I always used to think that this was how Americans finished phone conversations. And that they never paid cab drivers either.
I was shocked at first to see they never say goodbye or anything polite at the end of a phone call, but than I imagined that they are really busy people, after 25 years I still don't have a reasonable answer to this.
More likely to be part of a psychological project ...getting older didn't really helped me.

Up voted for the Die Hard Bonnie Bedelia bit. Whenever I'm watching that one I always continue talking as the house keeper Paulina as she's slowly and rudely and late 80's-ly being hung up on. "Oh Thank you Mrs Hol-CLICK."

I am 100% certain that the people who complain about cell phone etiquette are not as well-versed in it as they think and most certainly do uncouth things with them.
