Train plowing through truck carrying massive concrete beam

BSR says...

Weren't you watching‽

Didn't you see the massive concrete beam that was struck by a speeding Norfolk Southern diesel locomotive‽

You didn't hear Priscilla's orgasmic yelp‽

Didn't you notice the Border Collie was in the video above the one you're questioning‽

You don't think a giant Barbie Ken cause such a crash‽

Ever heard of Donald Trump‽

Are you questioning yourself‽

Dammit‽

StukaFox said:

So what exactly happened here? A train hit something? Is Priscilla ok? Were any Border Collies hurt? Did a giant Barbie cause this? Can a bunny really eat a horse's face off?

So many questions in life -- who has time for it all?

Shit, that was a question too, wasn't it?

DAMMIT!

Why We See The White Light Near Death

BSR says...

I saw the white light once and thought I was going to die. Turned out I got across the railroad tracks just in the nick of time before the locomotive hit me.

Car Hauler Vs Amtrak train

surfingyt says...

top comment:

"To those who wonder why all crossings aren't rebuilt so that auto haul trucks specifically can clear them... first, this would cost an ungodly amount of money - for one specific type of truck. Professional drivers wouldn't let themselves get caught in this situation. Carhaulers ride very low and their drivers know this. They know this as a fact. I'm a 30-year veteran truck driver, and that includes auto haul, and there is no way a professional auto hauler would have even attempted to get over that sharp crest.

Trailers only bottom out if the drivers puts it there. Trailers only hit low bridges if the driver puts it there. In short, trucks only go wherever the driver puts them - and a low-slung trailer is a hazard the driver is responsible for knowing how to negotiate. Period.

Absolutely no sympathy for this idiot who could very well have killed any number of people. My thoughts are with the locomotive crew, seeing that truck looming ahead and knowing this could very well be the end of their lives and there's nothing they can do about it."

Conductor scares two girls who were walking on the tracks

cryptoz says...

I fix locomotives, when idling they don't sound much louder then a semi idling so if the wind is in their face and they are talking I doubt they would hear it... If your talking about walking down the track, ya after some time with Loco I now walk beside the tracks and if it's been longer then 2 minutes since the last time I looked over my shoulder, I get mad at myself for being so stupid. Best stay at least 1 arm length from rail or just avoid altogether

Train Coming In A Little Hot

The 89-Year Old Who Built the Train of the Future

Keeping a sealed pneumatic tube along the entire track? Sounds like a maintenance nightmare, to be honest. How do you switch rails? How do you get a stranded propulsion module off the track (can't just get a diesel locomotive to drag the thing, can you now)? What are the backup breaking systems for failures on those 10% grades?

I suppose this might at the very best be a niche thing, more so than the current Transrapid/Maglev system. Airport shuttles, maybe.

Neural Networks for Character Control

artician says...

Really impressive, but despite the description I'm not sure how this differs from the current, modern approach, beyond using more processing power for the environment assessment and realtime decision-making, weighting and blending. It just seems like a more thorough and complete AI-supported locomotion system.

RFlagg says...

Not as expensive as I feared, but still not exactly affordable... The locomotive on Amazon is just a tad under $80 USD. We've tried similar and cheaper such things from the art store, meh on those, but they don't seem as detailed as these either.

Why the White Man Gotta Be King of the Jungle?

TheFreak says...

Not a monkey joke, that wouldn't get a laugh from anyone. there is a racial stereotype that black people don't swim. Perpetuated even by black comedians. It's not considered the most offensive stereotype. More playful than serious, like, "white people put mayonnaise on everything."

And if you watched the old black and white Tarzan films, he had only two modes of locomotion, 'swing on vine' and 'swim'.

I believe it's a 'monkey' joke.

Because some primate species (barring exceptional individuals) won't go into the water.

Tornado Video Shot as Home is Destroyed

nanrod says...

Yah, I started out thinking OK this goes in the EIA channel but after reading the daily herald article I realized that I love this guy. After realizing he wasn't going to make it to the basement or wherever his wife was (just as well) he proceeds to video the event. And he didn't vertical video it. This really brings home for me the actual experience of living through a tornado and how every survivor you ever hear compares the sound to a locomotive.

Mordhaus said:

This was basically a suicide attempt [Edit: Leaving for posterity, but later information indicates he was just a badass]. He didn't even move when it was clear that odds were likely that the tornado was absolutely going to hit him. I'm not sure what protective measures his wife took, but this guy at the very least could have moved away from the window and got into a tub or something.

*dark *death *wtf
