Unethical practices in American prisons?! Next we'll find out there are some dirty cops, or maybe even a politician who's not working to benefit their electorate!!!

Glad of this one small victory though.

ROTFLMFAHS!!!
Biden has cut the deficit in half, by over $1.5 TRILLION PER YEAR since 2020. Trump raised it every year, more than tripling it in 2020! You clearly haven’t thought your position through.

So that’s a “yes”…you support the terroristic taking the economy hostage and murdering it if the right isn’t capitulated too like a kidnapper with his knife to your children’s throats. You think the right thing to do is give the terrorist kidnapper anything they want and let them walk away to do it again next week. Sinking ever lower, Gary.

America doesn’t negotiate with terrorists, that only emboldens them….if you were an American and not a terrorist you would know that.

You support terroristic legislating by blackmail because you know your party is incapable of Democratic legislating and has no love for America or its citizens. You support economy destroying threats because your party only knows how to destroy economies but you hope they can blame Biden if he signs off on any “deal”.

1) you were more than fine with spending like a drunken sailor on things that hurt America when Trump added 1/3 of the total debt in one term, crashed the economy, blew up the debt and deficit, killed 1 million Americans and disabled 2 million, and created 15% unemployment…you actually want to go back. Biden has spent exponentially less, and boosted revenue massively, both help the debt.
2) you moron, paying the bills you already racked up isn’t spending more. Not paying them is WASTING TRILLIONS for absolutely nothing…clearly what the right prefers. You want to max out the credit card on nonsense for 4 years then tell Democrats they can’t spend a dime except on Republican corporate welfare programs or you’ll just not pay the bill and get the card cancelled, knowing it will make the entire family homeless, handing the family farm over to China who holds our debt and can forclose. 🤦‍♂️

Estimates are near 8 million jobs lost and over $10 TRILLION in private stock losses expected in just the short term, far worse if it’s a long term problem…TRILLIONS in government losses and TRILLIONS MORE EVERY YEAR in higher interest rates…a complete government shutdown as government employees go unpaid so stop working (but continue to rack up salaries that will be paid eventually, for not working)…and a global depression worse than the Republican caused deregulation recession of ‘08.

I dare you to claim evaporating $10 trillion somehow SAVES money….I double dog dare you.

You are prepared to get poorer for nothing at all while STILL having the debt grow thanks to Trump’s outrageous spending spree, but are insistent that Republican spending not lose a dime.
Every Republican program should be cancelled first, all those contracts/bills to build the wall defaulted, all those military programs making equipment we no longer use cancelled, million dollar fake “investigations” that have only exposed the criminal hypocrisy of the right and not corroborated a single accusation cancelled, the tax breaks for billionaires and corporations that did NOT create a boom they caused a crash cancelled, any and all federal payments to red states cancelled because it only makes them reliant on the federal government which is like slavery…then not only would no loss of the societal safety net (guaranteeing a wave of homelessness never seen), 1 million vets would not be made homeless, etc AND the debt would actually be lowered.

You love the idea of getting poorer for spite and nothing more, dumbshit. If you just stop paying your credit card, the debt isn’t forgiven, it raises exponentially with higher interest and fees and lowers your ability to borrow more, that’s what’s already happened and will be so much worse in the depression by choice the right wants to cause. The money will still be spent, it will just cost exponentially more to borrow it.

Republicans have left the Capitol for their 5 day weekend to return Tuesday to restart “negotiations” they are pretending to be involved in, meaning default is now guaranteed without some legal wrangling by Biden to end run them. He should have done so in February.

The damage this is going to cause the economy is ten fold what it claims to be trying to save. It is clearly not about saving money, it’s 100% about blocking any democratic legislation by usurping the president is control of the purse strings. You would never accept this from the left. You know it too.

I know anyone not a brain dead cultist slug knows this, this fight isn’t over the debt, it’s about control…control from the minority by terrorism. We need a second amendment solution…only 20 representatives need to miss the vote for sanity to return.

Jesus fuck….these morons you vote for, who vehemently oppose keeping the irs staffed and want to cut its workforce by 90000 are at the same time complaining on the floor how SLOW the irs is, that it can take months to get assigned an agent, and near a year to get a refund in many cases….but they don’t want to hire more workers, they want to drive off those that are left by removing their ability to telecommute and work from home. They are pretending that working from home is not working at all, but vacation.

I think their constituents would be shocked to see how much telecommuting the Republican representatives themselves do, especially if you consider it vacation.
More dishonest blame games over the repercussions of their own actions. More totally hypocritical stupidity. More “Do as we say, not as we do” because the right thinks rules and laws don’t apply to them….to paraphrase you, “only a fool would follow the law if it hurts them to do so”.

Typical daily hypocritical dishonest nonsense from your ilk, the most dishonest group of people to ever stain the planet.

In case you aren’t aware, this is one more red herring to distract you from their refusal to increase the debt ceiling unless they get their way, because tanking the economy doesn’t matter one bit to them….they’ll just blame Biden and idiots like you will agree.

517000 jobs in January. Something else they’re trying to distract you from….the fastest covid recovery of any country’s economy thanks to relief for lower income citizens after the worst economic fall from Covid while Trump denied Covid and gave handouts to millionaires.

Tesla driver loses control as car speeds down street

newtboy says...

That’s Tesla’s position…but no.

The man had been complaining about the brakes not working properly for months according to his family (yet kept driving, making him culpable imo).

It’s easily possible his brake sensor failed on the pedal, then there would be no light. Since I assume, to be capable of autopilot, Tesla brakes are by wire/electrical, not hydraulic, a simple sensor failure means no brakes at all and no brake lights. (And no record that he hit the brakes)

Again, never once heard of a panic pedal misidentification lasting 1/2 that long. Possible, but unlikely. 99/100 of pedal misidentification are well under 1 second mistakes during parking. There have been many reports of throttle sticking/ accelerating without throttle input in teslas.

Since Tesla denies fault EVERY TIME NO MATTER WHAT, and hides the vast majority of driver assisted crashes, I’ll wait for the third party investigation, but on the surface, to me, it looks like a software (or hardware) failure….and that’s what the driver says too.

bcglorf said:

Not that I want to be siding with the corporation, but I'm inclined to believe that at least the brake lights would've remained connected to pressing the brake pedal, no?

And... not seeing any brake lights in that video, it looks like driver error and then panic.

Tesla BLOWS AWAY Expectations. (Q2 2022 Recap )

luxintenebris says...

please. communist?

think about this: one of the cons of communism is if one person is getting all the benefits of working as not working - incentive is nixed.

w/all the mergers of segments of the business world - oil, media suppliers, etc - the effect mirrors communism. w/o serious competition, these companies have less incentive to improve products, increase efficiency, or reduce consumer costs.

to wit: most of the conservative policies are closer to communism than ideas like trust-busting, fair employee compensation, reasonable taxation for high earners, etc.

most of the 'progressive' ideas would spur capitalism, thus the blue is more about the green than the red is about keeping markets stable and healthy.

prefer the idea of regulated capitalism over death through fascism.

what led to '08?

anyway...if you're money is on Tesla*, good luck. good to see a body putting their money where their mouth is. and great to see you in favor of moving away from fossil fuels. investing in the future.

if we can get there.

FYI: interesting article about the marketing of tesla

from the skinny on the CEO, it is an absolute match.

BTW: keeping up w/the Jan 6 spankings? hard to buy the love of a loon, versus the safety of a nation. shakes a person to the core. all those serene conservatives w/o one iota of spine. if this is your idea of quality leadership - no Tesla stock is gonna fill the void of losing a homeland

STUDY: $500 Per Month Life Changing For The Homeless

bcglorf says...

Yeah, the crutch of it for me is the UBI moniker.

What you describe at the end of your post, minimum income, is really just a rewording of the existing social security and welfare systems across the western world. I know they look different in each, but here in Canada what you describe is more or less our already existing system's design goal. Welfare money exists for those that straight up can not work, and an employment insurance system exists to protect those inbetween jobs, meanwhile other multiple programs are aimed at distributing financial assistance to the lower income groups.

Despite all of that already existing, UBI is still being heralded up here in trials as well as a replacement. The problem being that for the needy the UBI pitches are generally a step backwards.

Eg. $500/month is the UBI pitch, and they say it'll be great because everyone gets it no matter what so it's simple and fair and nobody is left behind. The trouble though is that the reality is the truly in need people were already benefitting more than the $500/month under the existing systems, and the cost was much less because it was targeted.

I here UBI and get very worried about folks just selling snake oil 'solutions' that in the end are just a demand to adopt their own particular flavor of wealth redistribution.

newtboy said:

Did they offer that in the program, or was it only random individuals….or are you extrapolating, assuming the program became universal? I thought this plan was just for the indigent.

$500 each for 4 works out to more than my wife brought home for 40 hours a week after 15 years at her last job…..barely livable for 4 anywhere in California, a nice income in some states. Not a huge amount to provide for 6 months. How much does temporary housing, services, extra law enforcement, etc cost over that time for 4 people? I assume their close.

Yes, universal income is costly, but most on the right won’t consider giving the destitute money if they don’t get a handout too, that likely multiplies the amount by over 10 times. With a means test, it would be billions, maybe under $100 billion. We spent nearly $6 trillion on bad Covid response in 2020, including trillions to corporate welfare handouts with no strings attached and they still fired millions of workers. I think if that’s ok we can afford to invest in making people productive again instead of drains on society (of course, not everyone will benefit, but 75% success must be a win overall). If not, socialize any corporation that took a bailout, we bought em, we should own them.

…Or taking on more debt like every government project, but the increase in gdp from turning costs into profits likely pays for the program without a dime in new taxes, just a reduction in costs of handling the homeless and new taxes from their incomes….especially if you have a means test and not universal income.

Yes, they convoluted by calling it universal income but focusing on homeless. It should be UMI. Universal Minimum Income….under employed get less than unemployed up to a certain minimum livable combined income, fully employed (with living wages) get nothing….IMO. Sadly, a large portion of people can’t see what’s in that plan for them (no homeless, less crime dumbshits) so won’t consider it unless they also get $500 even though that’s not even a noticeable amount to them….one more ivory backscratcher.

The Lab Hypothesis | Real Time (HBO)

Trying to apply laymans logic to sequences of DNA does not work. You have to know things to be able to deduce stuff like a scientist. Look at the results. Who dies? Who lives? How do you reduce the risk that people die? Think faster and quieter than Joe Rogan.

For your daily life who cares if it came from a lab? For your mental picture of China, sure, it would be nice to know...

Where’s the exit? What a terrifying trap of existence that could only be escaped by human extinction, otherwise there would be no end to the lives you live. Me no like this theory.

If the point is for us to mature, it’s not working.

I think Stan Marsh had it right. When asked “What’s it like after you die?” He answered “I think it’s pretty much like before you were born.”

PFAS: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

newtboy says...

Actually it’s both. The final forms aren’t stable in the real world, they shed particles that are ingested, vapors inhaled, who knows, they are likely absorbed through the skin from many products.

Assume they aren’t actually toxic, functioning as designed they coat digestive systems and, if the report is to be believed, individual cells in extreme cases, leading to things like digestive issues and vaccinations not working. In developing children, it sounds disastrous…and it’s everywhere and in everyone….often in high levels.

This is akin to a crop that’s mildly toxic, not one adjacent to a pre existing separate toxic weed. You can’t plant this crop without permanently contaminating the field, and adjacent fields, and the local water sources, and to lesser extent anyone who uses the crop. There’s no separate toxic weed here, just a toxic crop we keep planting in new places, making the contamination much much more widespread at constantly increasing levels with no way to clean it up and little knowledge of the long term effects of such contamination. Pretty big gamble to take with the entire planet just so your thin rain coat doesn’t leak, don’t you think? Especially with a non biodegradable easily spread but impossible to remove toxic chemical with relatively unknown cumulative effects and no method whatsoever for removing it from people or the environment….like this one.

bremnet said:

So my contention and the view of many in the end user community is that it's not the final form of some of these compounds that are bad, it's the horrendous messes we leave producing them. We can't unwind our Clock of Dumb, but killing the entire crop just to get rid of the long ago seeded weeds doesn't solve the actual problem, it makes it much, much larger.

Thanks for your comments.

Chicago Cop Abandons Woman Being Threatened With A Gun

newtboy says...

You have to make a Hell of a lot of assumptions to come to that conclusion. 1) that he has no camera. 2) that the victim/witness wouldn't be believed. 3) that physical evidence wouldn't prove it was a good shooting. 4) that there weren't other cameras.
It's possible, but not the most likely outcome. Abandoning a black woman leaving her to be murdered on camera is FAR more likely to spark riots and accusations that he would have stayed and protected a white woman.

Edit:police scanner traffic does provide some information. A dispatcher indicates that a man “pointed the gun at (a) mother and (a) father multiple times” and was in the stairwell when police were called.
It should not have been a surprise when the responding officer encountered a man with a gun.

3 people are killed by police every single day. There aren't riots every single day over it. It's not an honest position to claim every time a black man is shot by police it's cause for a riot. That's total nonsense intended to delegitimize a legitimate movement against inappropriate police violence...that's not ALL police violence. Sometimes police violence is necessary...just not >half the times it's used, and usually not to the extent (like shooting someone 142 times).

There's a middle ground between swat teams going in shooting over a nonviolent mental health call and a cop abandoning a victim to run like a coward from an armed attacker.

Maybe if he shot, but not to kill, outcomes could be better....or tried non lethal methods first. Maybe if he followed policy and didn't go to a domestic violence call alone. The one thing certain to not work is turning his back (probably making his vest useless) and running away from the victim and armed attacker. That put him at the most danger of being shot in the back and her being murdered, and it violated his oath, and it indicates black victims won't be protected.

olyar15 said:

But did he know he was on camera? Did he have a bodycam? The only reason the suspect was seen on camera holding a gun was because the cop backed away. If he had drawn his gun and fired the moment he saw the suspect holding the gun, it wouldn't have been caught on that camera because the suspect was still in the room. Then you would have a situation of only eyewitness testimony. And you would have riots.

McConnell Threatens Scorched Earth GOP Attacks Voting Rights

newtboy says...

What do you think about removing the automatic filibuster and returning to requiring a senator to stand and speak?
I don't think the minority should have the unbridled ability to effortlessly stop debate and voting on any bill they like, no matter which party they belong to, but I have no problem with them actually extending debate so long as they actually debate (or at least speak). Killing bills and debate because supporters don't have a super majority as the norm has paralyzed government and is rapidly getting worse. It makes compromise unnecessary and obstructionism a platform, and that's not working.

Mordhaus said:

Harry Reid nuked the filibuster to approve Federal level justices. McConnell just exploited what the former Majority Leader did.

When under pressure from Republicans and Trump in the first two years of Trump's term to do away with the filibuster and allow the all-Republican government to do what the all Democratic one is hoping to do now, McConnell wisely chose not to.

Whether you care for McConnell or not, or if you care for the minority party or not, doing away with the filibuster to allow the party currently in charge to ram legislation through is only going to set precedent for the same thing to happen when the situation changes.

Democrats may think that forcing through HR1 will mean that the Republicans will never control the government again, but that is not going to happen. Americans are fickle and turn on the government in power at the drop of a hat. Case in point, Trump should have never won a term as President in a normal world. People hated Hillary so much that he did.

Turning the Senate into a smaller House of Representatives relying simply on a majority vote for everything would create situations where either side will ram through sweeping changes (or erase those of the previous side) every 4 years or so. What will we do in 2024 if somehow Trump or his lackeys get elected and he has access to a fully Republican senate, congress, and scotus, with no filibuster unlike 2016-2018?
