Will Smith smacks Chris Rock on stage at Oscars Uncensored

bremnet says...

Love the Academy's statement: "The Academy does not condone violence of any form", and yet they just did. Here's your trophy, congratulations. Pretty gutless. Can't wait for the first angry dad punching out a ref or umpire at his kid's game, and uses the Will Smith defense... "It was a bad joke so I broke his jaw". What an excellent role model.

Denzel Washington speaks out: Where are the Fathers

isomers says...

Empower men to be fathers to their sons and daughters -- or gift a boy without a father your positive presence and guidance -- or gift him the book Pocket Guide for Young Men Without Fathers if there is no positive male role model in his life.

Fleetwood Mac Albatross 1969.10.09 Pop & Blues Festival '69

vil says...

Sad.

So first I thought this was a really short video.

Then I googled and found out how little video material from that era exists.

I found a great clip of Oh Well, live, in the middle of that.

Then I googled that Danny Kirwan died two years ago.

Only then I noticed Peter Green died.

And then I "remembered" the lick from Oh Well as the Formula 1 intro from before The Chain.

Then I Googled it.

Then I realized that it wasnt.

Then I remembered a conversation I had with someone 40 years ago who heard Oh Well and said "this is the music from F1" and I explained that no, that is another song by the same band but its not the same band anymore.

Somehow what gets stuck in your head becomes potato mash at some point. Or its just me.

It was itself the theme to "25 years of rock" a few years later.

Peter gave everything away because of drug induced mental problems, not that much of a good role model. At least he made it out of the 70s alive.

Thanks for your concern, I can feel it and much appreciated.

Those church goers doesn't dictate me, I'm more like one of those that love to call out on any BS hypocrisy shit-disturber in the church. Why? Mainly because I don't really care about going to heaven and belong to a religion organization. But I do look up to Jesus as a great philosopher/role model. Actually, to be honest, the bigger role model in the Bible to me is Paul.

So far, there are many good people in my church that are genuinely involved to the community at large (not just within the church), those I would
sincerely call friends and partners, a vast majority are the regular church goers - there for their own purpose (like to belong to a community, trying to figure things out), and some bad apples (the alt-right type in the USA).

I'm just glad I'm a Canadian, where Christians doesn't play the political game as hard-core (read: bat-shit crazy) as in the States. Pretty European, clearer separation of religion and state.

If one day my church is too much for me (i.e. I see a negative value in the community), I'm more than happy to go.

I hope people like you on Videosift can keep me grounded. This community is pretty unique to me.

Trump has been in office for less than a month ans has yet to do anything for blacks. YEA Fuck Donald Trump.

That being said these great community leaders are gathering to promote positive role models that their youth can look up and emulate. To be the next MLK, Jackson, Sharpton Morgan Freeman, Will Smith, Sidney Potier 50 cent, Don king, JC Watts, Clarence Thomas, Thomas Sowell, ........ YEA Fuck Donald Trump.

Democrat policies have done more harm to the black community than another issue. Political slavery.

Good Role Model Teaching Kids to Work Through Emotional Pain

transmorpher says...

Good role model? More like psychological abuse from a jedi wannabe.

What's the point of this test? To see if the kid can break a board the wrong way?

How about he teaches the kid the correct punching technique first, so that the kid won't break his hand.

Punching has got nothing to do with pain or strength, and all about technique.

Hillary Clinton Feels Sorry For Ignorant Young People

newtboy says...

I would actually say that's what makes a personally successful politician, but not a professionally successful one, and as far from a perfect one as it's possible to be.
I think we need both election reform and finance reform to make a difference. Election reform to be able to actually hold politicians accountable to their voters at least once every few years, and finance reform to make them want to work for the voters rather than the donors.

A perfect politician would be fair minded, not greedy, not ego driven, not 'tribal', honest, willing to sacrifice for the greater good, thoughtful, consistent but willing to change in the face of new information, moral (not the kind of morality where you force your specific morals on others, but the kind of morality where you can be a role model for them), and still influential and successful at not only finding solutions to problems that are at least palatable to all, but also successful at getting them implemented. I'm not sure I've ever seen one of those...but as I see it, Sanders checks more boxes than most, far more than any other candidate.

Mordhaus said:

My biggest issue is that she is the consummate politician. She will lie, cheat, steal, buy, borrow, and beg for anything and everything she needs to get into power.

Now you can say that is what a perfect politician is supposed to do and you would technically be correct. The problem is that career politicians don't care about voters and they end up owing a lot of rich private interests favors.

Sadly, until we change the system to allow the people to truly pick who we want via a popular vote, we will be stuck with politicians. People who actually give a damn will never make it past the system to the highest levels.

Bill Burr on First Ladies

bareboards2 says...

Here's the deal. Louis CK can say the horrible things but they are to their bones true.

This isn't true. It presumes that the spouses aren't partial partners in the journey, working hard, learning the issues. Being role models.

Burr is stuffing these women into the tiny box of "spouse" as if that defines them utterly.

It has been true of some spouses.

But clearly not Hilary and clearly not Michelle Obama. And it wouldn't be true of Bill Clinton.

It's funnier when it is bone deep true. Then you can say "sexist" and "outrageous" things and they make you laugh in recognition.

No recognition from me here.

GPD "Basketball Cop" returned as promised, With Shaq

Esoog says...

I honestly believe encounters like this can change these kid's lives. Its something they will never forget. And not just with Shaq. These officers are great role models.

Colbert interviews Anita Sarkeesian

Asmo says...

Yes, she's great at pointing that out.

What's the solution?

Quota's of protagonists sex? Replacing "damsel" with "prince" in distress? Getting rid of chainmail bikinis?

Oh, and how do we propagate that to the entire entertainment industry?

There is nothing wrong with playing a prince and rescuing a princess. There is nothing wrong with the princess being helpless. There is nothing wrong with Femmeshep kicking the shit out of the reapers and saving every being in the known universe, one of the most badass female protagonists around. More female protagonists = great, bring it on, but that's no reason to throw out a trope as old as time (incidentally, a trope enjoyed by a great many women who like to watch sappy romances where the charming fellow rescues the woman from her crappy life...).

Her series predicates on the concept that players are too fucking dumb to understand the difference between real life and the game. That if you play Duke Nukem, you'll walk around slapping girls tits and saying the most inappropriate things you can think of.

It's exactly the same tripe that Jack Thompson was peddling back in the day, games change how you think. And, for most people (ie. the mentally stable...), it was wrong then and it's wrong now. Your upbringing and parental guidance, and the relationship your male role models have with women, are far more likely to determine whether or not a man is likely to be sexist/misogynist than a few games with scantily clad girls needing a big strong man to save them... Society has changed to become more accepting of race, creed, sexual orientation and, of course, women, and it will continue to become so even if the old trope of the princess is in another castle hangs around. It may take generations before inequality dies out, if it ever does. It's not something you can fix by complaining about games.

SDGundamX said:

Her videos don't make the argument that games cause violence against women or anyone else. She analyzed the roles of women in games and found trends in how they were portrayed. These were not flattering portrayals (for example the "Damsel in Distress" portrayal) and male characters were not often treated in the same way in games. She's pointing out how off-putting that can be to potential and actual female gamers and recommending women be portrayed in a more realistic manner. She's also pointing out how games are reinforcing the sexist and misogynistic messages that already exist in society. I don't think she is claiming media is the root cause of either sexism or misogyny.

Spider-Woman's Big Ass Is A Big Deal - Maddox

T-Barlow says...

Besides, objectification isn't even the problem, the real problem that liberals ignore is DEHUMANIZATOIN. Spider-woman is far from dehumanized. She's a very complex character, you learn all about her. You learn her favorite color, he dreams, her interested, her fears. You learn of her needs, the things she hates.

Through pin-ups you learn all about her sexuality as well. It is not the artist or the fan that thinks of spiderwoman as something dirty or subhuman for expressing her sexuality but the critics that reduce her to an object. In truth they do this not to defend spiderwoman, but to dehumanize her fans. They are told they are subhuman beasts for having sexual thoughts. That they are monsters for having interested in a female as anything other than a role model. It's total and complete hyporacy. The fans of spiderwoman view spiderwoman as nothing less than a complete human being, the fans themselves are reduced to nothing more than animals. Once the object is reduced to a level below humanity, any level of decadent violence can be done to them by the feminist, and that's the point.

Speaking Out On Street Harassment

bareboards2 says...

@milkman
Thanks for your great deal of thought on this subject.

However, I have ZERO regret over not "socking the creep."

It was inappropriate under those circumstances to hit this tiny guy. I was much bigger than him and I could have really hurt him. His assault on me was psychological more than physical -- my first response was to laugh! He didn't hurt me physically, clearly wasn't assaulting any more, and I was going to attack him?

Excuse me, but that seems a very male response to a situation. I don't see a single woman in this comment stream writing that I should have slugged or kneed him. Every comment about physically striking him came from men -- correct me if I am wrong, I might have the gender of some posters incorrect.

I am very clear, after thinking about this for a long time, that my single regret is that I didn't call him out verbally. It was my first regret, and I struggled to get to the place where I wasn't ashamed of my lack of action in not calling him out. I got myself out safely and that was the most important thing that had to happen. I did that. I was successful in protecting myself. I won.

But I learned from this -- if it happens again, because of this experience, I am prepared next time to SHAME THE HOLY HELL OUT OF HIM.

That is, IF I can do it safely. My first priority will always be to protect myself.

So if I do not feel threatened physically, I will call the perv out in such a way as to stay safe and embarrass the hell out of him. I do so want to "strike a blow" on behalf of all girls and women who have to suffer this shite, and maybe be a role model for any women and girls who happen to be watching.

If I feel threatened with additional physical assaults, I WILL use my training to protect myself -- which starts with body language and a strong NO, and physical strikes if necessary.

Here's a little factoid for you -- 78% of assaults on women are by single unarmed assailants. As we were taught in class, they are looking for a victim, not a fight. Strong body language, strong use of voice -- that is often all that is needed to protect yourself. Assholes will run away when you show you are willing to stand up for yourself.

No need to hit anyone, except with your chi.
