Why the hell did they remake this movie. Gene Wilder is Willie Wonka. He has that devilish quality but he also has that twinkle in his eye that was missing with Johnny Depp.
[And Tim Burton is grossly over-rated as a director.]
I half agree.
The 1971 musical Willie Wonka movie was best. However, I like both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp's approach. It's sorta like choosing your favorite Bond or Dr. Who. Preference, of course, is Wilder, but I think Depp -- it's been a while (like 15 years) since I read the series -- I think Depp was truer to the original books.
Also, I think Burton is fantastic. Sure, maybe (maybe!) a little over-rated, but not too many directors make the kinds of movies he makes; so there's a little reasoning for why he *may* be over-rated.
Personally, I think carbon-based lifeforms are over-rated.

I like both versions of Willy Wonka and I don't feel they can really be compared. Depp's Wonka version is supposed to be creepy, without the twinkle, and the whole movie is a bit darker ( IMO anyway ). The cheap duplication of the midget for the Oompa-Loompas was a huge disappointment though. I really looked forward to the modern interpretation of them.

Yay, congrats. Even though we havn't had much interaction, I think you hit the nail on the head with this one: "you look like a broke-ass willy wonka".

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory: The Tunnel
sigh... this one time a few friends of mine and I were watching a dvd, turned it off, and Willy Wonka happened to be just starting on free TV. One friend had never seen it, so we decided it would be a good idea to introduce her to the wonder that is Wonka. Anyway... they got to the tunnel scene, and right as they were getting into the boat it went to commercial.
No problem, we though... it had just been several long songs, so they were due for the commercial break. When it got back, though... they were getting of the boat!
they cut the tunnel scene!
I guess it's "too scary" to have on free TV or something. I don't think we ever shut off a movie that fast, we were so pissed it was cut.
