Everything We Think We Know About Addiction Is Wrong

poolcleaner says...

You do realize the people who have the whole world as their oyster are in an entirely different form of isolation, right? You're oversimplifying the concept of isolation in an effort to push your Jesus drug.

I understand this because I have lived that life; being both the life of the parties at fortune 500 companies and a solitary hermit, addicted and lonely in a world that no one else fully understands. Not because of a lack of Jesus drug, my friend. I tried the Jesus drug and it is the cause of much of my cognitive dissonance.

The love of a God didn't save me from trauma, sexual and gender identity issues, clinical depression, and the ever looming bipolar disorder. Living is hard, even if it's also simultaneously fun and easy for me to succeed; because the concept of my personal identity isn't flush with the expectations that society and my family have. Being myself almost always gets me in trouble and is misunderstood with sometimes violent repercussions. This forms further cognitive dissonance which is a psychological isolation that has physical isolation as a matter of course. Depression runs in my family, despite all of their love and adoration of Jesus. Southern Baptists, bless their hearts.

There are so many other factors you're ignoring just so that you can present the lamest of analogies of seeds on dry soil and sin cages.

Sin cages. Ignorant science versus the logical sin cage. Nuff said.

There's almost nothing logical about anything you say. The only logic is that you make things make sense according to the Bible. If it's scientifically logical but goes against the teachings Christ or God, it's wrong. If the Bible can support the science, it's good!

But that's not how science works. Scientists do not make stupid excuses in order to support prior written works which lack evidence. If something doesn't make sense, a scientist no longer uses it as a basis to explain the world around them.

You, on the other hand, make every excuse to prove your stupid philosophy is true and that science is wrong for not agreeing upon the truth of your hippy God love cult. Prove me to be objectively incorrect in my perspective and I will give up on my convictions. Because what is a conviction if it's a false one based upon circular logic and feel good analogies? Oh, them feels. Them Jesus feels. Jesus hippy love.

Frankie Knuckles (RIP) & The Origins Of House - mini-docu

Awesome, so spot on. I found the house music scene in around 93 in the San Francisco bay area. The following ten years were the best time of my life. So many parties and so much dancing. Such great memories.

"it's not just a sound. It's not just a music. it's a culture. It's a way of dancing"

Pardon me? You think the Republicans should win based on the economy that their platform was primarily responsible for crashing and keeping anemic? No. Not even a faint maybe, but hell no!
For nearly my entire life, the Republican party has preached one set of things (fiscal responsibility and smaller government), and done the exact opposite when in power (record deficits and increased government). The economy does significantly better under a Democratic administration. Everything they say is a lie. Or at least you'll be right more often than not if you assume it to be so.
WHY would anyone who actually looks at facts EVER vote Republican, unless they're rich enough to buy the candidates for their own personal benefit?
>> ^Xaielao:
I think after this election, if Obama wins, the republican party is going to think long and hard about their issues. By all rights they should be winning this thing simply based off the economy. However, the fringe of their party is ever-increasing and the number of growing voting blocks they shun and hate and try to repress is continuing to rise. I think that most won't ever accept that they are a fringe party, and that wing will become a minority party after a few more elections, which they may well lose as their voting block diminishes. I don't expect this to happen in the next four years however, and that their attempt to suppress the voting rights of the poor, minorities, the old and young will continue and become even more severe, as will their ever-growing hate against such groups. It is a vicious cycle that in the end might mean the death of the party. People scoff at this but it has happened before.
I personally put the blame on things like fox news, which has helped create the persistent bubble of misinformation and hate. As long as millions of republicans continue to watch it heavily and believe every word, including republicans holding office, and even the presidential candidate (as this clip so clearly shows).. that spiral will continue.

I of course, agree with you. It is all a grand masquerade that the republican party has dappled itself in fiscal responsibility when they never have backed up such claims. Perhaps I should have stated that. I meant more that with an economy like this, no president has ever won re-election (though it is improving quickly now) and that this should have been a much easier election for republicans based upon that, but that their crazy attitude and policies toward women, minorities, the poor, the old and the young has dwindled their voting block to such a point that they can no longer win a strait up election without doing the things Romney has done. Running to the middle while also denying everything you said during the primary, and the overwhelming voter ID laws, registration purges, laws against registration groups, etc in republican states, though thankfully every last one of them was shut down in the courts. I personally actually support voter ID, but not in the draconian sense the republicans are trying to instate them.

Ah, yeah, I guess that could be what he was implying. If so, I'd have to admit that stupidity has generally ruled in the last 200 years (or 2000, or probably 200000), that much is true.

I think what he means, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that historically speaking, in the US, any time there is a significant slump in the economy, regardless of who started it, whether or not the incumbent is fixing things, the incumbent typically loses. a knee jerk reaction if you will.

How Corporations Destroyed American Democracy - Chris Hedges

Truckchase says...

That's the sort of mentality that allows these things to continue. If you want to live with your hair on fire that's fine, but don't tell people trying to help you to "shut the fuck up". You're free to quietly bury your head in the sand while we try to work our way out of this mess.

Once you get to a certain point in life I think you'll find that the "Debbie Downer" folks are those with your attitude. I live my life for my kids at this point in time,(and indirectly all of society) and realizing that I'm more interested in trying to positively shape the world they live in rather than living for myself. I'm perfectly happy surrounded by self-aware, intelligent people, which I'm pleased to find nearly everywhere I turn now that I know where to look.

Honestly I think you encompass your insecurity with the one line: "yes we're probably the shallowest society to ever exist, friggin get over it." Perhaps you could personally aspire to not be so shallow instead of fighting against others to make yourself comfortable with it?

Great sift!

Wow, I bet this guy is the freaking life of the party no matter where he goes. You wanna talk about a "Debbie Downer" this dude has got that role down to perfection. I've listened to this for a total of about 12 minutes so far and I'm already trying to think of the quickest way to off myself before I have to listen to any more of this depressing dribble.
Yes we're materialistic, yes Michael Jackson was a freak and we made him that way, yes we're probably the shallowest society to ever exist, friggin get over it. Go fly a kite or watch a spider spin it's web or smell a flower or something but for God's sake shut the fuck up.

ROAST X: ITS XTREME!!!! (Parody Talk Post)

blankfist says...

This stupid thing still going on? If you haven't noticed, rasch187 ain't this important. He's Norwegian, remember? No one cares for the Norwegians. They're the turd-like residue left over after the Swedes left.

I'm glad to see thinker247 is here having a lot of fun with his 'First!' jokes. Those are so fresh. Thinker is like that guy that shows up at the high school reunion still making the jokes people didn't laugh at in high school. This clown had the misfortune to name himself 'thinker247', as if after a single comment post we wouldn't realize that was absolutely the opposite of what he should've named himself.

I'm glad they got Crosswords to MC this. That's a lot fun. Who's MCing the next roast? Anagrams? Nothing spells good times like a word puzzle with a knife welding raccoon avatar. I could not think of a more unremarkable person to host this, to be honest. Well, there is one: nibiyabi. "I'll put a pilgrim hat on Darwin and give him some googly eyes. That'll make me the life of the party!" No, nibiyabi, that makes you unfunny. Though, his profile claims he likes cat fart videos, so he can't be all bad, can he?

Who let rougy in here? Isn't there a warrant out for him yet? He's a forty something year old man with an avatar of a naked boy. Rougy fancies himself a poet. I normally like to encourage artists, but after reading his most recent poem Doorways & Beginnings I think encouraging him to continue would be like encouraging choggie to become a linguistics professor.

Good to see laura and alien_concept in here. Two of the resident women on the Sift. I'm not sure what good the two of you will do on here, though, because last I checked Dag and Lucky hadn't installed a kitchen. But, you're two progressive and self-actualized women, right? That's really great. Now, put a @$*# in that mouth and fetch me a ham and cheese sandwich.

Speaking of phallic items in mouths, I almost forgot this roast was about rasch. Rasch is an ugly guy. He is. I don't have a joke for that... he's just an ugly guy. I'm not saying he's the ugliest guy in the world, but his mom had to get drunk to breast feed him. When he was born, his mom tried to take home the placenta instead. Janet Reno is a handsomer man than he is.

The Unfortunate Truth about the Death Penalty

snoozedoctor says...

The economics of the death penalty vary according to the country in which the penalty is dealt. I doubt it cost as much to hang Saddam as it would have to keep him in prison the rest of his life. On the other hand, in the U.S. with the endless appeals, it takes over a decade, on average, to execute someone. During that decade, more money is spent on legal fees than would be required to jail someone for life. China is probably another country where the cost of execution is low, although the government there is not about to say.

Richard Rhodes' book "Why they kill" is an interesting read. While a little rigid, he details a process whereby violent criminals undergo "violentization" that ultimately results in a self-identity as a violent person. I don't think evidence supports a high success rate of rehabilitation of truly violent individuals.

I've always been a bit ambivalent about executing criminals who have committed truly heinous crimes, such as rape and murder of children. I don't care much about having them around. And I do believe criminals caught in the act, or with conclusive DNA evidence, or even a body or two buried under freshly poured concrete in the basement can be held guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

I did hear someone advocate the "wrath of God" penalty for child murderers, as only God should have the right to take a man's life. The guilty party is taken to the top of a tall building each time a thunderstorm approaches. They are handed a lightning rod as it draws nigh and told, "let's see what God thinks of your ass this time."

Dark humor, but told by a comedian on TV one night, so don't pin it on me.
