Colony Collapse Disorder - Why are the bees disapearing?

Colony collapse disorder is a phenomenon involving the dying off of a beehive or colony. The bees are not found dead around the hives, but seem to not return to their hives. Recently this has spread from the Western honey bee to colonies in Europe.

Along with recent research that shows cellphone signals may be to blame, previous research shows the causes may be environmental related stresses that affect the bee's immune system, pesticide use or genetically modified foods.

The bees are necessary to pollinate certain crops, in 2000 an estimated US$15 billion of crops relied on bee pollination.
