Erics PSA: Don't forget to vote for the videos you like

It seems fewer sifters are voting on videos these days, and it's becoming increasingly more difficult to get videos sifted for those who post them. I'm sure it's obvious to everyone that traffic is just a fraction of what it once was, but it seems to me the ratio of sifters viewing videos to voting for them has gone down quite a bit. Not sure why that might be. I was wondering if it may be that more people are on mobile devices, and that makes it more difficult to cast votes (i've never owned a smartphone so don't know if it's more difficult) or just not as inclined to vote when mobile. Anyway if you happen to have cut back on voting do tell if it's for any particular reason.

Do you consider the film Die Hard a Christmas movie?

So ive recently heard debates regarding Die Hard being a Christmas film, and was wondering what you all thought. Also curious if age has anything to do with it.

Dope Die Hard Christmas ornament (doesn't mean it's a Christmas movie)

Also when you think Christmas film, what film comes to mind first? and maybe second and third (Not counting made for TV)

What's the point of not being able to dead an unsifted video

@lucky760 and @dag I'm pretty sure this has been brought up before. I don't understand why we are not able to dead a video that is unsifted? If there is a reason i'd be interested to know it. IMO seeing a dead video on the front page and no way of removing it is just annoying, poor form and bad for the site.

and while i'm at it another thing that has been brought up before...

In the new layout once you are in a channel (ex: there is no easy way to get back to the full site. In the previous version* you clicked on the sift logo in the upper left corner to return to the full site. Not so in the new version. Another sifter brought this to my attention and asked if there was a way that he wasn't aware of. All i could see doing is changing the url or going to a non new page version like comments then clicking on the logo. IMO that's seems broken and not something purposely done. Although if it was a purposeful change id be interested to know why.

*If you would rather use the old VideoSift version you can go to the bottom of any new videosift version page and at the bottom click 'beta opt out'.

End of harassing @lucky760 (for now). You know i love you

Vimeo Vs YouTube

I was curious if anyone knows the differences between HD Vimeo and HD 720 YouTube? Is there a difference or is it exactly the same? Are there other things that go into the video other than just resolution? I always seem to think vimeo looks better, but it may be a preconceived bias my brain makes true.

Concerning dead videos

Two things id like to see changed regarding dead videos.

1. Videos that are unsifted should be able to be deaded. At the current time videos unsifted cannot be deaded for what reason i don't understand. No reason to have a dead video on the front page, and if it is deaded more chance for it to get fixed and back into the world of working videos quicker.

2. No more 2 day wait to fix a dead video by another sifter(not original sifter). Id like to see all dead videos go immediately into the dead pool. I see no reason for them not to. The quicker they get there the quicker they might be fixed.

I would have made a poll but just seems like a no brainer as i see no upside to keeping it the way it is...other then @lucky760 will have to do some mucking with the code (its not like he has a real job and kids to take care of)

Slow page load times

For the past 2 weeks to maybe a month ive been getting crazy slow load times for VideoSift pages(although it does seem to vary maybe with time of day). I'm wondering if this is an issue for everyone and if something has changed to have made this an issue. Maybe @dag or @lucky760 can shed some light on this. Thanks

Some People Just Shouldn't Travel

I got a kick out of this. Thought I would share. (thanks @Lann)

1. “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.”

2. “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallarta to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘siesta’ time — this should be banned.”

3. “On my holiday to Goa in India , I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.”

4. “We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price”

5. “The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room.”

6. “We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yellow.”

7. “They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax.”

8. “No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.”

9. “Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.”

10. “We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.”

11. “The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun.”

12. “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England . It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.”

13. “I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends’ three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller.”

14. “The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the resort’. We’re trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service.”

15. “There were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.”

16. “We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.”

17. “It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel.”

18. “I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes.”

19. “My fiance and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.”

btw is a post like this allowed on the front page of sift talk? I thought there had been a discussion but i cant recall the outcome.

Do you watch related videos?

Every video sifted has an area at the bottom of the page with five related videos. I was just curious if anyone watches them.

Wanted: YouTube to AVI download and converter

Looking for a recommendation of an easy to use all in one program that can download and convert YouTube Videos to an AVI file. I've seen some that are online but they only allow for you to do shorter videos. I'm looking for something that will allow for hour plus long videos.

I've tried to download two different programs so far. The first wanted to load a bunch of other stuff onto my puter and the second one ended up being a trial that wouldn't let me download the total file. Any Ideas or recommendations?
