Why should college be free

spawnflagger says...

Don't know this Stossel guy (seems like a tool), but was always a fan of Mike Rowe, and also his initiative to get more workers in the trades.

I've seen plumbers (2-yr degree + certification) with higher hourly rates than lawyers (8-yr degree + bar exam). I also know a guy who makes more now as a general contractor than he did as a DBA (B.S. in Computer Science).
I think part of this is supply & demand- not as many tradespeople so the wages go up to hire those willing, and the cost of higher wages gets passed on to the customer.

But the point of this video isn't "should you go to college?", it's "the liberals want hard-working people to pay for college for all these liberal students", which is a false premise and why I can't upvote it.

I think community college should be taxpayer-funded for those students who want more than just high school. (but they should have to maintain certain GPA to remain free)
As far as other private Universities, they should be able to charge for it. Colleges that receive Federal or State money should have a cap on the rate that tuition can increase per year (maybe based on inflation). Over the past 20 years, most college tuition has gone up way more than inflation or wages.

Rather than student-loan forgiveness, I'd rather see a federal program that will help those students who couldn't finish school go back and get their degree (where it will pay for itself) or get a different degree. Most of this sub-$10k student debt they talk about is for students who never got their degree.

Bill Maher: New Rule – Don't Romanticize Socialism

Mordhaus says...

I think the biggest thing that is upsetting millennials is the cost of college. Bill is a comedian, I get that, but if he doesn't comprehend that many kids are entering a mediocre job market with 60k or more of student loans riding on their backs, then he is very out of touch.

Of course there are other options, like skilled trades such as the ones Mike Rowe tries to educate teens about, but the reality is that if you go to college on your own dime today, you are going to have a ton of debt by the time you get out. I got my degree back in the 90's on pell grants and money I got from working outside of school. There is absolutely no way I could have afforded it if I was going to college today. I also would have balked at putting myself deep in debt to go.

Mike Rowe Explains Why Not to Follow Your Passion

Mordhaus says...

This is just a slight variation of his regular message, which does pertain to the kids of today. Mike Rowe has pushed mightily for kids to re-think the idea of 'You must go to college' because what he said is true, there are a HUGE number of skilled trade openings that no one is filling.

These trades pay a large amount of money; for instance, we recently had to pay for a skilled plumber to fix my wife's shower and with slightly less than 1 hour of labor, our bill (sans parts) was 147 dollars. They usually work on the apprentice system, so after 4-5 years you are considered a Master level if you do all the requirements. The problem is, these jobs require actual work and aren't 'sexy'. However, if you compare them to the nature of college and the white collar job market these days, you end up making a ton of money without crippling college debt. You also have a dedicated job market, something you can't guarantee with many non-science/engineering/math degrees.

It might have been better had he said, "Be aware of other options, sometimes following your dreams isn't the easiest path." For me, I got lucky and followed my dreams into a good job before I had to take disability and retire early. I was fortunate enough to have good employee-option tech stocks as well or I might be very poor today. If I had to do it again, in today's world, I might have eschewed college and went for a skilled trade.
