The history of bananas coming from Central America is rife with stories like these, especially during a time when monopolies were standard and there really were no limits on what companies could get away with. The business was brutal.

Note: "Company scrip" means they paid workers in fake money that was worth far less than real money. It was a frequent practice of monopolies and "company towns" back in the day.
