Merce Cunningham's Septet - beguiling modern dance

Duration 2 min 18 seconds

The Guardian has started a series of articles on choreographers starting with Merce Cunningham who I had not heard of til today despite an interest in modern dance. This clip is strange but compelling with a simple piano accompaniment.

Some choice quotes;
"With its emphasis on line and shape, Cunningham's dance style looks on the surface quite balletic but his motives and methods are completely different. For him, dance is quintessentially about people moving; it has no necessary connection with music, or with stories, or with feelings."

"Composer Morton Feldman explained the process like this: "Suppose your daughter is getting married and her wedding dress won't be ready until the morning of the wedding, but it's by Dior."
