Texts from Russian soldier to mother before he was killed

spawnflagger says...

wow, didn't realize the Russian soldiers all had their phones. seems it would be relatively easy for Ukrainian telecoms to track every Russian SIM/IMEI, at least within 20m accuracy.

vil said:

I was reluctant to believe this was possible because only idiots would let kids keep their mobile phones while they are driving a tank, but apparently some russian units are so badly equipped or their comm equipment is so bad that they use phones for communication. The induced incompetence of a dictatorship is mindboggling.

RANT: 20 Things Your IT Guys Want You to Know

ulysses1904 says...

"job security"? We got outsourced to some offshore low-bidder whose call center was apparently staffed by AOL dial up veterans. The very first all-hands telecom was hosted by some guy on the other side of the planet, who actually spent 30 minutes reading off names instead of using some modern technology to capture attendance. I'm glad I got out of that racket.

I love how frustrated IT guys get with the very reason they have job security to begin with.

"ALL YOUR BROWSING HISTORY ARE BELONG TO ME" (Wtf Talk Post)

newtboy says...

Interesting that the 50 no voters received only 10% less than the yes voters from telecom. I guess they wouldn't stay bought, or are they just holding out for more?
Either way, we're hosed. They absolutely do not represent their voters.

Oh, and for those interested, here's a discussion of a chart showing the $$$ contributions sitting US senators accepted from the telecom industry that stands to gain so much from this bill.

It should be worth noting that your cell-phone browsing will likely be subject to the same laws.

I understand being cynical when two giant corporations (Disney/Globe Telecom) use this feel good (real world issue for some) to sell you a product. I find the idea that they give two shits laughable. I do however like the *commercial.

Pedestrian bridge is built for safety

spawnflagger says...

It looks like the wires going *through* the steps are just telecom - wouldn't kill anyone. However on the opposite end of the bridge, right at head level, those ARE high voltage lines.

I'd love to get in on this conversation because this subject really interests me. This video touched on a lot of interesting theories.

@robdot - I don't understand people who think they "know" the answers to the universe. There are unanswered questions in every model. Do you know the answer to what dark matter and energy is? Nobody has yet detected it. Yet, our "universe" is supposedly filled with the stuff.

Let's also define what a universe is. My definition is; it's a place governed by the same set of physical laws.

So we have "our" universe, that we hypothesize about through our observations and measurements. We have theories that say "other" universes exist in some form or another. If their physical laws are different then ours, there would probably be no way to observe them, and therefore no way to prove their existence. Lack of proof is not proof that it doesn't exist.

I could write a book on what i "think" about what our universe is. For simplicity, let me just say that I moved from telecom engineering to software architect. In software, we create programs to run simulations. We create vast game worlds with whatever "physical" attributes we want to program into them. Lets assume we created artificial intelligence. In what context would "it" live? Most everyone assumes it would just be one conscience interacting with us in the form of a robot (Que cheesy Hollywood films).

Let's give it the power of quantum computing. It then decides to understand us (it's creator), it needs to program a simulation that mimics all it knows about our physical world. It wouldn't make one simulation, run it and be done. It would make many simulations, probably simultaneously, tweaking each new one based on the results of the previous ones.

Just imagine where this could lead. This intelligence could figure out how to create a multitude of different, very elegant universes. Its time scale would be different then our time. It's simulation could take seconds on its viewing scale, but appear to be billions of years when observing from within it. We have the power to pause, rewind, replay, tweak our simple creations. Imagine what this super intelligence could do with theirs?

Stripping the paint off a car with a 1000 watt laser

charliem says...

Lasers have a pretty amazing attribute where you can use a wavelength that is only absorbed by certain materials, leaving all other materials entirely untouched by the photons (as they have a very high reflectivity or transmission index for the wavelength).

No idea whats going on with this system, but its possible they are using a colour that is optimised for maximal paint absorption (heats up the paint the most), whilst at the same time maximal metal reflection (doesnt transfer any energy into the metal).

I was thinking the same thing. No physical force, but I can imagine it's very easy to build up heat with this thing.

a 1kw diode.......I work in telecoms around 300mW is the most ive seen, and thats extremly dangerous for your eyes.

This thing?

Uhh....nope....nope nope nope nope nope.

As to the fumes, it looks as though the front of this thing has a vacuum nozzle, you can see the dust particulate being sucked into it as he ablates the paint in some parts of the vid.

Collegehumor Breaks Down Net Neutrality

charliem says...

This is telecoms double dipping.

People pay for access to the internet, as do content providers. That is already happening right now...right now.

The new proposed laws will allow telecoms to charge for CONTENT over that access.

You may have paid hefty sums of money for a 100mbit upload speed, but that doesnt give you 100mbps transit through their network....or so they say.

Its bullshit, this is their way of saying...ok, youve only paid for the ACCESS segment of the internet, if you want CARRIAGE then you have to pay us again.

Its garbage, these costs have already been factored into your access fees from day zero, and now they just want more...and if you dont pay it, well fuck you.

John Oliver Leaves GM Dismembered in Satans Molten Rectum

MilkmanDan says...

On the other hand, apparently the US Government lost $11.2 billion on bailing out GM. They *spent* 50 billion bailing them out, the 11.2 billion is just how much dried up and blew away entirely.

Maybe if we'd have just let some of those corporate juggernauts fail, as should happen in a REAL free market, we'd actually have seen more progress. I'm thinking of, say, Tesla -- that got a $465 million loan from the gov. and paid it off in full 9 years early.

Not so long ago -- within my lifespan -- the government actually *broke up* giant corporate monopolies like Bell telecom. Now we can't throw money at them fast enough. I guess lobbying "works".

newtboy said:

I feel like they blew it, they should have charged them $35 million per infraction, both per model they delayed recalling and per death caused, which would be 13-35 deaths and I'm thinking about 15 models...which would be closer to a $ 1-1.5 billion fine. That would be a real fine.
Won't be buying a GM car any time soon.

Tell the FCC that they should reclassify broadband internet as a telecommunications (or "Common carrier") service. Right now broadband is regulated like TV or radio, which doesn't make sense.
This is a public comment for the public record...official government stuff... so you'll have to include your actual name and address.
