Gangs & Glassblowing in Tacoma - BBC News

Upvote for my hometown!

This place is a hidden gem, not just in the Pacific Northwest, but in all of America. We have done a ton to turn this place around in to an amazing city! I'm very proud to be a part of it.

And they're not wrong, the glassblowing and artists here are very much an integral part of who we are here.

It is true that native Americans are as diverse as white Americans in their opinions. There are many many reservations here in the Pacific Northwest. One of the reasons it took so long to finally abandon "Redskins" in our high school is that there were local tribe members who didn't have a problem with it.

If the native tribes weren't monolithic in their response, why should the white people abandon their "heritage"?

I do wonder if we can hear the final sentence of this differently. It may be that some natives are fine with their local high school mascot, for the same reason our local high was -- it is tradition.

But what the vid says is -- we don't call OURSELVES that. And that may be a monolithic truth.

Probably not, though. Humans can be pesky to paint as black or white ... or red.

Enough native Americans are pissed about it. We don't need 100% agreement.

When I was driving across a reservation out west, the Indian high school sports team was called the Redskins, so...nice sentiment, but BS.

I "got" it, except not in exactly the way you meant. Here's how I qualified:

1. I'm the right age -- 1981. *edit* ahh, the commercial is from 1981. So nope, I probably wasn't comprehending TV beer commercials just yet.
2. Nope, Kansas.
3. Nope.
4. While watching the video, I remembered my college Geology 101 "Rocks for Jocks" class and learning abouthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artesian_aquifer>artesian aquifers. Kansas has conditions that are good for those in some locations due to water in our local aquifer system flowing down from the Rockies (all subterranean, but still down). I'm betting that isn't what you were referring to?
5. Is the joke that Olympia Brewing used an artesian well, and he plays it like "Artesian" sounds like a nationality or ethnic group? Or is it a Pacific Northwest region/group? Wikipedia disambiguation refers to an Artesian South Dakota, but I don't think that's it.

Anyway, I've honestly enjoyed this little snipe hunt I embarked on due to your comment mentioning "artesian" which was my first thought when watching the video, but now I'm coming up empty trying to nail down your actual reference (and therefore the reference of the video you linked also). But it's been fun!

To "get" this reference, you will need:
1. to be old, like me (beer, circa 1981),
2. to be from the Pacific Northwest,
3. to know who Richard Farnsworth is,
4. to know what an Artesian is,
5. this link: http://videosift.com/video/Artesian-Gardener

No. Sweeping a prejudice under the rug has never done anything to eliminate it. As we all have prejudices (and I'm assuming nobody here will deny it as you're all an intelligent bunch), what could be wrong with admitting one and trying to get rid of it?

I'm Canadian and I acknowledge that I too associate her particular accent with lack of intelligence. If someone is saying something and trying to make it clear they think it is an ignorant point of view, they might put on her accent. I and everyone else understands that they're trying to appear ignorant. It's a very common stereotype.

So it's me, and @spoco2, and just about all English speakers, at least in Canada and northern parts of America, who associate this accent (rightly or wrongly) with lack of intelligence.

Now, once you have identified your prejudice, a thinking person (unlike the idiot in this video) will try and divest themselves of their prejudice by actively seeking counterexamples to their prejudice. And if you're already connected to a community with massive exposure to internet videos, that's the obvious place to start.

I'm not sure what wiser thing Spoco2 could have done. It's not like you can just wish prejudice away. It's a pattern that your brain has noticed, and brains are brilliant at pattern matching. They will not just accept it if you repeat to yourself it's not so. The next time Spoco2 or I hear that accent, we'll still think it sounds unintelligent, unless we start hearing examples of intelligent speakers using it.>> ^bareboards2:

@spoco2....
Maybe if you had just done a tad bit of research and replaced your own mental image? Take responsibility for the fact that it is you who is uninformed about intelligent folks with southern accents, instead of putting your prejudice out there?
I think that might be the essential problem. We all have prejudices. We need to take personal responsibility to reshape our thinking patterns. By asking the question, the prejudicial point of view was somehow oddly reinforced. Giving it energy, instead of bleeding the energy out of it. Does that make sense? By the fact of asking, it somehow perpetuated the stereotype. It's not logical, but humans aren't logical in every moment.
My cousin came to visit from Oklahoma to the Pacific Northwest, at age 50. First time outside Middle America. It broke my heart when she said she didn't want to talk to anyone for fear that they would think she was some dumb yokel because of her accent.
Because it is out there that if you talk that way you are stupid.

Occupy the Holidays (Politics Talk Post)

I stumbled upon the best inexpensive present this year....

A local woman is a big supporter of schools in Burma. She has worked to make the most wonderful cards, with a photo of Burma as the artwork on the front (she took all the photos.)Somehow, she got all the printing costs donated.

They cost $3.99 each. 100% of the proceeds go to fund a Burmese child's school costs. Two cards will fund a child for the year.

I don't usually do the massive buying of presents for everyone in my sphere. This year, I bought a bunch of these cards and have been giving them as remembrances of the season -- whatever season you celebrate. Even if it is just the fact that the days are getting longer -- that is a reason to celebrate, up here in the Pacific Northwest.

So someone gets a card they can use for whatever purpose they want, and I just helped a kid on the other side of the world.

Now THAT is fun to do! Puts me right in the mood!

You sons of bitches. I could have been there in fifteen minutes and I wouldn't have let you drink apricot beer.

The Pacific Northwest has the best beer in the world, hands down. Anyone who might doubt that would do well to remember that 80% of US hops are grown in Washington alone. We had a fire here a few years back in one barn in the Yakima Valley. That one barn contained 4% of the worlds hop supply.

But I swear that if there's ever another meet-up in PDX, I won't get all preachy about the beer.

That's hysterical.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, and for me, trolling was always the fishing method you describe. I had to turn my head around to make it mean something else.

Although I do think that shinyblurry is still trolling while doing also exactly what you say -- I believe he honestly wants to convert anybody he can, and that can only happen if you rise to his "bait" and engage in a conversation.

I am so happy. I can go back to my old definition of trolling!

I think the problem is you don't understand what the internet definition of "troll" is.
What I have picked up from reading dibs and dabs -- a troll is someone who lies in wait under a metaphorical bridge, reaching out to grab an unsuspecting walker-by when they least expect it. A troll lives to push his or her own agenda -- that of upsetting others and engaging them in protracted conversations that go nowhere.
My observation is that sometimes the trolls do it for fun and say things they don't believe at all (except they do have the imagination to come up with horrendous things, so they are capable of being truly horrendous -- "there is an element of truth in all jokes").
Sometimes, a "troll" takes a position that is antithetical to the community s/he is trolling -- a liberal stance on a conservative site, a conservative stance on a liberal site.
Some do it because they believe in their cause and they want to poke sticks at "the other."
