How Star Wars The Last Jedi Should Have Ended

notarobot says...

I think you misunderstand my opinion of TLJ here.

Had this video been used to build a script for TLJ, it would have been better than TLJ because ANYTHING would have been better.

As evidence, we can compare TLJ to a two-hour video of a garbage fire, and indeed, the garbage fire would have had better writing.

The movie was terrible.

If they were going to have vaudevillian humour in the opening scenes with Poe prank-calling Hux---while dozens of star destroyers with hundreds (thousands?) of fighters sit there idle----they may as well have gone full 'Snakes on a Plane' B-movie fan service and let Ackbar do the same thing with an "it's a trap" gag. But that wouldn't do, because that would involve some kind of consistency. And one thing I can't stand is scripts and characters in stories that contradict their own being.

e.g. Luke "I see good in the most evil villain of movie history" Skywalker considering killing his own nephew, because maybe he's too far gone. Darth Vader wasn't too far gone, but somehow the son of Leia and Han was? See how that kinda goes against Luke's character? There are a million ways they could have written the fall of Ben Solo into the dark side that didn't involve violating the essence of existing characters.

A garbage fire wouldn't have done that. A garbage fire would have known better.

TLJ was terrible movie that just happened to have the massive budget for some cool special-effects scenes and some A-list actors wasted on an awful script with a thin, scattered plot.

Now maybe TLJ is your favourite movie, and if so, whatevs. We just have different taste I guess. I'm not going to get into a flame war over a garbage-fire.

No, it wouldn’t. That’s the joke here. It’s pointing out how cliched and boring that would have been.

Don’t get me wrong, TLJ had its problems, but the obvious fan boy criticisms (Holdo, Luke, etc) are not the right ones.

Granted, this is all subjective.

Kid Gets Custom Trump Shirt Made Gets Special Message

newtboy says...

Hilarious. Maybe they should have tried to not giggle like naughty teenagers making a prank call if they want to be taken seriously.
First, they did make the shirt he asked for, a quality one it seemed, just with a bonus secret message.
Second, Trump supporters are the same people who advocate the refusal of service for people who offend their religious (or political) sensibilities, so what's his problem? He was probably hoping they would refuse him service so he could use the video as proof that "liberals" are totally hypocritical and refuse service to those they dislike but vilify "conservatives" for the same thing, but got something unexpected instead.

It's now pretty clear that initially they did this looking for and expecting a negative reaction they could exploit somehow, then pressed the point when they got one, thinking they 'got them' and now he can be the conservative hero of the week.

To be fair though, what response does one expect when one goes into a business in a firmly red state like Alabama or Mississippi, and an even more firmly Republican city, and then go to a world famously Republican neighborhood in that city, enter a store with a Trump sign in the window and ask them to make you a HILLARY T-shirt? I would bet $10 it involves threats of violence if not actual violence and firearms, not a quality shirt with a 'secret' message inside.

Given how weird and neutral in tone his video is, I wouldn't be stunned if he knows exactly how much positive attention he gave them and if it was entirely planned.

What Happens To The Few Good Cops

newtboy says...

I'm talking about the $2500 per inappropriate accessing of her information (which they did over 200 times). Since it's against department rules/policy, they should make the officer that does the action pay the fine personally instead of the way it's set up where the department pays for the officer's crime(s).
It seems like she's somehow not allowed to sue the department or officers for harassment or the others crimes, at least she's not doing that. (often, both the department and officer are legally shielded from responsibility for illegal actions) As I understood, the entire $500000 is ONLY about the accessing her license, and nothing is being done about the officers harassing, stalking, prank calling, threatening, intimidating, or otherwise behaving badly...nothing at all was mentioned in the article about ANY other charges...or really any charges at all for the intimidation. The only repercussion was TO HER, being forcibly moved and taken off street duty (demoted?). WTF?!?
If I ran the department, all 88 of those cops would be fired AND personally sued. It's terribly disappointing that they all seem to get off scott free, and she's still in reasonable fear for her life from the thugs in blue. If that's how they treat their own, how do these officers treat the public, certainly worse.

Lawdeedaw said:

Um...they can be sued individually in civil court...but it is more molla to sue an agency so most people go the greed-for-need approach. I am not taking sides here newtboy, just pointing out that it is possible as long as the right focus is applied.

We need one of those Flash sound boards from this video (and the last one they referenced). Anyone remember those Arnold prank calls? These sound bites would top those for sure.

Fuck yes! I heard this on the radio like 2 months ago and never got his name or anything. I think this story is fucking hilarious, it's always something I've wanted to do (prank call like that not stand up... though stand up would be fun too) I would just never be able to keep up the act within 3 sentences.

Australian DJ's Break Silence On Royal Prank Call Suicide.

ChaosEngine says...

Are you trying to be funny?

She killed herself. That in and of itself is pretty much the definition of someone who is not mentally sound.

The fact that a prank call pushed her over the edge only adds to that. Plenty of people have suffered much worse tragedies in their lives and recovered from it.

I'm not trying to belittle her. I'm just sorry she didn't get the help she so clearly needed.

I think prank calls are stupid and people who do them are morons. I'm angry because of the outcome, which I'll admit the prankers could never predict. I'll still say, that the only outcome they could get would be bad, so why do that? There's no "awesome, I succeeded" in it, no good outcome.

Their joke was bad and they should feel bad.

What's to be gained from any prank call? It's only because the nurse killed herself that people's emotions are running high (not to make light of her death). If that never happened, would you still describe them as "fucking morons" (to me sounds like there's a bit of anger behind the statement) or simply think "that was stupid and unfunny" and not give it a second thought?

This really shows how the royal family are treated as a protected species out of reach of public criticism or ridicule, & in some respects are also in many Australian media circles. i think that if this story shows anything it is the pressure placed upon citizens such as the nurse who would go on to take her own life to revere dutchesses, dukes, kings etc. as above the mere commoner, if entitlement wasn't placed on this birth then there would've been no prank call & the woman would not have felt as though she made a national mistake by not screening a simple phone call.

When a child's every move is scrutinised in utero and seen as of national importance, then how much has the media really changed since the time of Diana?.

Well to a large extent I agree with you. You shouldn't not do something for fear of maybe someone getting their feelings hurt or whatever, that's like the Chilling Effect, but I would argue that in this particular instance there was nothing to be gained from it other than misery. What were they really hoping for? They're fucking morons is what they are.

EvilDeathBee says...

My point is that the possibility someone would get fired to be on the receiving end of a prank is so utterly remote it borders on absurdity and that not doing it for that single reason is just as absurd.

Same as if you spoke up for receiving the wrong order. The chance someone could fired over it is pretty damn remote, but it does exist. You can't go through life constantly second guessing all the little things you do when in all good judgement would lead to nothing bad happening, when there is an unpredictable chance, something bad MAY happen.

I think most prank calling is stupid, but almost always utterly harmless, as this prank would have been if they hadn't gotten the unfortunate circumstance of contacting someone with it seems, some serious emotion issues and if the story hadn't gotten the ludicrous amount of attention that it didn't warrant

gwiz665 said:

But isn't that just a bad idea in general?

If it fails, then it's just a boring segment.

If it succeeds it likely gets someone fired and whatever else follows.

Seems like a lose/lose to me.

Nurse who fell for Kate Middleton prank is dead

Yogi says...

I like to think of most of my posts as a stand up routine. Me sputtering and spitting with anger about something that just doesn't fucking matter. All for a bit of fun. Sadly you can't see me acting this out, but goddammit I can't do everything! Use your Fucking imaginations!!!

Also I learned this women left behind a husband and two kids, there must've been something else to this. Killing yourself and leaving family behind because of a prank call, I can't understand that.

chingalera said:

In Yogi's defense (and yeah, he does tend to wax a bit pissed-off in a wake of seemingly reasonable responses to certain issues) I have a question for ye who would offer similar reactionary quips in the face of alternative notions to current events of dubious import: Does confidence and self-assertion simply scream, "troll" to certain children wet-nursed on internet?

If a differing opinion voiced colorfully and with confidence irks some so into simply shutting down processes and creating convenient boxes, categories and labels, well....I suppose I need to move under a fucking bridge and start exacting tolls from passers-by and, NONE SHALL PASS UNTIL WE ALLLL GET OUR COINS!

Fuck the Royals, and Fuck Britain with her nose up their asses for continuing to live the illusion-It's 2012 people, start placing the blame with the cunts that made the world a ticking IED- They're the mega-ultra-stupid rich, bitch!
What's worse, is they turned all of you into tiny little micro-versions of themselves...the real joke is, we're the joke.

If I was the "victim" of a prank call I really don't think I would top myself.
Depression and suicide are complex matters and people linking these events (as did the Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing) are making a huge assumption.
