How Trump Uses Language

RFlagg says...

I think article linked below on reading level is important to note in regards to this.
https://contently.com/strategist/2015/01/28/this-surprising-reading-level-analysis-will-change-the-way-you-write/ By keeping his language simple, he is able to reach, and have his keywords understood by a larger American audience. Of course understanding speech and reading are slightly different, but it's word choice still becomes important.

As this video notes. Trump is a salesman. And he's selling his crap expertly well. He circumvents the answer with babble that never actually answers the question. He never answered if it's un-American to have a religious litmus test to allow people to visit the US, he just says we have a problem, and implicates all the people of one faith in that, which ISIL itself said sometime ago was their goal, to turn the world against all of Islam to make it easier to recruit and radicalize more people... which is off topic. He doesn't address the point of the question, he sort of skirts it and generalizes it into his overall framework. One could argue that yes, saying there's a problem is itself an answer to the question, but it isn't a direct answer.

I don't know as if he's intentionally talking at that low a level though, or if he's just his style period.

It'd also be interesting to see if Hitler's run-up to being elected, if he used similar style. That is if he used a simple style to appeal to the masses. Not just Hitler, but other leaders of his ilk. I choose Hitler here as more an example of an elected leader gone wrong, that had mass appeal to his people, but later regretted to the point of shame.

Even if Britt's famed Warning Signs of Fascism isn't fully accurate by all scholars (and I'm aware he doesn't actually have academic scholarship) many do come close. I think most can agree that it requires at least Extreme Nationalism, warmongering, a loss of civil liberties and rights (Patriot Act, wanting to increase the spy power of the NSA, etc), corporatism a merger of the state and corporate power, racism (Britt's warning signs says sexism, but I think racism is more apt and I don't think what people normally think about sexism applies, though we need more of a racism slash something, to note those who "sin" differently than others, such as the gays).

Bill Nye - 5 Things You Need to Know About Climate Change

RFlagg says...

Yeah, I think that's what the deniers don't get. When 97% of scientist agree that humans burning fossil fuels is the primary driving force behind climate change, they are talking about the increase from what would be natural, to what is happening now. Nobody is claiming 100% of all global warming is human caused, just like nobody is coming for their guns, but the conservative media sells both that way.

Explaining the importance of the speed of the change can be difficult.

Yeah, that's the one. The thread got shut down for some reason, but I also wasn't a fan of the vertical video and sound quality and found what I thought would be a slightly better vid.

To Scale: The Solar System

To Scale: The Solar System

RFlagg says...

As a side note, I noted in the comments:
Heck people don't get the scale between the Earth and the Moon. The distance is so great that all the other planets of our solar system could fit in between the Earth and the Moon, while at aphelion anyhow, and have a bit of room to spare. If you arrange the planets pole to pole, then you can do it during the average distance of the moon's orbit. You can't pull the trick off while in perigee though as it gets about 27 kilometers too close, though this sort of shows the scale of the orbital eccentricity.

The Linguistics of African American Vernacular English

Yeah, I for one could really use an IPA for dummies or ELI5 of IPA... EDIT: The one's I've seen are still too complex, I need a better simplified one... lol.

I recommend just listening to the audio, it had some interesting points. But like many informational videos this one is edited with that standard infantile overuse of graphics, edits and effects.

Also am I the only one on the planet who doesn't understand usage of aɪər, ʉ, ð and sometimes ʊ? Wikipedia uses those IPA symbols like they are supposed to be helpful but they're Greek to me.

Cuba's DIY Inventions from 30 Years of Isolation

RFlagg says...

ELI5: Why is Cuba so isolated, and in such economic distress given that the sanctions are US only, and China and the rest of the world could easily trade with them. I'd think they'd have access to all modern technology not coming from US companies. I understand the citizens don't make much, but I'd think a robust world trade would have made them a bit better off... Is everyone so afraid the US will sanction those who trade with Cuba?

Making an Airbus A350 Airliner - Minute Physics

RFlagg says...

Isn't the A350 more like Airbus's response to the 787 Dreamliner... well, they likely both started design near the same time, just Boeing managed to beat them to out. I'm not sure where either company will try next. The A350/787, A340/777 and A380/747 markets cover all but more regional flights. So it'll be interesting to see where they go next...

A somewhat interesting video comparing the two (the more interesting part starts around 30 seconds in and ends by the time it gets to 2:15 after that the side by side comparison ends)

Why People Doubt Climate Science, And Why Facts Don't Matter

RFlagg says...

The real problem is that even once thing become so obvious that climate change is real, and the predictions are real, they'll still deny it was humans had anything to do with the acceleration of climate change, or at least they'll deny it had as much as science proves it does. They'll just point to it being more signs of the end times, which is all the more reason to vote against fundies, as they are prone to letting stuff go, or trying to encourage things to happen that they see as end time predictions just because they think if all the signs are there that means the return of Jesus is soon, of course they discount that there is an appointed time which might still be 50,000 years from now and if we muck things up now, that's 50,000 years of end times in full force that could have been avoided. And I base this on personal experience with deniers who are already willing to pass it off as just signs of the end of times...

Another problem is that they think that scientist are saying 100% of all climate change is caused by human activity, or at least that's how the right wing media sells that is what is being said. They don't understand that what is being talked here is the acceleration from the norm. They just point to the Earth goes through warming/cooling periods all the time and ignore the acceleration, and if they do acknowledge it, they pass it off as debatable, because the far right doesn't understand science (I should know I used to be one). Once the changes become so drastic, they'll just point to God letting go, or causing it for it being the end times, and point to the Bible versus that show such things will happen.

What $1000 In Rent Will Get You In Various US Cities

RFlagg says...

A $1000 a month? My last apartment was 2 bedrooms and one bath. Not sure the square footage, but it was decent enough. $450 or so a month. Canton, Ohio area people, come. There's no jobs here, and it's Ohio, so that sucks, but rent is cheap .

I thought they covered 2010 TK7 and Cruithne (not a trojan but promoted as Earth's second moon for a while) before, at least in their Deep Sky video series, but I'm not seeing it... And not under tdarnell's videos either...

Meanwhile, I didn't think this would get in the top 15 let alone the top 5... I figured it would Sift though...
