I also can't see how many people are "chatting" from the main page.

Feature Request: Greatly Souped-Up Ignore Feature

Currently I have 0 people on my ignore list. The people I would ignore simply have their comments replaced by an expander that will reveal them to me, and I can still see all of their videos. I want the ignore feature to actually help us ignore people. If I put John Doe on my ignore list, I don't want to see his videos, I don't want to see his posts, I don't want to see his Sift Talk or blog posts, etc. Really make it so that the person might as well not exist (save for showing up in Sifty's weekly blog posts, or in the top 15, etc.). As the system stands now, it actually emphasizes their posts more than anything because it makes them stand out.

Siftquisition #2: CaptainPlanet420

As soon as he's back, he continues his hateful speech, and then blatantly abuses his privileges by invoking *discuss on the Shimabukuro sift 3 times in a 24-hour period:

He clearly is never going to stop purposefully hurting the sift, and I think a permaban is in order.

Google queries on a state-by-state basis

^This site allows you to enter any Google query and see how popular it is by state, along with providing correlations. For example, when I searched "sex toys", I was somewhat surprised to see a +0.57 correlation with "VotedForBush" and a -0.66 correlation with "VotedForObama". List any other query results you'd like to share here.

*election08 --> *elections

I propose that we make a simple change to fix the awkwardness associated with the sudden sharp downturn in *election08 invocations and inevitable collapse to zero: change the channel to *elections and it is set forever.

Richard Dawkins' 7 Categories

1. Strong theist. 100% probability of the existence of God. In the words of C.G. Jung, "I do not believe, I know."

2. Very high probability but short of 100%. De facto theist. "I cannot know for certain, but I strongly believe in God and live my life on the assumption that he is there."

3. Higher than 50% but not very high. Technically agnostic but leaning towards theism. "I am very uncertain, but I am inclined to believe in God."

4. Exactly 50%. Completely impartial agnostic. "God's existence and non-existence are exactly equi-probable."

5. Lower than 50% but not very low. Technically agnostic but leaning towards atheism. "I don't know whether God exists but I'm inclined to be skeptical."

6. Very low probability, but short of zero. De facto atheist. "I cannot know for certain but I think God is very improbable, and I live my life on the assumption that he is not there."

7. Strong atheist. "I know there is no God, with the same conviction as Jung "knows" there is one."

Of course there are not 7 hard categories but a continuum. For simplicity's sake, which one most closely describes your views?

Left 4 Dead

I'm in the VideoSift group in Steam (same name). Look me up and add me if you have an account, and leave me a message if you have Left 4 Dead so we can have some fun!

So . . . what makes a hard drive light on fire?

My mom's computer's power supply died, so I replaced it. Fired up the new PSU, and the hard drive lit on fire. It's the exact same wattage, and I made all the same connections. So . . . could the power surge that killed the first PSU have destroyed some voltage regulator or something? Is anything else in the computer salvageable (e.g., RAM, optical drives, the new power supply)?

Personal Top Channels

Does it seem stagnant for anyone else? My total "sports" votes received is less than my top two sports vids votes received combined, and I've made a concerted effort to chip into my "comedy" channel overwhelming lead, but all the numbers seem like they're from a few months ago.

For anyone out there who wants to remotely access computers (either to access your home computer via your laptop or to help friends and family members with their computer problems), LogMeIn ( is far and away the best program to use.

The free version allows you add an unlimited number of systems that you can remotely access, with several tools, including a laser pointer, whiteboard (this one is especially fun for freaking out my sister by taking over her computer and writing "redrum" across the screen), magnifier, and several other features. This isn't a free trial -- it's just plain free.

I am able to access every system in my parent's house (one wired, one wireless, and one desktop with some sort of weird wireless adapter) without a hitch, and the best part is that you don't even need to install any software on the controller machine -- just go to the website, log in, go to "my computers", pick which computer you want to control, and bam: you're in.

I'm only posting this because I have been searching for over a year for a program like this and I wanted to save you all the trouble.

oxytube: meta search engine for video host sites (alpha)

This is a really nifty little site that someone on another site I frequent has put up and I think it deserves a mention here. It lets you view or download the videos right from the aggregation page, but right now it only includes 4 hosts.

Here's the site:

Here's the proof that I'm not tooting my own horn :

Downvoting Based Solely on Tags

I'm sure there are a handful of people who do this, but this has to be the most egregious example. I had grown quite irksome of mkone's downvote rampage of every single American football video based on the idea that "zomgz this is not football -- it's American football!" regardless of the content of the video (which he likely didn't watch). I posted to his profile to raise the issue, and he promptly deleted the post (along with other posts asking the same questions and his account suspension notification from about a month ago), sans reply. Here are the VideoSift guidelines for downvoting (emphasis added):

Down voting is available, but only for members with a Bronze Star or higher. (See above.) Down voting is useful for when you find something you really don't like or just feel does not belong on VideoSift. If a video dips too far into negative numbers in its vote tally, SiftBot will automatically discard it. Please do not down vote a video because you dislike the Sifter who submitted it; this is entirely unacceptable. Instead, vote solely based on the quality of video content. If down voting or any other member privilege is intentionally misused, the offending member will be temporarily banned for no less than 2 weeks. A second offense will result in a permanent ban.

Clearly, he is not downvoting based on the quality of video content, but on the tags the submitter added. Based on the VideoSift guidelines, this is unacceptable and represents mkone's second breach within a month.

Here are the videos: (he also declared this particular video dead as he downvoted it, clearly showing that he could not have voted based on the video content)
