Big avalanche cuts off Valdez, Alaska from roads

An interesting situation here in Alaska.

First, it's been really warm, like 50F, for a week or so. The temps lead to lots of heavy warming snow, so no surprise that a big avalanche comes down in Thompson Pass, which covers up the road going into Valdez, Alaska.

Covers the road, meaning, like 100 feet deep of snow. It also dams the river which runs in the same canyon. The 100 ft snow dam that resulted has now turned the valley, with the highway in it, into a mile long lake, 60 feet deep and growing.

State Engineers say "Well, this is new..."
