The Little Mermaid 2017 - Official Trailer

poolcleaner says...

You're right but at the same time I have quite enjoyed television movies and low budget films with that special someone in the cast. For example, I thought the Amityville Horror with Patty Duke (the 4th movie, I believe) was pretty interesting, and not even despite its low budget, because of it.

Besides you're not 100% correct about how the single star drains the pool of resources. Oftentimes these stars act as investment magnets, so people are more willing to help produce the film if it has a star such as Shirley MacClaine. Look at Reservoir Dogs -- did Harvey Keitel detract or attract from the success of the film, and the long term successes of Quentin Tarrantino, Steve Buscemi, Tim Roth and Chris Penn? Like international acclaim -- for a low budget flick from a nobody.

I'm always very curious about these types of films. It requires, for me, an almost scientific, socioeconomic evaluation of the film making process to fully appreciate, or just a curiosity of film and social interactions portrayed in film and around film sets and the bureaucracy of generating the funds and jerryrigging devices to fulfill smaller budget scenarios which drive such a project as this to fruition.

I'm very interested in seeing this movie because it looks like it could actually be good and not just a thing to pan because of the limitations.

I had a film professor who wrote a couple Jean Claude Van Damme direct to DVD movies and his view of film projects was that they are nearly impossible to complete objectives that require self sacrifice and a warrior spirit to fully realize.

Films remind me of how different societies growths are based upon resource allocation, so some societies become empires and some remain scattered tribes and disparate families. Same as in film; this is like a missing link. Strange and curious to behold but human.

Besides, you don't give a fuck about mermaid movies. This is being made for kids that like mermaids lol -- I grew up watching Disney's Little Mermaid, had every word of the film memorized, but I'm certain it didn't matter that it had a better staff and bigger budget because I also had a made for tv dinosaur movie's rap song memorized and written down in phonetic child sound language.

This looks... absolutely terrible. And with that special someone in the cast, I think we all know where the majority of the budget went to.

Swedish Chemist's Shop joke

ulysses1904 says...

The joke is that phonetically "c'est la vie" in Spanish sounds like "I know I saw it" and "yo también" = "me too"

A Frenchman and a Latino are walking down the sidewalk during a windy day. A woman in a skirt is walking towards them and a gust of wind blows her skirt up to reveal she is wearing no undergarments. She covers herself and blushes. As she passes them the Frenchman shrugs and says to her "C'est la vie".
To which the Latino replies "¡Yo también!"
jajajajajaja

Is This The End Of Jeb!?

Jeb Bush is like PIN number...redundant.
John Ellis Bush...Bush

I liked his new one...iJEB! (or phonetically, yeb) He's hoping we'll give him a yob.

The Linguistics of African American Vernacular English

TheFreak says...

It's funny, I just spoke to a friend about his doctoral thesis where he records an American Indian language. He said in his thesis he doesn't use IPA because it's too confusing even for academics. I think he said he modified some simplified phonetic alphabet and used a key...but I was on my third IPA myself so...whatever.

Ioan Gruffudd's Very Odd Name

worthwords says...

Welsh is a complete phonetic language - the digraphs LL, Dd, Ch, etc follow predicable pronunciation as opposed to english with often requires a-priory knowledge about pronunciation.

'Ll' is a single letter in welsh so it would be wrong to read it as related to the english 'L' which seems to be why english speaks sound so retarded trying to say 'Llanelli' or 'machynlleth'

Disclaimer : welsh is my native language and I have met Ioan Gryffyth at various cultural events.

Ex Machina Trailer

artician says...

Automata bothered me that they had their own "Rules of Robotics", but felt like trimming those back to only 2, leaving even wider loopholes for creative drama, but still following it to the same conclusion.
I liked The Machine a bit better because instead of a fictional portrayal on AI finding a way through it's man-made cage, it was about experimenting with an AI that had no cage and seeing what self-discovery brought it.
Ultimately both those films just devolved into meaningless action in the end. I hope this one doesn't. Otherwise the premise looks almost identical to The Machine, right down to the robots name (Eva/Ava, same phonetics).

Lots of interesting science fiction out the last couple years though. Lots seem to be dealing with our infatuation of deconstructing our physical bodies to explore what's left. Between this film, The Machine, Robocop, The Signal, and I'm sure at least one other I'm leaving out, they all have viscerally imagined portrayals of human figures with as little recognizable human traits as possible.

One last thing,
I've been thinking about other word pairings that are very similar in phonetic pronunciation, spelling, and meaning. I came up with a few, but, for an example, consider the following:

Think about the difference between the words "sit" and "set"
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/sit
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/set

I can set something on a table.
Or
I can sit something on a table.

But!

If I were to say
"I sit my cactus on the table."
It sounds awkward, less natural compared to:
"I set my cactus on the table."
I assume this is because "sitting" usually refers to a person or other conscious something.

I can say
"I set my son on the table."
OR
"I sit my son on the table."
and have them be allllllllllllmost interchangeable.

Still, the difference remains. The subtle difference in meaning requires that the words differ, expanding and exacting our communication.

If Jinx really meant to say that there was a pool of human saliva that the comments were drowning in, he should have used a verb phrase in his comment like this:
"the comments are already drowning in a sea of dribbling"

10 Year Old Talking Backwards Fluently

Grimm says...

The really cool thing about this is that he is also getting the reverse phonetics pretty close. If you just typed out a sentence and then read it phonetically and then played it back in reverse it wouldn't sound right.

I don't know if I made sense....in other words if you say the word "wolley" and play it backwards it won't sound like you said "yellow"

Sandra Bullock Rapping - The Jonathan Ross Show

poolcleaner says...

I don't remember the next part either, Sandra. But when I was in 7th grade I did... I also learned the Dinosaur rap that was at the end of this lame-ass Disney Channel movie about going back in time and being stranded Land of Lost style.

Oh wait, was that Land of the Lost? I don't recall, but it was dumb and I learned the rap phonetically rather than actually knowing the words. I wrote it down and it made NO SENSE, but I rapped it anyway. Sort of like learning a Beck song -- Soooooyyyy own a bend a door. lolz

LOL I checked the pronunciation given on google translate and I can see how you got your variation. A better phonetic version would be sosyed but then whenever I try to speak to a Russian person I get a lot of giggles.

You wanna give me that in Cyrillic because your phonetic variation makes no sense to me.

What I'm wondering is when does the Ruskie fire brigade get to call out this service? Is it reserved for former party members and the criminal elite or are Uri and Magda *Cysiet entitled to the air-tanker service?
