How Pros Wrap Extension Cords, Cables & Hoses

noims says...

This works well but it's hard to see if someone's done it right. when sailing I coil in a figure-of-eight, either by hand or with one end around a winch.

Why it's hard to be Republican w/a mind and heart

luxintenebris says...

the idea that those who support Roe v Wade are de-fetusists is absurd. it's reality. it's compassion. it's knowing life is cruel and we don't have to make it crueler.

even the belief that life begins at conception, ignores a significant fact: ~20% of all pregnancies end in stillbirth or miscarriages. many unnoticed or unknown. meaning a Crane takes many babies away before the crane can deliver them.

if the jokes ^ can make a person winch, then why doesn't knowing a woman will die not register? all for a law w/o good intent. for the intent to be real, there would be other realities already in place, such as...

- sex education - at all levels
- contraception for both sexes (even subsidized)
- prenatal care for the viable & wanted
- education for parents
- time off for parents
- groups privately aiding in the care (churches, societies...)
- daycare is provided privately, thru companies, or publically funded

...just possibly a few 'tells' that the morally magnificent are serious.

BTW: the FBI is no lie. don is dead in the water. cry a river but the flood awaits. don't know what's on the papers other than his ass. w/o someone paying the attys - he is defenseless. three times over - he is spit in the ocean. bet me.

"We still do not, of course, know exactly what the FBI found"

You amaze me with you utter gullible nature.

You stupid fuck stick.
Tell me EXACTLY what was FOUND?

Enlighten me with FACTS!

Everyone is speculating and no one has FACTS. NO ONE! ( except you)

I only call out fools like you.
When you are right I agree.
I can't remember you ever agreeing with me.
When you post a bad cop vid I agree
When you post a bad Republican , I agree
You however can never accept that you side can be so wrong at times. Facts do not matter to you, only MSM opinions do. Those are not facts.

Nauti-Craft Marine Suspension Technology

Drachen_Jager says...

But... they mostly do that with helicopters.

When they use boats they drop a line and winch the crew up/down because the oil rigs are generally way too tall to go from deck to deck.

Also, I'm not entirely sure this technology is safer in rough seas than a traditional hull, especially when you factor in the added risk of mechanical failure.

Crew transfers to and from oil rigs in heavy seas. That's profitable enough to not require anything else.

Helicopter lands on ship in rough seas

CrushBug says...

Thank god for those subtitles.

Also, that is very impressive. I read somewhere that some ship+helicopter setups have a winch system, where they basically pull the helicopter onto the deck from a hover to secure it.

Good guess.
...and good find @entr0py. That article explains a good bit (but still not all I wanted to know, like how does the 'winch' work?).

How is this accomplished?

Is it just thanks to nanoadhesion?

Why do so many videos nowadays demonstrate cool stuff without any sort of explanation. Down-vote!

Russian motorists rescue car from a ditch

Ashenkase says...

Dear non snow drivers,

In the absence of a winch, preferably a tow truck winch, this a great example of how to get unstuck.

- Keep the wheels straight, or as straight as possible. The more the wheels are turned the more difficult it is to extricate out of the stuck position.
- DON'T spin tires. They guy in the video didn't even have the car on. The more you spin, the more you dig, the more you dig the "stucker" you get. As soon as you hear tire spinning back off and try again.
- Rocking is good. The more you can gain momentum from rocking the better. It will let you spin the tires less and avoid digging the car deeper into the snow.
- Dig a trench for the tires if you can. The deeper the snow the better chance you have of catching the car on excess snow which then makes it even harder to get out. Digging trenches for the path out will help not build up snow on the way out. Foot, shovel, anything you can get to help the car out.
- Sand or kitty litter will help the drive wheels get some traction on the way out. Better yet chains will get you out of most anything, but you only usually see chains in mountainous areas or back country scenarios.
- Two words... Snow Tires (but they only make sense if you live in a temperament climate that receives snow fall, but man do they make a difference).

From the video it looks like first snow fall of the year. The tire tracks expose leaves and dirt underneath. First snow fall in my city means about 80-100 accidents in one day, its horrible. Changing mindsets from non-winter driving to winter driving is an exercise in observation and patience.

Panama Canal ship accident

Probably a cable on the left (right from our POV) snapped (or winch failed). People on deck seem to run there as if something important was happening there. It would also explain the movement of the ship.

How Not to Pull a Jeep from the Mud

newtboy says...

There was no way that was going to go well...you simply don't winch from the side. The best they could hope for was to tip it on it's side in the mud (not sure how that would help).
This is what happens when you don't attach your roll cage to the frame, it can rip right off the frame (with or without the body going with it). I actually expected it to roll over, ripping off the suspension, leaving the axles stuck in the mud and the rest of the Jeep upside down.

I doubt it has enough thrust to move of its own at all - even on smooth Tarmac. I agree, @artician - poor soul.

I have seen my share of fundamentally flawed projects, though - my old man kept building a humongous "winch" of some sorts, which was supposed to be used to excavate soil for building the foundation for a house. Problem was, of course, that the darn thing (apart from being useless) was so big and heavy that we'd need an excavator anyway, just to move it around - and then it would be much better, safer and faster to use said excavator to do the actual digging.
