In the Himalayas, a system of marriage has evolved out of necessity. One wife shared between brothers means the land does not have to be broken up into smaller parcels, thus providing adequate food for all.

It also means fewer babies, since one woman can only become pregnant at the most about once a year, whereas a wife per son means many more grandchildren in the same amount of time.

With family planning being taught and fewer babies being born, this practice may become obsolete in time.
