Safety glasses on motherfuckers, it's gonna be a bumpy decade.
Paris’ Traveling Knife Grinder
Wonderful slice of life video.
But I just spent $275 and a morning managing a metal working friend through an opthalmology appointment to extract metal shavings from their eye...so...Hope he gets back to using safety glasses.
Kid Physically Threatens Teacher For Not Rounding His Grade
I agree when someone endangers you or others. But I look at it as a first aid response. Not a challenge. Remove the danger from the victim. If that's not possible, remove the victim from the danger.
The second part is kind of iffy. No matter how confident you may be, and go beyond defusing a scene then proceed to administer punishment, you may be the one that fails prematurely and could end up with you, being the only defense, useless. Sometimes unexpected things happen and to keep a situation ongoing needlessly would be irresponsible. Don't fool yourself thinking you will be victorious. There are many things to defend yourself against without creating more.
Don't be a victim of your hand. It's really embarrassing.
When you want to pummel someone remember, SAFETY FIRST. Safety glasses and a hard hat.
Any time someone else touches you in anger or endangers you or those you are responsible for first.
Imo, when he pushed the teacher, he gave that teacher permission to take him out...and I'll go ahead and say this bullshit about responding with equal force is just that, bullshit. Once you start a fight by touching someone, you remove any right you had to complain that they're better at fighting and broke all your teeth out. Should've thought about that before putting your hands on someone else thinking you would come out victorious.
Arnaldo Costa, Stone Mason Extraordinaire
I was going to mention safety glasses but after that long, still has both eyes, I guess he's earned the right to go without.
Volkswagen's new emissions test
Good thing he wore his safety glasses
Kid Accidentally Shoots Computer Screen
I think every kid needs to go through something like that.
I used to shoot pest rabbits around our house (in the country, far from any neighbors) with a BB rifle. Went through safety training, was always very careful, etc. etc.
One day I saw a rabbit hiding under a row of trees between myself and the back side of my house. I never shot towards the house / people / whatever, always away from. But, the rabbit was there. I could have walked around the trees, but the rabbit probably wouldn't have been visible from the other side. Plus, the land sloped up so there was a bit of a hill/grade between me and the house, not to mention the thick tree branches and underbrush. BBs almost never went clean through a rabbit, they'd get lodged in the body.
So, I rationalized all that. Five pumps instead of ten, make sure I hit the rabbit so the BB doesn't go through, plus I'm aiming down into the ground so even if I miss the BB will probably lodge in the ground or hit a tree or brush. Should be fine. Do it.
I pull the trigger, rabbit runs away, and I hear a really loud "thump". The BB had ricocheted off the ground and hit right in the dead center of a huge sliding glass door on the back of the house. Safety glass, so I saw it spread out in little spiderweb patterns from the impact point in the center over the course of about 30 seconds or so, and then all fall into a pile of glass bits.
So of course I run to my dad and said "no, I was totally aiming *away* from the house -- must have had a really unlucky ricochet off of the flagpole or something!" He just smiled and said "really?" and then explained that I'd be doing chores and mowing the lawn to help pay to replace the glass door -- which ended up being about $800.
But you can bet your ass that I never aimed even remotely in the direction of a house, car, or anything else that I didn't want to shoot after that...
Her worst day at work
safety glass most likely. it would be hard to get cuts on that.
Interesting that the security camera records sound...
Hope she got out of that with as few cuts as possible.
Beautiful Tornado Bears Down On A Trailer Park
Thanks Dolbs, that's good to know even if I will almost certainly never encounter a tornado. So, windows rolled up then. After further thought, I think the truck probably is the best idea in this scenario. Belted in and covered with a heavy blanket to protect you from flying glass should the windows break (and it's safety glass anyways) or other small debris, would be the way to go, or just curled up in a ball against the firewall if that's the only option. In the truck, you're insulated from lighting strikes or downed high tension lines, and it would provide reasonable protection from small whirling debris. You also have the mobility option should that need arise.
Granted, the truck could get hit by large missiles such as tree trunks, other cars, fat old ladies, cranes or other heavy machinery, or indeed itself be lofted hundreds of feet into the air. If any of that sort of thing happens, though, you were screwed anyways.
So, when it comes to this, I'm not really sure this is EIA in the truest sense. Given the (apparently) 30 seconds they had to plan, I think they made a reasonable choice among the options available to them. After all, it's definitely a situation where an okay plan now is better than a brilliant plan in five minutes. And yes, they probably should have come up with a plan as soon as they realized they were moving to a trailer park in ND, so a bit of EIA there. At least they kept on top of their priorities and realized the very first item of business was to film it happening, and I commend their presence of mind to hold the phone properly even in such a life-and-death situation.
Of course, since we're betting on the tornado not scoring a direct hit anyways. It could be that under a bed or in a closet in the trailer might have been just as well (losing the mobility, of course). Maybe having a trailer collapse on you is bad.
I dont' know why I find this scenario so fascintating to dissect.

Not so. The guy in the black shirt has safety glass on his head. On top of his head. You know, where a hard hat normally goes. Perfectly safe.

As someone who has spent way to many days as a patient in eye hospitals (congenital retina issues)---it's a little unnerving to see him without the side guards...
It really is not until you get your eye messed up you realize that proper PPE while working is in YOUR best interest.
I was in thick bush while quad logging without my safety glass' on when the willow tree I was running over threw branches at my face and scaped my scalia ( eye wept for 30 hours and I couldnt open it for a day) that I realized, "DAMN ! I NEED MY EYES ! "
Turning a Railroad Spike Into An Awesome Knife
Respect the skills, but it's a little terrifying to watch him banging away at a metal object with another metal object that's red hot and shedding scale---without any safety glasses.
See the aftermath of that once when bad things happened.
Not pretty.
