Voice Input is The Future of Gaming

EvilDeathBee says...

Oh yeah, still definitely is. I meant when they were touting motion controls for the first time, like this is jokingly doing, except Nintendo were serious.

Motion controls will always suck because simply put, there's zero feedback in what you're doing, and there is no precision at all. Anything that requires precision and timing, it's utterly worthless.

At a previous studio I worked at, we made a Wii exclusive game and had jump as shake on the wiimote, after attempts to try and flick in the specific direction you wanted to jump in. What a disaster that was. Then there was flick up, that didn't work either so in the end we went with random shake and even then it was pretty clear, pretty quickly that even this was annoying, but we left it in. In the sequel we had the option to use A as jump (by default), it was much kinder on the wrist.

Was? (2nd usage)

Still is, at least until something decent is produced.

In saying that, I don't see how a lot of quality action games could solely use motion detection, as they would tire the player pretty quickly. Limited bits and pieces of motion detection or voice could be beneficial.

Swarm Robots Cooperate with AR Drone

Couldn't each ground unit just flash with a unique id code? ...and couldn't each instruction from the aerial unit then use a coded prefix to direct individual ground units? ...and couldn't that happen on the millisecond time scale?
The disco lights don't seem very efficient?

The problem is that the "skybot/drone" is using a relatively inexpensive webcam. These things don't have a very good framerate, and there are a lot of factors that ccould drop frames. If any frame is dropped, then it would misinterpret the "ID" of the ground robot. A webcam is good at discerning red vs. green vs. blue. Something that is faster- IR from a TV remote- has the problem of being non-dimensional, so the drone wouldn't know which ground robot was "talking". Something that might be neat would be the 2D IR sensor from a WiiMote, but I'm not sure what kind of framerate those are capable of.

Also, adding extra sensors to the drone, or getting better ones, or using a faster cpu, would not only increase cost, but more importantly decrease battery life of the drone.

Probably the speed of the LED blinking identification was slowed down for this demo, so it could be explained to the viewers. It's likely capable of going much faster.

The main problem I see in "real world" application is daylight - if it's bright outside, it's much harder to discern color. But at least if our robot overlords attack at night, we'll see them coming in rainbow glory!

Sony PlayStation Move - Tech Demo

I disagree that this is an "incremental" upgrade over the wiimote. I've used the wiimote and it is laggy, frustratingly inaccurate, and uncomfortable to hold. This looks *significantly* more capable. This is the type of controller we need to make games like Starcraft II and Diablo III portable to consoles. I'm also impressed by the 3d spatial qualities.

Zero Punctuation: Left 4 Dead 2 & New Super Mario Bros Wii

His right that SMBWii is just a juiced up SMB3 and some new innovations would of been nice but it's still some of the best fun I've had in a game this year. While I'd much rather Nintendo bring out more new brands like Pikmin, I'd still much much rather them bring out stuff like SMBWii than any more Wii <activity> games.

Just avoid the propeller hat and you'll find a much deeper game, I'm fairly certain that item exists purely to make the game easier for casual players, as most challenges that would of required careful timing and jumping skills, turn in to a single shake of the wiimote.

Prayer bead attachment for the Wii

spoco2 says...

It so saddens me that so many sites posted this as genuine... I mean really... GAH! Critical thinking has died on the internet, it's a sad, sad world.

This is quite funny, that people would ever believe it was real isn't.

(Really, how many tip offs do people need in order to work it out? The lack of any synchronisation between the kids and the on screen things, the lack of any actual appreciable gameplay that kids would want to partake in, the cover that slips over the whole wiimote that stops you actually being able to use the buttons, the mentioning of expansion packs before it's even out (they always wait a while for that), the ridiculous stool add ons that work as something funny, but would never be sold as an accessory... and... well, the 'prayer works interactive'... they don't have a website, they would have if this were real).

*sigh*

Zero Punctuation - Wii Sports Resort

jubuttib says...

Heh, pretty much what I expected.

I too am guilty of using the Wii more as an emulator than anything else, and with Homebrew Channel I don't even have to pay for a botched up PAL-conversion of a classic NTSC game. That said there are some games that I enjoy more on the Wii than on anything else. Well, A game to be exact. I got my Motion+ bundled with the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, and while not perfect, it is the best golf game on any console or computer ever. Pretty much the only thing missing now is the height of the club from the ground, and if they decide to include that you're better of just playing real golf. Oh yeah, and they fucked up the spin thing, it's almost disabled if you use the Advanced Swing.

Aaaanyway, the truth is that Motion+ is something that should have been there from the beginning, it's a bit too late now. It makes such a huge difference to what the wiimote can do, but now it's kind of a moot point.

I still like my Wii and play it regularly. Too bad it couldn't live up to the hype.

15 Tonne Grapples controlled by wiimote...

How does the Wiimote work without the infrared receiver in front of it?

The Wii remote only uses the infrared receiver for screen positioning, so the Wii knows where the Wii remote is pointing precisely. Otherwise the infrared receiver is useless. Aside from that the Wii remote has accelerometers within it, which communicate through blue-tooth, and this is what registers the Wii remotes' trajectory and motion in space. This latter technology is what this demo is using. Since there is no need to use the Wii remote as a pointing device here, they don't need the infrared at all. Only it's ability to detect motion and direction.

Terrible Games From A Terrible Games Company

spoco2 says...

Why is the father in Peter Pan talking to himself:
Father:"Do you know what's happened to my tie"
Father:"No I don't, perhaps it's in a draw"

And definitely on the Disney, well, and pretty much any other successful kids movie. We have land before time, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Lion King.

Man, how do they sleep at night knowing that unsuspecting parents have bought their kids these games and those kids have been forever traumatized.

Horrible.

I had a similar gaming experience just recently. Myself and my kids were given a Wii for Christmas (huzzah), and so I was out looking for a budget game to add to Wii Sports. Well, I couldn't find anything that I'd seen a good review of, so I stupidly purchased something that was budget priced and looked like it would give the kids some fun little games to play like they do with Wii Sports (they're 4 and 5 yrs old)... well... I was stupid.

I bought this game and got it home... and then was STUNNED at the abysmal quality of it.

Something I thought would be really easy for them is the old slam the hammer on the thing to ring the bell game... NOPE. First you had to do a pumping motion really hard with the nunchuck, then you had to press a button the wiimote, then you had to spin the wiimote around and around to erm... charge up something, then you had to press another button and do a downward motion with the nunchuck.

HOW HARD would it have been to just have it be a swing down motion with the bloody wiimote?

And pretty much every game was either overly complex or just INSANELY difficult.

Then the story mode was of the same ilk as the ones in this video... stationary pictures with a few cutouts moving across the screen with no animation, and piss poor voice work.

So, because of that I will NEVER buy a game made by 'Play Zone'.

I was just glad it was the first game I'd ever bought from an EB games, because they take returns just because you thought the game was crap.

Thank god for that!

If you ARE after a good game for preschoolers, can I recommend Diego Safari Rescue. Awesome game that my kids love AND can control really easily, and yet has a large range of different wiimote actions that fit in with the things they're doing onscreen... really well made game.
