Member @Zawash has proposed creation of a new *Nordic channel as described below. Vote whether you think it should or should not be allowed:

The Nordic countries - Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark), Finland and Iceland, as well as regions controlled by nordic countries (Greenland, the Faroe Islands).

This is for sifts related to *nordic people, culture, language, cuisine or otherwise. Bork, bork bork. Lutefisk.

Since we moved servers it's been apparent that things have felt slow sometimes (or most times), such as voting on a video, posting a comment, or saving a video to a playlist.

After a bit of research and debugging I finally found what I am almost certain was the source of the problem and fixed it. Since then everything is extremely snappy for me like it's really never been before.

Do you concur? Don't just vote no because you like pointing out how slow VideoSift has always been. Really give everything the old once over objectively.

What say you?

Should Sneaky Scumbag Spammer Self-Links Stay?

  (4 votes)
  (20 votes)

A total of 24 votes have been cast on this poll.

I just blacklisted long-time spammer @Sweetmind after finding compelling evidence against him, despite his having been a member for years and for earning himself several stars (via published videos). This is the second recent long-term spammer whose ass I've nailed to the wall, though I'm sure there are more waiting to be discovered.

I won't delve into the reasons I know he's a spammer, but because I know he is, I'm compelled to redact and kill all of his video submissions, despite that several did very well here.

Do you think all of his self-links should be redacted and killed? I really do, but I wonder if more of the community might feel they should stay because even though they're self-links the community actually liked them.

What are your thoughts on this situation?

Is your earwax wet or dry?

I've known for a long time that my wife's earwax is all dry, but I always thought it was really weird and just because maybe she doesn't consume enough water every day.

I saw an episode of Mythbusters years ago where they had dozens or so people pile up their earwax to see if they could create a functioning candle with it, and all their earwax looked like mine, so that's always help me assume my wife is the one oddball and everyone else is like me.

I recently discovered while listening to the DVDASA podcast (starring David Choe and Asa Akira) that what's actually going on is Asians have dry earwax and non-Asians have wet earwax. I've confirmed researchers determined this is really the case via some science sources online. Fascinating, isn't it?

My sons are half Asian, but I haven't found any good earwax samples in their heads yet, so I'm not sure what a 50/50 person's earwax might be like. Maybe dry in one ear and wet in the other? Maybe a 1:1 mixture of dry and wet?

Anyways, what is your earwax like? Please inform what your genetic ethnicity is. Thanks for participating in this highly scientific poll!

[edit]
I especially need you to comment if you're some kind of a mixed-breed ir if you have a type of earwax that isn't supposed to apply to you (e.g., Asian with wet or non-Asian with dry).

*WaitForIt Channel?

No one has actually asked to create the *waitforit channel, but I did see the idea suggested a couple of weeks ago and thought it was a fantastic idea.

What do you think? Should someone create a Wait For It channel?

If it's a popular idea, I hope any of the sifters out there who haven't yet but are eligible to create a channel might actually pull the trigger on it.

Thoughts?

As we all know, the community was in a bit of an uproar over how we changed the promoted videos list on the front page.

After much community collaboration, we agreed to change it to something a bit more prominent. It has just been unveiled and is now a single fully-expanded promoted video on the homepage. You can load other promoted videos, if any, using the link above the video.

Every time the front page loads, the promoted video selection is balanced so all currently-promoted videos have an equal number of views.

Note that I just noticed that once you've loaded a different promoted video using the link I mentioned, the expandable links below the embed stop working. This will be fixed asap. Until then, please ignore it.

What Should the *Win Channel Be Renamed?

As @ant pointed out, there's a conflict with the new(ish) *Win channel and the previously-existing *Wings channel.

Because the former is a sub-string of the latter, when the latter is invoked in a comment, the former is also detected. This is the expected behavior because we allow you to invoke using creative text around invocations.

The funny thing is the system is designed to prevent this by disallowing users to create a channel that is a sub-string of another and by ensuring an admin approves of the channel. In this case, @seltar initially created it with subdomain Wins, and I ignorantly "fixed" it by removing the s, thus creating the conflict.

In short, the channel's subdomain/invocation has to change. Vote above on the option you think would be the best alternative.

@spoco2 has proposed a channel named *Internet, described as follows:
The history and impact (past and present) of the wondrous Internet and World Wide Web. The place to come and marvel at how this thing we now take for granted came into being, and also gasp at how it's still changing the world today.
Should this channel be activated?

@longde has created channel *Africa. Before we activate or decline, as is demanded by @siftbot, we must first determine if there is adequate community support for the new channel.

So cast your vote above and the majority will determine the future of @longde's Africa Experience.

Just curious about how many of you ever browse the Power Point Award Feed. I was thinking it would be great to add another page under the Users tab that just lists all the available badges and the top earners for each badge so you know where you are in the standings and to highlight the top achievers. Then I realized we also have the Power Point Feed and wondered if anyone ever views it.

So, do you view it or even know it's there? And side discussion: what do you think of adding the Top Badge Earners page I described?

70s Channel - Approve or Deny

  (4 votes)

A total of 53 votes have been cast on this poll.

@shuac has returned with a new channel idea: *70s. This channel is described by shuac as follows:
Welcome to the 70s channel. Strap on your rollerskates and say good night to John-boy. This here's a totally munga channel for music, movies, and culture of the 70s. Tubular!
Cast your vote to help decide if the 70s channel should be activated as VideoSift's latest, greatest channel.

*Quirky Channel - Allow or Deny

  (19 votes)
  (28 votes)

A total of 47 votes have been cast on this poll.

@shuac is exercising his Ruby privilege to creating a new VideoSift channel. It is named *quirky and is described as follows:
The Quirky channel is mainly a subset of movies (Kubrick, Lynch, Wes Anderson, Jarod Hess, Paul Anderson, et al) but it also applies to most other visual media: art (Robert Crumb); standup comedy (Stephen Wright, Emo Phillips); television (Twin Peaks); music...pretty much any video media can be quirky.

The particular element that makes something suitable for the Quirky channel is "overtly producing something that's not necessarily meant for widespread appeal" like a piece of art that speaks to only a tiny handful of people. But it can also apply to something designed with high artistic merit that just so happens to catch on with the masses. Even television commercials can be quirky and they're most definitely designed for a mass audience so I see the Quirky channel as having great crossover appeal.
Cast your vote above to help decide whether or not the channel should be activated.

*Teaching Channel Submitted For Your Approval

  (6 votes)

A total of 47 votes have been cast on this poll.

@Sagemind has created the Teaching channel and as is tradition on VideoSift, it must first meet the approval of the community before it can be activated. The channel is described by @Sagemind as follows:
Teacher and Class Room Talk that is used for and is educational. Stories about education needs, education around the world. and concepts that drive the education/classrom world. Amazing Teachers, Amazing Classrooms, Pioneering classroom technique.

This does not include classroom pranks or other antics disguised to be educational. It also does not include videos that just fall under educational as just about any video can be educational in some sense..
Please cast your vote to approve or deny the activation of this new channel.

How Do You View VideoSift's Front Page Listing?

  (23 votes)
  (22 votes)

A total of 45 votes have been cast on this poll.

The default listing style of the front page is by Hotness, which includes any videos deemed "hot" by siftbot.

The alternate listing method is Newness, which is all Sifted videos in the order of most recently published videos first (regardless of original submission date).

So, tell us how you normally enjoy experiencing the front page, and if you're capable of it, please justify your answer and show your work or you may receive only partial credit.

New ruby member @ponceleon has decided to claim the rights to the channel that came with the shiny ruby. The proposed channel is *undead and is described by ponceleon as follows:
For all your contagion, blood virus, rage zombies, living dead, lich kings and queens, mummy, vampire, banshee, ghost, and everything else that is moving and probably shouldn't be!
Vote whether or not this channel should be activated.

A total of 41 votes have been cast on this poll.

Member @ctrlaltbleach has decided to use his shiny new ruby (congrats, btw!) to create a new channel. Submitted for your approval is the France channel. As ctrlaltbleach describes it:
Anything and everything having to do with France, the French language, and French culture.
It's unclear as to whether french kissing, french fries, french doors, or french ticklers will be permissible.

Update: Per ctrlaltbleach's request, the proposed channel shall be named "French" rather than "France." If that causes you to want to change your vote, yell and scream about it here.

New Channel Pending Approval: DEATH. Approve or Disapprove?

Member @AdrianBlack has achieved RubyHood and has decided to create a VideoSift channel, as is a privilege that comes with your ruby. Death is the channel AdrianBlack has decided to create.

As the community decided after Wilhelm, all new channels must be put up for community review before approval or denial. Vote above whether or not you feel the death channel should be activated.

Does the Sift Seem Faster?

We just implemented some database load balancing today which, from what I can tell, sped up page load a bit, but I was just wondering if the Sift has also started to seem faster for you.

For the interested, our database is our #1 bottleneck because the site has so many intricacies and allows for so many user customizations, so it's always the primary cause of our usually less than speedy page loads. We are hoping that by splitting our database across two beefy servers, there will be a much welcomed improvement in average load time.

Accept or Reject New Channel: Arthropodology

  (9 votes)

A total of 47 votes have been cast on this poll.

As described by its creator, @NordlichReiter: "Arthropodology. The study of Arthropods. Insects, Arachnids, and Crustaceans. Post your insects and arachnids here. crustaceans are welcome too, but not so much."

If it's accepted, we'll definitely have to at least change the name so the address/invocation is something simpler (e.g., arthropod.videosift.com).

Would Post Titles Look Better Like This?

  (5 votes)
  (34 votes)

A total of 39 votes have been cast on this poll.

For no real reason whatsoever I was just playing with some different fonts for the title text of videos and wondered what ye all might think. I think the font looks pretty eye-catching, but it's also a little bit of jarring because I'm so used to the plain old font.

In any case, you can try it out by adding ?fonttest=1 to the end of any VideoSift URL. For example:
http://videosift.com?fonttest=1
http://videosift.com/talk?fonttest=1
http://videosift.com/video/Enya-Watermark?fonttest=1

What do you think? Just curious.

[update]
I can see that this poll is heading downhill fast, so I've changed up the font a bit. This should get a few more Yes votes!
