Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges

The plot is similar to John le Carré's novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. In the penultimate scene of episode #164 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Dr. Bashir (played by Alexander Siddig) confronts a superior officer after a mission (of clandestine meddling in Romulan politics authorized by Starfleet, a generally benevolent superpower, in an effort to secure allies against the expansionist Dominion). He berates Admiral Ross for compromising the principles of the Federation in the name of protecting it. The similarities to both the Cold War and the War on Terror are blazingly obvious. However, this was first televised in 1999.
