Hound Dog - "Big Mama" Thornton w. Buddy Guy 1965

Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton was born in Montgomery, Alabama one of seven children. Her father was a minister and her mother sang in the church. It was the church's early musical influences that helped her to win first place in an amateur singing contest where she was heard by Atlanta's Sammy Greene. After hearing her sing Greene invited Willie Mae to join his “Hot Harlem Revue” and at the tender age of fourteen she left home and began her musical career.
