My question to atheists: Why fruit?

To clarify: Why would a plant/bush/tree evolve to produce a large fruit or something similar where there are easier, more effective ways of reproduction?

I know that berries have seeds and when eaten by animals and shit out elsewhere, will grow new plants, but why would a plant take so much from itself to produce fruit instead of say, pollen or something like the oak seeds?

This isn't supposed to be a banana argument to try and prove the existence of God or anything, but I'm just curious to see what people have to say.

Decriminalizing marijuana - what say you?

Link to news story:

"The U.S. should stop arresting responsible marijuana users, Rep. Barney Frank said Wednesday, announcing a proposal to end federal penalties for Americans carrying fewer than 100 grams, almost a quarter-pound, of the substance.

Current laws targeting marijuana users place undue burdens on law enforcement resources, punish ill Americans whose doctors have prescribed the substance and unfairly affect African-Americans, said Frank, flanked by legislators and representatives from advocacy groups.

"The vast amount of human activity ought to be none of the government's business," Frank said on Capitol Hill. "I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time.""

What say you, fellow sifters? Are you for or against decriminalization? Why?

What are your favorite album covers?

I love CDs, and no analog "purist" has ever been able to convince that analog music sounds better than digital. Having said that, I REALLY miss the big, beautiful artwork of the old 12" vinyl records. Some if them were almost worthy of framing, especially if they were gate-fold sleeves. I'm going to post just a few of my favorites, and I'd like you to post links to some of your favorites too. Even if the artwork is only on a CD cover, if you like it then link it.,, and most other online music retailers provide large images of CD covers, so look for them there if you if you don't know where to start. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be the artwork on the cover, but anywhere in the enclosed materials that came with your record or CD.

This first one is iconic - Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." So many ways to interpret it, and when you listen to the album you discover even more. Brilliant.

Another iconic image - "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. What can I say about this picture that hasn't already been said? Her name is Dolores Erickson, by the way.

Green Day - "American Idiot" A powerful statement about American militarism in the 21st century. I'm sure the use of black and red is no accident.

Now let's see some of yours.

Republican Hypocrisy Lives! Larry Craig still kicking

Good gawd, are they on Jay Leno's payroll?

Two United States Senators implicated in extramarital sexual activity have named themselves as co-sponsors of S. J. RES. 43, dubbed the Marriage Protection Amendment. If ratified, the bill would amend the United States Constitution to state that marriage "shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."

Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID), who was arrested June 11, 2007 on charges of lewd conduct in a Minneapolis airport terminal, is co-sponsoring the amendment along with Sen. David Vitter (R-LA).

Craig, who entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct, was detained and charged for attempting to engage in sexual activity with a male undercover police officer. His arrest and plea became public two months later. At that time, Craig attempted to withdraw his plea and enter a new plea of not guilty. To date, his efforts have been denied by the courts.

In July of 2007, Vitter was identified as a client of a prostitution firm owned by the late Deborah Jeane Palfrey, commonly known as The DC Madam.

With a Democratic controlled Congress it is unlikely the bill will be brought up for a vote in either the Senate or House of Representatives.

A voice mail left for Craig spokesperson Susan Irby went unreturned. Attempts to contact Vitter's press secretary Joel DiGrado were unsuccessful.

Have Discard, Well Traveled

Similar to the entreat from doogle to flex that down vote power, a reminder that some have the power to discard posts-

FAQ neither discourages or encourages users with the ability, not to avail themselves of the power to discard posts they know have not a chance making it to the front page-I do it all the time with crap from probies, that get 1 or 2 down votes, and is left to assault sensibilities in the queue till its auto-discarded-

This post to advocate that this be done more often-the folks who post them perhaps might see that at least 2 other users thought it inappropriate, and take the initiative to dump it themselves.....I love to discard crap. Give it a try, you might enjoy it as well.......

Infantile, base, crude or sick, it doesn 't take much for me, others may indulge or suffer it, I care not to.....

The Great VideoSift Coming -Out Thread

No, not like that, Blankfist.

But like this: We've seen the "what's your screen name mean" thread and the "what's your avatar" thread.

The idea here is to get to know the people behind those names and avatars. I think it would be cool for members to write a short paragraph about themselves - where they live, what they do(for a living), and what they do for fun.

So come one, come all, and share those stories!

I'm certainly going to try to make it, he is a great influence on how I view technology and history. You can tell I'm a huge fan, Here is an experimental page I recently built through"knowledge web" inspiration Let me know what you think of it. Ten minute segments surrounded with links to information about everything Burke talks about. I'm considering putting the labour in for each episode.

Why the Sift shouldn't bow to Region Blocking

In a recent thread the topic of region blocking came up, I probably should have kept this writing for Ox's thread, but I want to embed a video...reading my shit can be painful, but at least I give you a gem of a video at the end.

When I first started visiting here way back in the day, Pre Viacom v YouTube. This was where early YouTube adapters came to sort out all the junk. We sifted up the Simpsons, The South Park clips, The Daily Show clips, The classic Movie Clips. The work we did to mashup all this media and present it in published clips created a great user experience for users and visitors. The membership was based off those who seeked quality. Lurkers Lurked because they counted on our community to provide the best clips. Simply put, there was less meme more quality.

It's a tough community to crack but I think we can all agree its a greatest place to comment on videos. I am a siftaholic and I fear Brian is going to sift my wallet dry if we don't think of a way to earn the sift more scratch.

Over the course of the years I am sure you as much as I, have witnessed the sift transform into a great community, we attract a niche of members who love nothing more then sharing, and that niche is generally good people. *ahem* even Choggie *ahem*

Many different groups of people get along here, and if you look at the front page, at any hour you can find an incredible mix of videos, but we are falling behind

The problem is, there are more and more places that people can go on the net these days to watch Videos, and post Viacom v YouTube many of those sites are unfortunately region blocked. I don't think this trend will hold up on the Internet, I hear even made a statement that they intend on going global.,, ComedyCentral, South Park Studios are deep archives that can be thoroughly be sifted for the Gems. We owe it to our audience to be sure to provide them with the greatest clips of the net, as we are left to scrape the bottom of YouTube, more quality content is being found elsewhere.

If you can't view the video below, Brian has offered One solution, ask me and I can help you find other ways, this is the Internet, we are media revolutionaries, we will not be censored.

As previously discussed, I say a *Regionblock invoc gets installed, and perhaps a Profile Setting that allows users to hide *regionblocked videos.

Letting us Sifters loose on these archives could create a real videosift a Siftaissance

Since I'm sharing ideas, I might as well pile on another

Siftography: Fedquip

I had the pleasure of talking with Fedquip a few weeks ago and was pleased to learn a little more about our current number five member, than what I could only discern from posted comments and videos. The conversation took some unusual turns, which I’m sure you will agree, made for pretty entertaining conversation.

In a nutshell, Fedquip lives on Vancouver Island, works from home, rarely goes out and lives off fried rice. For anyone who can relate to this simplistic summary of the man, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the following read:

When I asked if he cooked his own fried rice, he had this to offer:

Fedquip: No, I don't cook at all. A childhood incident scared me from entering lovely girlfriend enjoys cooking and I won't ever stop her.

Persephone: Does your fear of kitchens include cleaning them? What happened when you were a kid?

Since this is Obama central...(racist, bigoted content ahead) (Blog Post)

I could use some help.
Yes, I am a republican, and no, Obama is not my candidate. I'm still rootin' for Paul. But even I can sense bullshit when I read it.

This is an email that was forward to me, and I hate shit like this, so I could use a proper response, yet I just don't know how to write one.

(email start)

"God help us if this man is elected!! But it is all stated in the Bible and it will happen sooner or later. This is from Darlene Millican, wife of the pastor of Trinity Bapt. Church here in Sun City . I have felt for sometime now that Obama is the one person that 'Frightens Me'. I believe the Bible has warned us that 'A man will come from the East that will be charismatic in nature and have proposed solutions for all our problems and his rhetoric will attract many supporters!' When will our pathetic Nation quit turning their back on God and understand that this man is 'A Muslim'....First, Last and always....and we are AT WAR with the Muslim Nation, whether our bleeding-heart, secular, Liberal friends believe it or not. This man fits every description from the Bible of the 'Anti-Christ'! I'm just glad to know that there are others that are frightened by this man!

Who is Barack Obama?
Very interesting and something that should be considered in your choice. If you do not ever forward anything else, please forward this to all your contacts...this is very scary to think of what lies ahead of us here in our own United States...better heed this and pray about it and share it.
<>' confirms this is factual. Check for yourself.

Who is Barack Obama?
Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack
Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu ,
Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM
from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHEIST from Wichita , Kansas.
Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya . His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia . When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocate to Indonesia. Obama attended nbsp;a MUSLIM school in Jakarta . He also spent two
years in a Catholic school. Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim . He is quick to point out that, 'He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school.'

Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that that he is not a radical. Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's education.

Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, introduced his stepson to Islam. Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta.
Wahabism is the RADICAL teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major public office in the United States , Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background. ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran. Barack Hussein Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegiance nor will he show any
reverence for our flag. While others place their hands over their hearts, Obama turns his back to the flag and slouches. Do you want someone like this as your PRESIDENT? Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential candidacy.
The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the President of the United States, one of their own! The Bible says 'He will come from among you!'
> Please forward to everyone you know.
> Would you want this man leading our country?
> NOT ME!!!

(email end)
Ok, that was copied verbatim, and the only editing I did was to get rid of all the ">" characters and to delete erroneous spaces in the middle of words.

So what the fuck? Even I know he's a Christian, and has been attending the same church for 20 years, so it's not like he converted right before announcing his candidacy.

ANd turning his back on the flag during the nation anthem/pledge of allegiance? I've never heard of that. And so fucking what if he doesn't wear the lapel pin. I like that he doesn't - that's the same thing as slapping a yellow ribbon on your SUV and calling it a day.

Could someone who knows a little more about Obama craft a response for me? I hate stupid morons that make other Christians/republicans/Christian republicans look bad like this.

Oh, and gotta love how they feel it necessary to point out his middle name every chance they get, eh? I mean, seriously - Obama was born almost two decades before Saddam got into office! Excuse the fuck out of him for having what is a VERY common name. (Farhad - care to lend any credibility to that claim?)
It would be like calling any German man with the name "Adolph" and evil bastard and a Nazi. But before Hitler did his thing, it was just another German name.
Shit, by that logic, our very own Lucky 760 is a Nazi. His name is Rommel, fer cris'sakes.

I hate stupid people and need a good pwning dose of smackdown.

What made you join VideoSift?

I've been PMing schmawy recently, and I briefly mentioned to him that what finally made me join VS was finding this video. By itself I could write a whole Sift Talk post extolling its virtues, but I won't. Suffice it to say for now that it's an awesome, trippy video with great music.

Because of the aforementioned I've been really curious about what made all of you decide to jump into the mix that is VideoSift. I had been lurking here for months, but the video I just mentioned is what finally pushed me to join. Can any of you define similar moments of epiphany in which you finally said to yourself, "This is where I belong"?

I'd really love to hear them all. I respect the opinions of so many people here, even many of the ones with which I find myself in disagreement. Most of you express yourself so well with your choice of videos that I barely need to ask how you feel about this, that, or the other. However I'll be the first to admit that I'm wrong on so many occasions, and that's yet another reason why I'd love to hear your stories.

This isn't a homework assignment for freshman English, mind you. Even a few sentences with imperfect grammar and multiple spelling errors will work for me. Share your story. It might not only be fun, but it may also help you identify kindred spirits in the community.

What have you got to lose?
