Zifnab's Sift Talk Posts

mintbbb is Your New Supreme Empress

I would like to congratulate @mintbbb on passing me to become the new number one all time sifter. I am amazed at the sheer volume and quality of videos that mintbbb constantly finds and sifts. mintbbb is well deserving of the number one spot and I'm sure she will have a long reign at the top.

I don't have near the time I used to for sifting and I find I can't keep up with all the great new sifters we have, it's great to see the infusion of new talent. I had hoped to be the first to 100,000 before mintbbb caught me (as I new it was inevitable that she would catch and pass me), but that didn't come to pass.

Congratulations mintbbb! I see a long reign in your future. Sift long and prosper!

Canada is GOLDEN!!!

What a way to cap off an amazing Winter Olympics, Canada wins Hockey gold with a 3-2 overtime victory over the USA! Sidney Crosby is the overtime hero scoring the goal 7:40 into OT, while Roberto Luongo backstops Canada to the win! It was an amazing game, the US played their hearts out. The game went to overtime after the US managed to score a goal with their goalie pulled and only 25 seconds left in the game.

The hockey gold brings Canada's gold total up to 14 making it the most gold medals any country has ever won in a single Winter Olympics.

I've been fortunate to be a part of the games as a volunteer working on the helpdesk at the Olympic Family Hotel, I have one shift left tomorrow and it has been an amazing experience. The atmosphere and energy in Vancouver over the span of these Olympics has been simply amazing, unlike anything else I have been able to experience. I'm sad that it is coming to an end tonight with the closing ceremonies, the games have gone by too fast.

Congratulations to all the athletes.

Here is a picture of me in my volunteer uniform at the Olympic Cauldron.

The Onion Was Correct in 2001, What About This Time?

The Onion ran a story just before the 2001 inauguration of President Bush with the headline:

Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'

Looks like they nailed that one!

Anyone care to take a guess at what headline The Onion will come up with for Obama's inauguration?

Here are a few bits from the article that seemed to be spot on.

What to do with Dead PQueued Videos?

Normally only published videos may be declared dead. That wasn't an issue in the days before the PQueue as un-published dead videos would just go the way of the dodo and never be seen again. But now un-published videos go to the PQueue and will just stay there even if they are dead as the *dead invocation won't work on them (as seen in this example).

We should be able to use the *dead invocation on PQueue videos and I can think of three things to do with them:

1. Treat them the same as other dead videos, go to the dead pool with the rest of the deadites.
2. Discarded if the owner dosn't fix it with a period of time.
3. Purgatory! Send it to a special dead PQueue area where the original submitter can fix it, but it isn't shown in any of the other areas. (Proably not a great solution as the issue of dupes will come up, but I just like saying Purgatory)

Personal Queue and the Top 15

There are going to be some great videos that for some reason or another get stuck in a personal queue. If a video manages to make it out of a personal queue it would have no chance of making the top 15 no matter how good it is or how many votes it makes as the top 15 is based on Queue date. I think that if a video manages to make it out of a personal queue it's date for the purposes of the top 15 should be reset.

Arvana's Got a Diamond!

And the hits just keep on coming, Arvana has hit 250. Lets hear it for the caretaker of the Nature channel. I'm sorry to say that he is no longer the lone sifter in the top 15 without a diamond, so give his queue some love to make him feel better.

Here are few of my Arvana favorites:
Best pre-flight safety announcement EVAR!
Laser Beam Magic
Colin & Ryan do something TOTALLY UNEXPECTED in Film Noir

Comedy Central Embeds Denied for Canada

Well first it was the Comedy Central web sites, including the great new Daily Show site, that were being re-directed for Canadian's. The old embeds still worked until now... It looks like those have now been blocked as well.

Anyone find a proxy that works to get around this yet? The one's I've found haven't worked for the video's.

I'm also going to send a complaint to The Comedy Network about this. It probably won't do much good, but it's worth a shot.

Tagging 101

Since there have been a number of discussions around tags I thought it might be worthwhile if some sifters could offer some advice on best practices when tagging videos.

I think everyone kind of tags their own way and it might be helpful to have a discussion about the pros and cons of the different tagging methods. Maybe provide some examples of good and bad tagging and some explanation of why.

I think some new sifters may be a bit confused by tags and if we can offer some guidelines and a bit of clarity it might help everyone out.

Well just some thoughts I had running through my head so I thought I'd share...

500 Ants!!

Our infamous worker ant has reached 500 published videos! This makes him the third sifter to reach 500. Great work ant! Lets give him a round of applause and celebrate this great accomplishment.

Woah, funky new YouTube player

I was surprised to see the new YouTube player popping up the 'related' videos and other on-screen options. I didn't see the new player when I was looking at vids on YouTube directly only on the embeds. It'll take a bit to get used to it, and it will seem weird to flip to a 'related' vid while keeping the same VidoeSift title. I wonder if it'll confuse anyone into voting incorrectly if they accidentally change to a 'related' video and think it was the original post.

Dailymotion not embeddable?

Well I was trying to fix one of my favorite

dead posts
and I found a replacement on Dailymotion, but alas I cannot embed it .

Here's the dailmotion vid...

<div> value="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/4yDDtxyxrDyIv9jIa"> src="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/4yDDtxyxrDyIv9jIa" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="335"
