What American English sounds like to non-English speakers

kymbos says...

That is brilliant! But are you sure it's a parody and not more of an... interpretation? I lived in France in the 1990s and their variety shows were full of this 50s-80s nostalgic American-inspired live pieces. They had (have?) this guy called Johnny Halliday who is a classic American throwback but they absolutely adore him. And the Hoff is still huge in Germany, right?

Is it possible they just wanted to do an American style piece, but didn't have the language?

Supermarket bum sniffer wanted by UK police

choggie says...

Doesn't look like he's sniffing so much as he is trying to log some close-in face time with girls' asses....he's probably hoping to get a whiff of those man-needed pheromones, that all you ladies make us crazy with whether you realize it or not.

Yeah lock him up Hybrid, what'll that accomplish and how much time do you think they should give the poor guy? He needs to be placed in the town center in stocks in his birthday suit, and have children and grandmothers parade by and tickle his bum with ostrich feathers-and then force him to host his own variety show on BBC-3.

Olbermann Slamming Glenn Beck Again

gwiz665 says...

I'm getting Tired as Hell of Olberman's kindergarten variety show. Yes, Glen Beck is insane, do correct him at every turn. But this is like a terrible, terrible Daily Show. It's not news, it's a travesty.

Fox News and segments like these are exactly the same. Ugh. Rise above it, Keith, you're better than this.

A question about wacky Japanese TV clips (Asia Talk Post)

SDGundamX says...

It's just a convention of their media. Pretty much all "variety shows" use it. (Variety shows are shows that have Japanese entertainers or athletes compete in contests or quizzes, or take part in panel discussions.) I guess the Japanese really like to see the unfiltered reactions of celebrities when unexpected things happen.

Creepy Live Action Spanish Version of The Simpsons

I am pretty sure this is duplicate, since I was even asked to translate the video back when it was sifted. Perhaps is dead now, but I hope the winkler1 checked.

Living in Miami, I'm constantly bombarded by Hispanic culture and one thing that has always BOGGLED MY MIND is their television. I just don't understand it at all... like, has their television historically been SO bad that shit like this is considered quality entertainment? The same goes for all the telenovelas and variety shows like "Sabado Gigante" and whatnot. Their prime time banner television is worse than the worst English daytime television. It's really, truly, revoltingly bad stuff.

First, that's not Hispanic, is a show from Spain.
Second, realize that the culture in Miami does not represent the Latino community as a whole. I am South American and I puke every time I turn on a Hispanic channel. For several reasons, one being how awful it is as you have already said. Another is, that it does not represent, nor is even close to my culture. Those channels are mainly aimed at low class Mexicans and Cubans since that is the majority of individuals in South Florida and California, etc. Think of them as redneck television or something along those lines.

Third, sorry but nothing is worse, more revolting, disgusting and substandard than shows like The Jerry Springer show. Just as I don't go generalizing the entire American culture based on shows like springer please don't generalize Hispanics based on two channels aimed at only a small portion of the entire Hispanic community.

Not trying to argue with you, just felt some things needed to be put on the table in regards to your comment.
I am also baffled at the content of these channels, is a pretty sad thing but so it's MTV! Just saying, TV sucks everywhere.

John Farnham - You´re the voice

I'm not sure well how he did around the world, but ol' Whispering Jack was anything but a one-hit-wonder in Australia. He was pretty big stuff for decades down here. He did concerts with big names like Tom Jones, and used to show up on TV a lot (I remember him on appearing on the variety show Hey Hey, it's Saturday a lot).
I wouldn't think there would be any household not guilty of owning one of his singles or albums

Interesting. In Germany he is only known for "You´re the voice".
I must admit there are a few "maybe it was two or three hits" videos in my list, but they all certainly have that feeling of "where did they go after that?" to them.

Orson Welles turns the tables on Dick Cavett

spoco2 says...

Fantastic stuff... really fascinating. I don't know Dick Cavett, me being Australian.. but in response to dag. "I wish Talk Shows were like this still. Compare this to something like Jay Leno." You're looking at the wrong shows, they're variety shows, you're after real interview shows.

Here in Australia, we have the brilliant 'Enough Rope' with Andrew Denton: http://youtube.com/results?search_query=denton+enough+rope&search=Search

Or in the UK there is Parkinson: http://youtube.com/results?search_query=Parkinson&search=Search

The shows are there, you just need to know where to look.

Dick Dale & The Del Tones - "Misirlou" 1963

rustybrooks says...

It's funny, the music seems so dark and almost subversive and there they are with short hair and cute little suits holding their guitars like they're on one of those variety shows with an orchestra that all stand behind those podiums. I will never understand the 50s and early sixties.

Gandhi pole dances: the vid that got YouTube banned in India

Farhad2000 says...

A trend of national governments blocking access to the intertubes? Not really.

It's been a state sanctioned activity across the Middle East, India, Pakistan and China. Everything from blocking democratic discourse to blocking criticism of the goverment to blocking good old pornography (though this is ratified by Hotstar 101).

In half it's about political control of the people through access to information, in the other half it's really about misguided censorship by an aging ruling class. Like this for example, this really looks like a Indian Student Association variety show, with young indians that don't connect Gandhi to personal history of the independence struggle, while older folks would. And such is life. Especially since there is friction between the old gen and new gen in India.

I think the video is simply poor. And another excuse for Delhi to wage it's blind war on culture modernization.
