Feature Idea: Country Tags

By now some of you have probably noticed how anal I am about editing tags, especially in regards to the country the video pertains to. I know many of you feel similarly about country and region tagging. We wouldn’t have Canada, British, Asia, or the Downunder channels if no one cared. And when discussions of possible new channels come up, more than a few have suggested even more country/region related channels, such as Europe, Latin America, Japan, Ireland, etc. Then it hit me: Do what some video hosts do already, i.e., have little country flags attached to the video information section. Dailymotion does this already, and Funny Or Die also does it. However the country flags on their sites strictly pertain to the country where the video was uploaded from. I wan to do things a little different.

Instead of country flags for nation from which the video was uploaded, use them to relate to what the video pertains to. In other words, if a video shows a Japanese game show, then use the Japan flag. If it’s a music video from Abba, use the Sweden flag. If it’s about kangaroos, use the Australia flag, and so on. You get the idea. And if a video pertains to more than one country, then you can choose which one you think is most pertinent, or you could simply leave it blank. In other words the country flag would be optional, though I would prefer we use them as often as possible. Therefore the default setting would be <None>, but a a drop down menu would be available at the time of embedding to choose from. And you wouldn’t have to know the country’s flag because you would choosing by country name. Here’s how I imagine the drop-down menu would look when you’re embedding a video:

And then here’s how I imagine a video would look when it’s already embedded:

Notice I how I placed the edit option next to the flag. Just like tags, I’d like all gold members and above to be able to edit the country flag. When <edit> is clicked, a drop-down menu would appear just like the one in the embed screen. Also I’d like the flag to be identified if you hovered over it, and just like tags I’d like to be able to click it to see more videos with the same flag.

So is this feasible, or would it be too much work to implement? Here’s where you could find the flags of all sovereign states in the world:

Also, we could still keep the British, Canada, Asia, and Downunder channels. Too many videos are in these channels to get rid of them, I figure.

So, what do you all think?</edit></none>
