit your body or your sexuality in order for men to make money from you. I needn’t even ask the question.. I’ve been in the business long enough to know that men are making more money than you are from you getting naked. Its really not at all cool. And its sending dangerous signals to other young women. Please in future say no when you are asked to prostitute yourself. Your body is for you and your boyfriend. It isn’t for every spunk-spewing dirtbag on the net, or every greedy record company executive to buy his mistresses diamonds with.
As for the shedding of the Hannah Montana image.. whoever is telling you getting naked is the way to do that does absolutely NOT respect your talent, or you as a young lady. Your records are good enough for you not to need any shedding of Hannah Montana. She’s waaaaaaay gone by now.. Not because you got naked but because you make great records.
Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted.. its so not cool Miley.. its dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. we aren’t merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers.. that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career. Kindly fire any motherfucker who hasn’t expressed alarm, because they don’t care about you.

I'm not enjoying the trolling on the Sift.

You know, I hid my gender for a long time here, because I didn't want to put up with a bunch of asshole men attacking a woman's point of view. I was afraid that if I spoke up from my point of view, I would get trashed.

It has been so nice to just be myself here, without fear.

And then. @spoco2 spoke up on C-Punch video, as did a number of others.

Since then, it has been a downward spiraling troll fest that, for me, is getting uglier and uglier.

I like the guys that are doing the trolling. I also wish they would stop.

I realize that saying something is likely to set off another round of bashing on folks who come here as a respite from the Norm of the Internet.

I don't think censorship is okay. Please don't get me wrong.

But why this need to punish, guys? It is ugly. I'm not enjoying it.

Is this how people get run off from the Sift?

I have read posts, after the fact, discussing how so-and-so got their "feelings hurt" and left the Sift. Is this how it happens?

My feelings aren't hurt. I just don't want to see promoted on the front page what feels like an unending assault against the sensibilities of women and those who truly care about women.

I know I risk setting the trolls off again. (I hate calling the folks I like trolls.) I want to speak up, though. I don't want to stay silent.

Here's a question -- if these sexist videos (and yes, they are sexist videos) were RACIST videos, would the community allow them to continue? Why is that blatant -- or even sly -- sexism is still okay but racism is not?

Here's another question -- why would people I like continue doing things that they know upset me and others like me? I understand that behavior in the faceless morass that is YouTube or the internet in general, but here? Where we like each other -- mostly?

This is what spoco2 was talking about, I think. The bully boy frat boy tactics that are designed to shame people into silence.

Well, I'm not going away. And I'm not silent.

On Porn and Other Matters

When VideoSift started back in 2006- we wrote some basic guidelines- tenants- to guide and direct the kind of community that we hoped VideoSift would grow to be. Things like "no self-posting" - to promote altruism and socialization -- no full TV episodes- we didn't want the Sift to turn into a dump for pirated embeds. And ... no porn.

Even before the advent of sites like YouPorn and PornHub - we could tell Flash video porn would be huge. I made a conscious decision, from the very beginning of VideoSift, not to entangle VideoSift in porn. I had a few reasons for this:

1. video porn would be ubiquitous and everywhere- VideoSift could be a break from that. A place for adults, that wasn't "adult" if you catch my drift.

2. Not all of it, but some porn exploits desperate people who are at the end of their rope. I didn't want to have to sort the "good" porn from the "bad" porn - good luck going down that road.

3. I've got my own demons, people. Let's just say I have some personal issues with porn that are between me and a therapist. Since VideoSift was going to be my "home" I had a personal preference to not have it here.
The advertising thing came about six months later, when I realized that the first question any of the ad networks ask is "do you have adult content". I'm now glad that we can say no- or we would probably not be here.

We are not rolling in dough. As great as the charter subscriptions are- they only pay a small portion of our costs. We need the ad networks to stay alive. You can call it a sellout- but it's one I'm willing to make because I didn't want adult material here anyway.

Another issue is the definition of porn. It's definitely not a black-and-white thing, and the word itself is loaded. It's not just whatever gets someone sexually excited because we're all bent a little different - especially me. (no I'm not telling what my fetish is)

But we do need a better definition- help me out in the comments with a good definition and we'll add it to the guidelines.

How about something new?

People mostly sift politics and news videos that reaffirm positions they already have. It's fine to express your opinion, even via someone else's words, but it feels like 90+% of the top videos since the 2008 election campaign started have fallen into this category.

I get it, really. Bush was wrong and Obama is right. The Republicans are idiots and the Democrats are saviors. Fox News couldn't find their way out of a paper bag (because paper bags are all recycled now and recycling is part of the Muslim, Marxist, Liberal Hippie agenda).

You've all made your point, now can't we get some videos that teach/show us something new? Maybe ease off the frivolous news for a while? I could go back to watching TV at this rate.

Some cool web apps I NEED to mention
This is real-time text editing with 2 or more people. It has a chat box on the right so you can discuss what you're doing. It is absolutely superb and the timeline feature lets you play back the creation of the text as it happened. Of course it also stores all your versions.

The reason I'm raving is that I had to help my sister complete a job application while I was at the office. We dumped the job spec into a pad and started editing. In a few hours we achieved what I'm absolutely certain would have taken at least double that (extra time for viewing changes and approving them via email or wiki-style product).
I use various apps for work but this is the one that promises to spice up productivity. I love the way this is focused on tasks, getting them in quickly and allows you to type invocations that remind me of life on Videosift. Your tasks naturally fall into a timeline and you can filter and edit quickly. You can start timetracking on any item, discuss and group tasks into very easily accessed projects.

It has a colourful look and feels nimble and refreshing. I'm using a mixture of Basecamp and Highrise for my needs but Basecamp seems like overkill as it doesn't see much use. This would be worth the 4 euros a month but there is a free account. I'd love to see them extend the concept to includes notes and files but these things evolve over time.

For the old-timers: Should Choggie be allowed back in the sift?

  (39 votes)
  (22 votes)
  (3 votes)

A total of 64 votes have been cast on this poll.

I write this in response to the banning of, allegedly, Choggie's new account Phonecium. (I assume that it is him, as people seem pretty sure.)

I think it's a farce that we keep banning him like this, no matter how well he behaves. Swampgirl has famously argued for his case before, but as far as I know it never got to a vote. She wanted a full pardon - reinstation of the Choggie account, but personally I feel that a ban is a ban, so the user is forfeited (and I make the poll, so there..).

I put this question as simply as I can, with simple vote options:
*Yes, on a new account - He will be allowed to make his next account (or the phonecium reinstated) and be left in peace as long as he abides by our rules.
*No, never. - We will continue to ban any new account he makes, effectively banning the person behind the mask.
*Undecided - For those of you who do not know Choggie or don't have an opinion on the matter.

I encourage people who has strong opinions about this to sound out in the comments and I hope people will vote what they think is right.

Amazing collection of color photographs from Nazi Germany

I just discovered this collection of about 100 photographs from WW2:
There are a few from after the war as well, but mostly it documents the events between 1934 and 1945. History seems so much more alive and closer when it comes in color.

It's a very diverse collection, with photos of all kinds: Of war and peace, happiness and sadness, love and hate, pride and shame, horrors and festivals. But most of all it's a collection of people of all kinds. A majority of the nazis were not so unlike you and me. This is important to remember if we don't want to repeat history.
