Amazing New Japanese Hanabi Fireworks

newtboy says...

Ok, maybe slightly, but certainly not as it was presented here.

Even a static filter is CGI…it’s a computer (phone) filter generating an image. It’s exactly what I think of when I think of “effects” for digital photography or videos….what does it mean to you? Since it’s “computer” drawn moving images, it’s animation, no?

Why? Art.
Why would Van Gogh paint swirling stars in “starry night”?
Why would Cyriak dismember a million digital sheep to reform them into nightmare creatures?

the original title is misleading and this isn't "CGI" or "FX" or animation in any meaningful way. it's a static filter. all that adds up to a very strange thing to post. i'm just confused why anyone would make this.

Around Cape Horn (1929)

BSR says...

Wow! That's something you gotta be born into. The closest I've come to being a seaman was working on a scallop boat in Cape Canaveral. That was an new experience for me. I understand that boat now lays about 30 miles out from Daytona beach at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. I guess I shouldn't have plugged that hole with bubble gum before I left.

Excellent narration and photography. I thought the narrator's voice sounded just a little bit like Norm McDonald though.

How Does Film ACTUALLY Work? - Smarter Every Day 258

BSR says...

I've never processed color film but I've had years of processing Black and White film and prints. My father and I built a darkroom in the basement of our house.

Dad was a historian and published 5 books with photographs copied from old postcards he collected.

He would go back to the same spot where a postcard was photographed to make a Then & Now tour.

Needless to say I've spent much of my life in the darkroom. B/W photography isn't sensitive to red light so it's not completely dark as it is with color film.

Also spent many years doing offset printing from small presses to large newspaper presses. The process is much the same.

A video about PETA

Jinx says...

It was a chimpanzee, not a monkey, and the chimp took a selfie itself with the photographers camera.

Unless there is some other monkey/photography-based copyright claim that I am unaware of.

I know. I'm a pedant.

The Deadly Logistics of Climbing Everest

BSR says...

WOW! Nice. I'm impressed with your climb and photography. When you tell people you got high, you meant it.

I got up to 13,550 ft. at Annapurna base camp. I woke up after being there overnight with altitude sickness which was the most horrible thing. Once i got down a couple thousand feet the illness went away. Here is a pic i took from base camp of Annapurna https://imgur.com/aYvUR2S

(edit) and since i'm sharing here are a few pics i took while trekking in Nepal https://imgur.com/a/LOsiy

Why So Many Spacecraft Reaction Wheels Failed

BSR says...

Major photography oversight. Always know your background. Many times you will see people with trees, poles and even the Washington Monument growing out of their heads.

This guy looks like he has a feather sticking out.

Otherwise, a very interesting vid. [thumbs up emoji here]

On occasion I've played around with "reaction wheels" using a cool 2D physics program called Algodoo that is free for download. Check it out below.

Alive - Beautiful motion time lapse in Canadian wilderness

ChaosEngine jokingly says...

Dear Canada,
Can you leave off the stunningly beautiful natural wilderness thing for a bit? That's our gig.

Sincerely,
NZ

Seriously though, that was very very pretty. Excellent photography too.
My friends and I often joke that NZ is the Canada of Australia (smaller population, prettier and smarter people ). So I will officially allow Canada to call itself the NZ of North America. You're welcome, Canada.

Also, I am going to Canada.

The poor man's selfie drone

newtboy says...

Great idea, but you can buy a nerf vortex for $10, hollow it out, and put your gopro in it.
These guys have obviously practiced their throws to be able to keep it pointed in the right direction and not spin. They did far better than I thought they would.
