The Day Jesus Returns

shinyblurry says...

Hi Sagemind,

I'm not offended by your questions or statements. I am guessing you didn't watch much of the video or else you wouldn't be saying all of these prophecies are based on an eclipse. It doesn't a do whole lot for your argument when you skim the video and then mischaracterize the content. This is the atheist MO; come to a premature conclusion based on incomplete information in a rush to falsify the data. Having only a superficial understanding of the subject matter, how would you expect to convince anyone of your position?

The sun being darkened is one of literally dozens (maybe hundreds) of signs that indicate the Day of the Lord, which this video covers. The Jews, and Christians aren't just looking for an eclipse, they are looking at world events, cultural conditions, and a myriad of other things which confirm these prophecies. Without the dozens of other accompanying signs, a simple eclipse wouldn't have any weight in fulfilling these prophecies. The Jewish culture knew about eclipses, that isn't what this is talking about.

This is a very indepth subject. For example, Sir Issac Newton wrote on bible prophecy extensively and said that he considered his work on prophecy more important than his work on mathematics. Based on his studies he corrected predicted when the Jews would return to their homeland. Do you think he just guessed? Read his writings. There is something there a little deeper than atheist talking points.

You've also mischaracterized my faith. I don't believe in God because I was scared and I needed something to lean on. I believe in God because of personal revelation; God revealed Himself to me and showed me that Jesus is the Messiah and the bible is His book. I was content to be a secular agnostic and I wasn't afraid of my death. God wasn't content with that and I responded to His call.

Your oversimplication of faith proves that you don't know a lot about it, or why Christians believe what they believe. I don't think that is very intelligent to dismiss something that you really don't understand. I think your rejection of my faith is mostly based on cherry picking information which has been spoonfed to you by atheist sources instead of a sincere investigation which weighed both sides instead of just one. I would love for you to prove me wrong here.

Have you ever considered giving the claims of Christianity a chance by asking Jesus Christ to reveal Himself to you? Either He is alive and can hear you, or He isn't. If He did give you a sign, would you be willing to follow it?

How Star Wars The Last Jedi Should Have Ended

Jinx says...

They weren't that bad.

Apart from that bit where they lightspeed the ship into the other ship. Like, if your universe has ftl travel, you gotta invent some reason why you can't do that or it turns every ship into a weapon of mass destruction. Why do they build all these planet killers when they could just light speed shit into whatever they want. And yeah yeah I know this is a place where people can do magic, and space seems to be really small, and there is sound in space, and nothing seems to obey newton's laws etc etc... but come on, at least try to be consistent.

Other than that I enjoyed it.

Veritasium - Worlds Heaviest Weight

ChaosEngine says...

Pounds? Feet?

Jesus America, get your shit together.

Kilograms. Metres.

Hell, you're measuring Newtons which are Kg/m/s^2 .... do you see lb or f in that equation?

This is why things crash into mars.

Will AI make us immortal? Or will it wipe us out?

ChaosEngine says...

*quality

I'm currently reading "Superintelligence" by Nick Bostrom and it's pretty *fear inducing.

If we ever do hit the singularity... it doesn't really matter what we do.

First up, if it's an AGI is to be any use, it needs to be at least as smart as us. Which means, by definition, it will be capable of writing its own AGI.

There are any number of nightmare scenarios where even a seemly benevolent goal might be disastrous for humanity.

"Multivac, fix the environment!"
"Ok, what's the major issue with the environment?"
/wipes out humanity

"Multivac, solve the Riemann hypothesis!"
"Ok, but I'll need a lot of processing power"
/converts entire planet to a giant cpu

Even if, by some miracle, we end up developing a benevolent AI that understands our needs and is aligned with them, (e.g. the Culture Minds), we are no longer in control.

We might be along for the ride, but we're certainly not driving.

The other thing that's interesting is a question of scale. We tend to think of intelligence in human terms, like this.

infants..... children.....mentally impaired..Sarah Palin.....normal people.....Neil deGrasse Tyson.....Feynman, Einstein, Newton, etc.

But that ignores all the lower intelligences:

bacteria...Trump......insects.....sheep.....dogs...chimps, dolphins, etc............................... dumb human..smart human.

But from a superintelligence's point of view, the scale looks more like this
bacteria.. humanity ... Tesla ................................................... ..................................................................................................
..................................................................................................
............................................................................................. AI

Are You Ready To Be Outpaced By Machines? Quantum Computing

dannym3141 says...

When someone says something like "we're exploiting parallel universes", what they mean is that one of the many theories that can be used to describe quantum behaviour such as entanglement is to do with parallel universes.

That doesn't mean there aren't other theories, it doesn't mean there are parallel universes, it's just one of the few ways we can make it make sense is if it exists and carries information in a dimension that is not tangible to us.

When Archimedes invented his screw, using gravity to drive water uphill, he could have said that he's using an invisible multi-dimensional goblin to move the water; well that's one theory and its irrefutable until Newton makes an appearance. And even then you can still say "yeah but what we know of gravity is still a multidimensional goblin."

Having said that, it has as much likelihood of being correct as any other theory in its infancy.

Nobody's Exactly Sure How Much A Kilogram Is Right Now

ChaosEngine says...

I get what you're saying, but just to be clear, the value of a Newton doesn't change. It would be pretty useless as an SI unit if it did.

"One newton is the force needed to accelerate one kilogram of mass at the rate of one metre per second squared in direction of the applied force."

1 newton is 1 newton if you're on earth, in space or at the centre of a sun.

1kg on earth will exert approx 9.8N (1 kg * 9.8m/s^2) towards the centre of the earth, where as 1kg in orbit will exert almost 0N towards the centre of the earth.

hatsix says...

Not exactly... grams measure mass, not weight. Imperial Units have the 'slug', which doesn't change based on where you are measuring.

The metric system DOES have units of measurement that change based on where you are at on the globe, called newtons.

MonkeySpank said:

This only applies to the metric system. For the empirical system, it gets even more confusing. Here's a simple quote from NASA's Pre-Jesus era website:

The effective acceleration of gravity at the poles is 980.665 cm/sec/sec while at the equator it is 3.39 cm/sec/sec less due to the centrifugal force. If you weighed 100 pounds at the north pole on a spring scale, at the equator you would weigh 99.65 pounds, or 5.5 ounces less.

Whenever we talk about weight in pounds, we need to define where with respect to the center of our little bluey.

Why Are Aeroplane Wings Angled Backwards?

Chairman_woo says...

God dammit, pressure is not how wings produce lift! (in his defence it's an extremely common mis-explanation)

If it was then they wouldn't ever work upside down (which they clearly can do when designed for it). Nor does the top and bottom airflow always meet again on the other side evenly, or in fact is the bottom stream always faster than the top.

Bernoulli's principle augments lift in efficient designs, but it's newtons 3rd law which actually makes them work.

You can even see the wash vortex falling down off the wings flying through smoke. It's the equal and opposite reaction from this deflection that causes the majority of lift and drag from a wing .

Mordhaus says...

Eh, life isn't fair. I wonder sometimes how many great scientists, artists, and just all around good people we miss out on because of where they were born or how they were raised.

I mean look at the caste system in India. How many Einsteins, Newtons, and others have we never known of due to them being born as low caste or Dalits (untouchables)?

I'm glad she struggled through, but her story is far from unique.
