For newts, even the .1% will go down before the rest of the world.
When I moved here, N California, I would see newts and frogs constantly, even a >1' long giant tiger salamander in my greenhouse. Now, 19 years later, I still see some frogs, but no newts or salamanders....hardly even any banana slugs.

I always figured I could just go full Morlock and live a nice cannibalistic lifestyle underground if I survive civilization's death throws.....but I'm probably old and soft enough that I won't.

I raised a pair in a 150 gal living terrarium, along with hundreds of breeding anoles. They both metamorphosed and lived for years looking like fat tiger salamanders before I gave the entire setup to a school.

I'm happy that I have run into bears here. It makes me feel like our area isn't as devoid of wildlife as many places are.
We have all those listed, plus skunks, possums, gophers, salamanders, elk, and yes, bears. Once I even saw a porcupine walking down the highway.
Twice I've had bears cross a river less than 50 ft from me while I was fishing just blocks from home, and before I built my fence they ravaged my apple trees every year with the elk and deer.
It's still a possibility that a bear is what paralyzed our puppy in our yard last June. We never found out what happened to her, and she's not talking, but she is up and walking.

But the invincibility point is nonsense. Most humans die from old age, so, yes, you wouldn't be invincible if you didn't die from aging, but that doesn't mean you'd still live a short or normal lifespan.

Also, WikiPedia says naked mole rats live up to 31 years. Is that when their tunnel cave-in is always scheduled by Naked-Mole-Rat-Jesus?

OK, granted. I did word that poorly, and you did address what I wrote.
What I meant was I have not seen a full explanation of the mechanism that is triggered by various (and seemingly sometimes by no) triggers...I have read that it's related to the air gulping that newts and salamanders do when in water, perhaps when transitioning from using gills to lungs, and I think they even said the signal comes from an odd part of the brain for breathing signals, but not why we might still hold on to that trait, or why various things might trigger that trait in mammals who aren't amphibious.
If I had to guess, I would guess it's some sort of anti-drowning trait that stops babies from inhaling too much water, but that's just a guess. I wonder if anyone has done a study/experiment.

He looked to be a healthy weight to me. I've seen footage of wild one's that looked even fatter, for instance most marine iguanas in the Galapagos that I've seen looked fatter, but he's certainly well fed and happy.
I did anoles too, in a 200 gal terrarium with tiger salamanders. Every now and then I gave one to the Savana monitor, I figured a lizard has everything in it that a growing lizard needs, so they should make a good supplement.

Be sure you wash your hands thoroughly before putting them in your mouth, the poison can stay on them for a while, and does effect mammals. It would probably just make you sick, but why take chances.
I've raised Newts and Salamanders since I was little. I was really psyched when I moved to the Bay area from Texas and found them everywhere.

Uhhh, I wasn't talking about a vote-garnering attempt by my self on this site-I watched the video on you tube because it popped-up in related vids, saw some really funny automobile adverts that WERE NOT made in America and low-and-behold, the prevailing theme in Europe is sex + cars = sell, and thought them clever-I never really even considered the thumbnail as a means to get votes here on Videosift.
