The squishiness and vulnerability of a human brain

How does YouTube work and why do videos buffer?

VoodooV says...

so add in the bittorrenting to youtube and spread the bandwidth around.

maybe that's 94 percent wasted, but I would say only a small percentage of people don't ever watch the video.

pausing to let the buffer fill is optional anyway

Besides, I think @ChaosEngine is right and its more about back room business deals than it is about technology

and wasted bandwidth? we're talking youtube here, many would argue that it's already wasted bandwidth

How does YouTube work and why do videos buffer?

why the hell is it a big challenge? I realize that yes, Internet connections can be flaky and you can't always control it,

but to me, this is easily solved by simply WAITING and let the buffer fill up. But in certain cases, the buffer will only fill if the video is playing.

when you hit play, throw up a screen saying please wait while we download your video so that it can play in an uninterrupted fashion.

but nah, they'll never do that because we've allowed attention deficit disorder to flourish throughout the land so we are simply unwilling to tolerate waiting a bit.

I used to do this ALL the time when apple quicktime trailers for movies first became big. Hit play, but then immediately hit pause and wait for that bar to fill all the way to the right. Sure, sometimes I got impatient and hit play sooner when I thought the buffer was going to fill before I finished watching the video, and yes, sometimes I got burned on this, but hey, it was on me, not on my ISP, or the video I was watching.

You can't even do that with youtube videos though, If i hit play, and immediately hit pause to wait for the buffer to fill, it never will, because they've got some stupid rule in there to only fill the buffer if the video is playing. Get rid of that stupid rule and allow the buffer to fill and I guarantee you the buffering symbol will go away for a lot of people.

depending on how much data you have, this actually should be relatively easy to spot/stop.

It takes a while to encrypt a lot of data. With so many people using torrenting more and more to download large video files. Its going to take a long time for it to encrypt all of that. Now yeah, if you just have a bunch of spreadsheets and word documents in your my docs folder, yeah you're probably fucked. But IMO, you shouldn't keep small docs like that on your computer, you keep them on a flash drive not always connected to your computer. Just following with the idea that nothing critically important should be connected 24/7 to the internet anyway.

If you see your hard drive active non-stop even when you're not doing anything, that's your first clue something is amiss.

10 Things You Didn't Know About Anti-Matter

If it costs so much money and energy to produce even the tiniest amounts of antimatter, how can they realistically make enough to power a ship and propel it to Mars in 180 days?

Pascal's Wager Debunked?

VoodooV says...

it's a bullshit situation regardless of how you slice it. If god is the absolute judge of "good/evil" and "right/wrong" then if you believe only because you fear the consequences of hell (which is pretty much every believer in a fear-based religion such as Christianity) then god is going to see right through that and send you to hell anyway,

Meanwhile if you stick to your principles and adhere to rationality and are a non-believer, then here you got the situation where God has to say "hey here's a guy who doesn't worship me, but hey, he's true to his beliefs and using the brain I gave him" If he sends him to hell anyway, then he's an immoral god, simple as that.

These are the core problems of any fear based religion where threat of hell is the primary motivator. It just leads to a bunch of assholes who think they're kissing their gods ass, but if there really was a god, he's send them straight to hell for doing it solely to avoid hell, not because of true belief. For a true believer, hell would be irrelevant, he'd do it because he wants to do it, not because of the consequences.

Which leads to the argument that in reality, every single person would be sent to hell, because every believer is doing it because of the consequences.

No matter how you look at it, it's an immoral system. Human morality surpassed biblical morality a long time ago. Just gotta remind people of that. The more people actually read the bible, the more that will happen.

are you sure? the sift does seem to have a habit of banning people..supposedly permanently...and letting them back on eventually.

can you blame people for trying to circumvent banning if the perception is that banned people come back anyway?

Printing a gun is hard

VoodooV says...

its weird. I'm pro gun control, but I also really don't have too much of a problem with 3d printing being used for something like this.

One way or the other. America (and the world) has to...grow up and re-evaluate weapons and/or the people using those weapons.

In other words, One way or another, we are going to HAVE TO (in order for the species to survive) figure out a way to NOT kill each other.

whether it's some magic gun control law/enforcement or whether or it's a revolution in mental health care and/or conflict resolution or whether everything gets worse and there are thousands more mass shootings/killings and the survivors finally crack and say enough is enough.

One way or another. It will get better. Because 3d printers aren't going anywhere and they're going to get better and better. So either we figure it out, or the species ceases to be.

Crash Course: USH - The Constitution

Any time some moron gets it into their head that their state should secede from the union or just any time someone think states should have more rights, they should watch the video and know that WE ALREADY TRIED TO DO THAT.

Same thing with the 2nd amendment. We already tried giving virtually everyone a firearm, it was called the old west. Guess what? people got sick of the idea that they might die just walking down the street to get milk so they started to put away the guns!

I'd say the biggest problem we have as a Nation is what this video already talked about. the founders understood the balance between too much democracy and too many rich landowners having power and I'd say that that's the problem we're in right now. The rich have far too much influence over our gov't. One could argue that that was the whole reason for the Iraq war. People who get rich off of war wanted more money.

We also need to completely remove private money from our elections.
