Iceman - Cool or Gay?

Jose Saramago's reaction after premiere at Cannes 2008

aspartam says...

>> ^neuralnoise:
Fernando Meirelles RULEZ! And so does Saramago´s work - pretty much everything he wrote.
City of God, by meirelles, is one of the best three brazilians movies ever made, and I´m really looking forward to seeing this one.

You should check out the sequel to City of God, City of Men. It's just as good as the first one. This director is so talented. I was fortunate enough to have a role in Blindness, and man, is this guy something. A genius, I say.

Zero 7 - Crosses

Why did the sloth cross the road?

ant says...

From YouTube description:

We came across this three-toed sloth struggling to cross the road between Arenal Volcano and San Jose. We formed a loose cordon to keep cars from running the guy over. He made it, slowly.
Story and photos at dolanbrau.com
Look for 'costa rica and the galapagos'.

To answer some questions in the comments:
a) it took 5-10 minutes for the sloth to cross half the road
b) it was covered in bugs and algae and had long sharp claws - no way were we going to pick that thing up

Watch what you think (Blog Entry by eric3579)

1) Germany killed 6 million Jews, many of which were from Prague. If there is any justification for zero tolerance on anti-semitism, that would be it. In principle, I agree with you.

2) I've got no gripes with the reporting here. If convicted, this is not right.

3) There is a big difference between being charged with a crime and being found guilty. If this guy is convicted, then you have a story, and I agree with you. Otherwise, he is innocent until proven guilty and this story is nothing more than agit-prop.

4) Welcome to the world of the protester. I know several protesters who have been arrested and it's not a big deal. It's an expected part of the protest experience and more common than you think. I would guess that these particular protesters probably got better treatment than most protesters (no tear gas, riot police, tazer guns or billy clubs). The 45 years thing is pure bullshit, and who ever told that to you was trying to manipulate you. If any of these protesters spend a single day in prison beyond their initial arrest, I will eat my hat.

In general, political fringe news sites such as World Net Daily, Raw Story, Human Events Online, etc. are not the best source material. They just aren't trustworthy. There are plenty of respected partisan political publications that you can source if you must, such as the conservative 'National Review' or the liberal 'Nation', but citing WND is only going to make people dismiss your views as flat out BS. It's better to stick to sources with wide and varied readership. It lessens the echo chamber effect.

As for 'http://www.romea.cz', if the site looks like a tripod homepage, no one is going to buy it.

If you can't find a good source for something, I wouldn't blog about it. Just sayin'

If you want a good case on thought crime that has been well covered and analyzed from many perspectives, google 'Jose Padilla'.

I respect your opinions, but this post seems like the kind of vague agit-prop I used to get from conservative relatives (before I started making my rebuttals re: all. ). You are better than this, Eric.

Chavez calls President Bush 'the devil' on UN assembly

Farhad2000 says...

Right let's be factual.

"Venezuela's parliament, dominated by supporters of President Hugo Chavez, has begun its final debate on proposed changes to the constitution. The changes would remove term limits for the presidency, and extend the term of office from six years to seven.

The assembly on Tuesday added 25 amendments to a previous 33 passed by Congress, including proposals to detain citizens without charge in emergencies. If passed, all the measures will be put to a popular referendum in December.

There are no opposition politicians in the Venezuelan National Assembly, since most of the anti-Chavez parties boycotted the last election in 2005. However, several members of parliament have questioned the way these late changes have been introduced, calling it constitutional fraud. "

Mr Chavez said the changes were "imperative to the revolution" and would help make the country more socialist. One of the most controversial amendments would allow the president sweeping powers during a state of emergency.

The international organisation Human Rights Watch has condemned this, saying under international law all countries have to guarantee certain freedoms at all times. "Recent Latin American history shows that it is precisely during states of emergency that countries need strong judicial protections to prevent abuse," said HRW Americas director, Jose Miguel Vivanco.

Also on Tuesday, a long-standing critic of the president, Roman Catholic Cardinal Rosalio Castillo Lara, died, aged 85. He had consistently spoken out against Mr Chavez, saying the president was increasingly authoritarian and "fundamental democratic principles [were] ignored or violated".

For his part, the president called Cardinal Castillo Lara "a hypocrite, bandit and devil with a cassock".

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7048229.stm

On August 15, 2007, Chavez called for an end to presidential term limits to extend his rule and consolidate a self-styled socialist revolution in Venezuela. He also proposed eliminating central bank autonomy, strengthening state expropriation powers and giving himself control over international reserves as part of an overhaul of Venezuela's constitution.

Appealing to the masses, then coercing that trust into fulfilling selfish aims is the mark of every dictator known to mankind. Am so tired of this endless drivel that Hugo Chavez is just a saintly person, nothing corrupts like power. The sweeping nationalist powers that Chavez would enjoy would allow him to claim any number of emergency states (e.g. foreign threats) to garner absolute power overnight. The Myth of Saint Chavez is already complete, the poor have rallied around him and will do as he wishes regardless what that could mean for V's future state of democracy.

oh I just can't resist a good necropost -

Jose Padilla is a U.S. citizen. Under which U.S. laws would you deny him the rights guaranteed under the Constitution? Would those be the same ones used to try Tim McVeigh? That nutcase at least had access to a lawyer.

The Nines Trailer

Fletch says...

Ok, I had this idea for a movie script that this dude, see, kept seeing the same number over and over, ya know, like it drove him crazy and stuff and he didn't know what it meant. I was gonna call it "23", and for obvious reasons I can't call it that now can I, thank you very much. So I changed it to "Nine", even thought a backwards "e" would look cool on a marquee and everything, but now I can't use that one either, can I, thank you very much. I bet you'd all like to know what I'm calling it now, huh, but no way Jose, because I think someone must be intercepting my interweb postings on the internets and selling my cool number script ideas to clueless directors like the one who totally fucked up "23". I may have to incorporate the greek alphabet...

You know... I saw them perform this in San Jose once, and in one of the really high throws, where it involved a big toss, jump and tumble, and catch by the same person, they missed it on the first try. Now, they picked right back up again like a good performer, did the stunt again, and everything went great. (not knocking the performer at all - they are highly talented!)

I noticed something really amazing, though, and that was the band. They are playing live to all of this, and had a big drum and orchestra "hit" when the catch happened in the song. When she missed the catch, though, they didn't play it! Somehow, in the quarter-second they had, the noticed she didn't make it and kept on playing the theme they were on, looped back 16 bars or so, and played it again for her! All perfectly seamless!

I know some of the musicians couldn't see the action, either, so it was all though the conductor. It was really amazing to watch. I've seen a lot of really good musicians, but this live "catch and correct" they did was incredible.
