Crushing a steel drum...with Science!

Soda cans are for wimps! The Doctor Doctor duo performs a simple high school science experiment on a much larger scale. Watch as a 55 gallon steel drum implodes.

Water inside the steel drum boils into steam. It takes only 0.2 Litres of water to fill the whole 55 Gallon drum with steam!

When the sealed barrel is placed in ice-water, the steam cools and condenses back into water. Because water takes up 1/1600th the volume of steam, a strong vacuum forms inside the air-tight drum. Without internal pressure to conteract the pressure of the Earth's atmosphere, the drum is crushed from all sides.
