Zero Punctuation: XBLA Double Bill

Given how the Jewish population of Australia is virtually non-existent compared to the US, I think this is a bit like someone from Alaska making edgey "social commentary" on the racial anxiety between whites and blacks in the US.
EDIT: I know he was probably poking fun at antisemitism anxiety

I take it you missed the next screen that read:

Most definitely does not think Hitler was right

Meet The Niggars

They sure built some clever and biting social commentary into this show. I always wondered how much was overshadowed by the over-the-top hilarity.

Critiquing the social tendency for some black people to throw this word around but also consider it jarringly offensiveness when used on another's tongue (in the waiter scene) has been done to death in comedy. But if its a person's name, and just a word again,... well thats maybe a clever idea to start with. Using that to then examine the irrationality of racism (showing how stereotypes always describe more than the intended group), then recognize differences can exist in cultures separated by race (Dave's wife talking about a broken bottle and dice game, alluding to a starkly different life compared to one the title family leads) and to finally externalize the terrible hopelessness discrimination can instill with a serious line delivered as if in jest...

'Oh Lord, this racism is killing me inside!'

I guess maybe I missed the point, but I see this as a pseudo-serious social commentary. Obviously, it is meant to be funny, but the makers of the clip are also trying to make a statement about Japanese stereotypes.

The Real Reason Guns are Dangerous

This was really good on many levels, not least of which the great social commentary on self before others.

Very nice.

Oh... and I hate guns. (just wanted to start a flame war )

But more to the point, I've never seen it. Is it like a more socially acceptable version of Star Trek? I've always liked ST (at least TNG, Voyager and Enterprise - I never could get into TOS or DS9) but I've just never made the effort to watch BSG.

I'd say its more epic than any of the Star Treks, in that way its more like star wars, where they have a seemingly insurmountable task they must succeed against. All the characters are well developed and flawed, something I relish as too many times our hero's are personality less, 1 dimensional and/or stoic. There's a good bit of poignant social commentary, often on current events, I know that can turn some people off, but I like it. Plus I don't know many other shows that have made me switch between loving and hating a character so many times.

But anyways if you're a big sci-fi fan I highly recommend watching it. Its kind of hard to pick up mid-way through, but all the episodes and mini-series are on DVD, and probably available to rent at your local video store. Worth a try I say.

As for the original post and the rest proceeding it, I have taken to not wearing pants as none can contain the massive erection I have for the show's return, and I am very glad this is the last season because I'd hate for a good show to get ruined by being dragged out longer than is plausible for the given plot.

'The Office' - Jim schools Dwight about safety

Kerotan says...

The UK and the US versions are certainly different animals but I prefer the UK version, mainly because I can relate to the location setting, and I think possibly there is the certain element of hopelessness which is lost in translation in the US version, However, as I have already stated, this could be down to locational variation.

For those who don't find the office funny, really, its not meant to be laugh out loud funny, the real humour for the show comes from desperation and the sheer cring factor for the characters, and the social commentary that it makes about how much some office workers enjoy their lives.

There is a poem by the late great sir John Betjemen about slough, (the location of the original, for those that don't know), which the first few lines are:

"Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!"

That pretty much sums up why the location was set slough, just off a roundabout.

possibly the least memorable location ever.

Well- with that glowing endorsement - I'm moving it to the top of my "must see" list.

I don't know why you haven't seen it! I REALLY liked it. You must also see it because FOX wanted to destroy it by cutting off its budget because it didn't like how alot of things were portrayed in the film. I don't want to ruin it for you if you do go and see it, so I won't go into detail.

It is very funny, and kind of scary in another sense in that the caricatures of stupid that they portray in the movie such as the dumbing down of society, dumb people procreating more than intelligent people, entertainment, consumerism, etc. etc. seem to hit a note of truth for many. The ones that tell you it is really dumb and didn't like it I think may not get it, don't want to get it, or don't like this style of humor/social commentary. I don't know. I say, throw all caution to the wind and see it today because Issy gives it a thumbs-up!

Why have I not seen this movie yet? People keep telling me it's dumb. Then I see something like this - looks great to me.

How to avoid YouTube Censorship

bamdrew says...

One court's definition of 'parody and satire', from the above link;

"Parody or satire, as we understand it, is when one artist, for comic effect or social commentary, closely imitates the style of another artist and in so doing creates a new art work that makes ridiculous the style and expression of the original. Under our cases parody and satire are valued forms of criticism, encouraged because this sort of criticism itself fosters the creativity protected by the copyright law."
