Storing dead people at -196°C

noims says...

I don't get the big deal. People ask for stupid things to be done to their remains, including things that they think will give the everlasting life (albeit in heaven). This is more wasteful per corpse and I hope the practice doesn't get popular for that reason, but I'd say the waste pales in comparison to something like bitcoin mining.

I found the video itself interesting enough, particularly since it wasn't advocating the practice in any way.

I do disagree with the 'death is bad' premise, even though someone very close to me was recently given a few years to live. If no one dies we get unsustainable buildup of humans, and if only some people get to live forever that's probably worse.

You think that's the worst idea ever? In the immortal words of the jailer from Life Of Brian, it's not as nasty as something I just thought up.

How George Harrison Saved Monty Python

noims says...

Part of the reason George did this was that he and Eric Idle were good friends; Eric speaks about him a lot. There's one story that I love that tells a lot about their relationship. There are a few versions out there, but very roughly...

George heard that Eric was flying to Australia after a bout in hospital, and asked if he was going to be flying over India. As 'the spirital Beetle' he had a strong affinity to the country. As it happens, the flight did cross India, so George gave Eric an envelope to open when they were in Indian air space.

The cabin crew let Eric know when this was the case, and he solemnly opened the envelope. It contained one piece of sage advice: "Shag a Shiela for me."

Bonus fact: George appears in Life of Brian as "the gentleman who's letting us have the mount on Sunday": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbZRNM-9RKo

Big Think: John Cleese on Being Offended

bcglorf says...

John Cleese is hardly new to this. When he and the python troop made Life of Brian, more than 35 years ago, church leaders tried hard , and in many locations succeeded in getting it banned.

Back then he did the circuits talking with religious leaders defending that he had the right to still say something even if they disagreed with it. It's worth noting, much of his support came from within Academia were young students were eager to push back against the religious leaders controlling what people should and shouldn't say in a film.

Fast forward 35 years to today, and now a new batch of young students from Academia are making the exact same fight against what should and should not be said. Professors and administrators who don't get on board are getting fired. Students who don't get on board are being expelled.

Where the religious leaders used to try and shut down criticism of their views on religion, abortion, sexual identity and other subjects, today it is SJWs trying to shut down criticism of their views on religion, abortion, sexual identity and other subjects.

Cleese is at least being even handed with calling actions out on both ends of spectrum regardless were he sits on it. It's tragic that the notion of critical thought and argument is done better by comedians than supposed leaders of thought both 35 years ago and still today.

Comedians who thrive on being edgy and pushing those boundaries, yet get upset that sometimes people get offended by that pushing are way more annoying IMO.

"PC" isn't anyone stopping you from telling your edgy joke. But your jokes would no longer be edgy if everyone stopped giving a fuck or occasionally pushing back. You'd just be another Jeff Dunham, even if you see yourself as Bill Hicks.

Tell your edgy jokes, realize people will push back, and say "Oh, good. I'm not some boring nobody." rather than get way more offended at their "offense".

So then you are just vaguely telling others what to do ? after understanding your point I do not understand why it was brought to discussion. Was the point of that to make it a rule ? or bring light to the issue ? You offer your opinion, which is digested and respected, but after that fact, that is all it is, is opinion. Because as of now I know of no videosift ruling that states you are not allowed to do so. With all that being said the base of the paragraph, I wanted to know is what do you want to be done about it ?

**editors note: Not to edit what I said above, I understand by discussing it you are bringing light to it, but I think a sift poll or talking through a direct sift talk post would be best to get a concrete solution of terms.

The Life of Brian Vs. The Church

Kofi says...

You are right. I am putting forward that hunger is what "inspired" great artists of the renaissance era etc. It's easy to think of these artists as experimental layabouts the likes of which artist today are portrayed but given that most of the great artists of religious works lived in poverty and were commissioned to paint specific genres of work by the aristocracy wishing to espouse their holiness etc it is false to say that god inspired the artists per se. God may have inspired rich people to spend their money showing how holy they were or wanted to be portrayed to be.

>> ^artician:

>> ^Kofi:
I'm pretty sure money inspired the greatest art, music and architecture.

I'm certain that whatever an individual personally worships, is what they themselves are convinced inspire "the greatest art".
This isn't a slight against Kofi: I read your comment first before I had watched far enough to see the moment from the clip that inspired it, but thought of this aspect when hearing the gentleman from the church preach his perspective on it. The guy clearly spends so much time with his face in the bible, that he sees it everywhere when he finally looks up. Today our culture is clearly told to worship money, so it's easy to see its influence in everything (even if it's not there).
Just an opinion (inspired by money!!!!!)
