BicycleRepairMan's Sift Talk Posts

Welcome to *debunked !

Welcome to the *debunked channel! I have started invocating a few classics that came to mind, and I look forward to more delicious debunking being put in there, typical, great examples of debunking would be James Randi's classic debunking of Uri Geller on Carson, (just about anything with Randi is appropriate i guess, this channel is dedicated to people like him) or Michael Shermers classic TED talk, and not least videos of magic stuff that just doesnt work, like the hilarious video of this atheist being cursed (to no avail) on indian TV.

So again, welcome to all, if you post or watch a video related to debunking, don't hesitate to invoke the channel, I dont have time to backtrack the entire VS library, but I've started off with a few good examples of what I mean by "Debunked!"

Steam is coming to Mac!

Well, finally, valve brings steam to mac, and with it every game in their library, = all of Half-life, counterstrike, day of defeat, team fortress ,Left 4 Dead, Portal and the whole thing. It seems they´ll also make it supereasy for devs to port their games and release their games on mac through steam. As a recent Macbook Pro buyer, for me this is amazing news. Also, will this mean lack of games is no longer an excuse not to sell your soul to Steve Jobs buy a mac?

Oh Yeah.

Google Wave

So, I got a Google wave account, who wants to touch me?

Seriously tho, anyone else tried it?, Its kinda cool, but not that different from IM, really, and visiting the public waves nearly always crashes your browser because of the content. I got 8 invites upon joining, and today I got 16 more, so I guess it'll spread pretty fast by now. Are there any plans to integrate it with VS, and does anyone have any good tips, downloads or gadgets to share?

Microsofts Worldwide Telescope! YES!

If you havent already done so, I highly recommend checking out the WorldWide Telescope, yes, yes, Google-did-it-first with Google sky in Google Earth, but seriously WWT is more awesome, its got lots and lots of guided tours by astronomers and its generally much prettier.

Its an amazing tool for learning about stuff in the universe, and I'm sort-of bummed it hasnt gotten more attention.

I'd say this is just about the coolest thing MS has released, and its completely free too. Its still in Beta, so there are some bugs in there, but its still pretty awesome.

Astronomy is cool: The Birth Cry of a Supernova!

Phil Plait has written an article about a recently discovered supernova, this is one of the coolest science articles I've read recently, I highly recommend checking it out

I can also easily recommend a Bad Astronomy daily intake, its one of the best blogs out there, IMO

Requeue button

Is there any chance we can get a requeue button/linky thing next to the video, so that we dont have to spam the comments with invocations and siftbot replies.. There are so many videos now with like 4 or 6 "comments" that are simply requeue requests and confirmations.. it looks spammy and annoying at this point.. videos that are slow out of the queue all get spammed down with this. its ok with invocations to add channels, tags and promotes, but requeue is only for the submitter anyways, right?

By the way, isnt resift or resubmit a better word?, certainly easier to spell.. and more logical now that the queue is called Unsifted..

Ron Paul Newsletters..

I've been following the online Ron Paul-mania for some time now, and this just surfaced on

Today, as New Hampshire voters headed to the polls, The New Republic published an article carefully timed to hurt Ron Paul.

This article rehashes an old issue of quotations from newsletters published under Dr. Paul's name, but not edited by him. Dr. Paul takes full responsibility, as he has for over a decade, for failing to adequately monitor the words that went out under his name.

Apparantly it was this article (not linked to by Ron Pauls site) that prompted his response:

The Newsletters in question are supposedly full of various forms of racism, ad hominems, name-calling, sexual bigotry and conspiracy theories. According to Ron Paul, he didnt write them, so that doesnt matter.. but as stated in The New Republic article:

This portrayal might be more believable if extremist views had cropped up in the newsletters only sporadically--or if the newsletters had just been published for a short time. But it is difficult to imagine how Paul could allow material consistently saturated in racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and conspiracy-mongering to be printed under his name for so long if he did not share these views. In that respect, whether or not Paul personally wrote the most offensive passages is almost beside the point. If he disagreed with what was being written under his name, you would think that at some point--over the course of decades--he would have done something about it.

So there.

Rolf Eden (77) fights against discrimination and intolerance,1518,513579,00.html

The brave old man is fighting the good cause, after a 19 year-old refused to sleep with him "because he was too old"

"That was shattering. No woman has ever said that to me before," Eden told the tabloid. "I was crushed."

Heres a nice photograph from his happier days:

See Free Concerts in HQ -Arcade Fire fans, listen up!!

Hey all Rock'n'Rollers, How about seeing some high-quality streaming concerts for absolute free, including VS favourite Arcade Fire?

Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age, Amy Winehouse and lots more Streaming recordings(use dropdown menu "tirsdag" to change day)

The page is in norwegian, but you can find lots of other bands , including Queens of the Stone Age, Amy Winehouse and Incubus, to name a few. Also recommended: norwegian band My Midnight Creeps

The video of Arcade Fire is from the HOVE festival earlier this summer, but there is also a festival on RIGHT now, Gogol Bordello just finished, and the whole thing is broadcast LIVE and immediately posted here:

Peak hours at the Sift? When should I submit?

Living, as I do, in northern Europe, I realize I may be a little badly timed for most sifters, which I have gathered are north-Americans mostly. On top of this, my visiting time on the Sift is rather irregular as well..

So, whenever I submit a video I suspect might get popular, I sometimes feel that the timing is just bad, and it slips to the eternal darkness of Queue page 2, before receiving the 10 votes needed to get front-page exposure.

Does anyone know, what time on the day is the ideal posting time for receiving votes? I guess its a bit of a two-egged sword, since your vids get quickly bumped down when more videos are submitted..

Bill Moyer interviews E.O Wilson

Every once in a while I find a video on the web that I just have to post, but cant because it cant be found on the recognized hosts, this one is so good I'd though I'd atleast make a Talk post about it:

Dont know if its possible to embed this, but anyone with diamond (or "100"?) stars should atleast try and post this, an extremely fascinating interview with one of the greatest people alive today.

I cant wait till EOL goes online.

Top 15 Widget vs Good old List

That Widget is annoying for me, I understand and support the sifts efforts to get people to put it on their homepage, but why oh why must it completely REPLACE the beloved top15 here once I click one of the videos??!! I want to be able to pick another video from the list, without using the widget, so why cant you keep the old list below the widget or something, I dont want to use Back everytime or wait for the annoyingly small and slow cycle to complete..

BTW: i seem to remember trying to post this yesterday, I was not notified of any deletion, so sorry if its a double post..
