The Babri Masjid (mosque) was destroyed by Hindu extremists on December 6, 1992. The destruction of the mosque led to riots across India in which Muslims were hunted down and massacred by gangs of Hindu nationalists (followers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - a right wing Hindu nationalist party).
