Railroad Thermite Welding

They use Thermite to form the weld because standard welding does not give 100% weld penetration. If you listen carefully, you can hear the ping sound when the rails fully join.

Interesting, must be a fairly constant temperature there.

In my country they welded the rails together to save money on maintenance, which was fine until the next hot summer when they all expanded and buckled.
