Nikolas Plytas 2021 H2O

Upvote for the pickup truck!

Back country skiing in Colorado when I was growing up, down the hill, through the woods to a road, hitchhike back near the top, hike the last couple hundred meters, rinse, repeat.
Nine times out of 10 it was a pickup truck with snow in the back that was picking you up.

This was right before snowboarding was really a thing.

Tom Cruise may be the mad space pope, but you cannot question his commitment to his movies.

Being happy has nothing to do with money (or drugs)

ChaosEngine says...

Agreed. There have been numerous studies that show that happiness DOES increase with wealth.... up to a point.

Basically, struggling to buy food, pay rent, etc can make life miserable, but once you've got that covered more money won't necessarily make you happier.

In conclusion, money can't buy happiness but it can buy beer/mountain bikes/snowboards/holidays.

Not to be pedantic, but I know enough people who've claimed money has "nothing to do with happiness" literally that I have to counter it.

If you lack the money to keep you, or even more your children nourished or protected from the elements, you will discover there are many reasons for unhappiness that money can aid with. Money in no way grants or guarantees happiness, but there are a lot of things that make you miserable and sad that money can overcome, hungry and homeless children being the most obvious.

High-tech drones steal the show at the Winter Olympics

SFOGuy says...

Well, watching events (snowboarding and downhill)---it has surely been windy---would have scrambled a drone show good and proper...

The excuse I heard was they were afraid of bad weather so pretaped it in December.

When you and your mates go snow boarding for the first time

Snow Surfing (no bindings)

ChaosEngine says...

I can't help but feel he would have had a better time strapped in. Maybe the slope was too mellow, but it looked a bit tame to me. I just kept waiting for him to actually ride. Beautiful pow though.

As it was, that was some great footage of some very pedestrian snowboarding (trust me, I'm an expert on being a mediocre snowboarder ).

Honestly, I was more impressed with the drone avoiding the trees.

I saw this on Digg and did a complete double take at the end of his run when he stepped off the board. Had to rewatch the entire video knowing he wasn't strapped onto the board.

I snowboard and the glades are my favourite runs. On a cloud through the trees.

The Adorkable Misogyny of The Big Bang Theory

ChaosEngine says...

I'm a total self-confessed geek. I play video games, I like sci-fi, Star Wars AND Star Trek and I was even given a Lego Saturn V for my 40th by my friends who are also geeks. Hell, I work as a computer programmer.

I should find this show hilarious.

But I hate it.

Aside from the creepy undertones, it's a really tired stereotype. Yeah, I'm a geek and I like geek things, but I'm also a martial artist, a snowboarder and a mountain biker. And the same is true of all my "geek" friends. The idea that just because you like comic books means you're Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons hasn't been true for decades.

I literally don't know anyone like the characters on this show (and that's not "none of my friends are like this", that's "I don't think many people like this exist").

I never liked the show for exactly the reasons this video talks about. I could never articulate it as well it as it did.
Best I could say is it makes fun OF nerds and geeks, not WITH.

Reduce Crime AND Save Money: Treat Addiction ...

ChaosEngine says...

The problem is that people are short-sighted. We HATE spending money on something if it doesn't
a) measurably improve my life in some way or
b) fix an obvious problem.
I'm guilty of this too.

Nice meal out? great!
Holiday? Fantastic!
New bike/snowboard/toy? Awesome!

Even if something breaks, your brain is ok with spending money to fix it.

"Damnit, the element broke in the oven! Ahh well, better go get a replacement"

But getting my car serviced? Ugh, it's running fine!
Intellectually, I know that spending some money now will save me more in the long run, but I am still irrationally annoyed by it.

Drug treatment is the same. If you spend money on drug treatment, crime doesn't get committed. Because crimes aren't being committed people see drug treatment as a waste of money.

Prevention is always harder to see the benefits of than cure.

Plus, it's REALLY easy to blame drug-related crime on drug users. It's easy political points, whereas saying you want to spend tax payer dollars on potential criminals? Admit it, even if you're liberal, reading that sentence triggers some mild outrage in your lizard brain.
