Watch Elon Musk's Rocket Explode After Launch

Harzzach says...

The damage was so massive that they have to rebuild entire portions of the Texas Launch Site. It's quite possible that the immediate failure of several engines on one side was caused by debris from the launch pad.

How build launch durable pads, especially when using powerful engines, isnt something we have to learn first by making mistakes. This is basic engineering 101 at NASA.

While i still cant get enough from vertically landing rocket stages and i deeply respect the work of Space-X engineers ... this ongoing, absolute reckless launch safety strategy (or should i say the lack of) does not bode well for manned missions.

The launch pad and surrounding area was a mess with debris and a car was damaged some distance away from the launch pad.

Why Geography Makes The US Insanely OP

bobknight33 says...

There are many places with abundant resources. So to me the true questions is would America be as great if we had some other form of government? To me It all stems from our Constitution which lends itself to to capitalism. Each is free to do as they see fit to earn or profit. Would America be as great under Socialism? Fascism? Communism? Granted our government is corrupt but then again find a government system that isnt.

Why I’m ALL-IN On Tesla Stock

vil says...

TLDR Printing money is not a solution to anything, also it is not the reason the economy sucks.

Oh yeah, Tesla stock, isnt there a rule of thumb where youre not meant to invest more than 20% of your funds in one vehicle? (insert pun apology)

If by all-in you mean investing all your stock funds in tesla, while you own your house (land?) and keep your pension plan and short term savings and long term non-stock investments intact then go for it! May you live in interesting times!

Obama, Trump, voter now blames Biden

vil says...

Voted for Obama then Trump, now unhappy with Biden because of inflation that somehow also causes a bathtub shortage?

Its nice to have someone to blame when you have no clue.

Also if Biden is incompetent (I dare not judge) at pushing a positive agenda isnt that better than someone who was incompetent at pushing a horrible one?

#shorts The Best

I’m 100% Serious

Isnt bribing politicians to make a behind the scenes deal exactly the swamp Trump promised to drain?

Lets fight this one out and find a middle ground to stand on instead.

* sigh *

The results were verified repeatedly, the court challenges were shot down like my chances with Judy Hopps, and there's never been a single shred of evidence that anything untoward happened.

Where's your evidence that it wasn't above board?

this mask isnt for stopping the spread of infection. its for training in low oxygen environments or at altitude, so you perform better when surrounded by more oxygen.

newtboy said:

unfortunately they all have front mounted discharge valves, allowing spit and phlegm to spray out at face level when you breath hard, cough, or sneeze, almost like there's no mask at all. These masks are useless to stop the spread and should be labeled clearly indicating that. It's similar to the idiots who wear mesh masks pretend they're functional.
For a mask to work against covid spreading, it must filter exhalation of all droplets, those with exhaust ports do nothing.

The Gamestop Short Squeeze in 4 Minutes

vil says...

Why. Why are hedge funds allowed to play in a room full of gasoline and the "stupid public" isnt?

Neither of them are any better than monkeys with typewriters.

If a hedge fund can and does promise to buy back 140 % of some stock then it should be held to that promise and not bailed out.

This mostly boils down to information not moving freely in a "free" market and people making decisions without access to or understanding of vital information. Well theyre fucked.

You seem to allude to more regulation being necessary but its mostly the big operators on the market that need to be better regulated. Blaming the public is a side step.

Stephen Colbert and Trump's Thursday Night Liefest

vil says...

Donald Trump IS the Q. You know, of QAnon.

Also the Q of IQ. Lacking in I.

Also Donald Trump probably has good analytics telling him how he stands so he knows he is drowning before he hits the water. His reactions seem adequately correlated to the situation and projections - only they are just as chaotic and dumb as his 4 years in office.

Even the hysterical orange man should know to wait for the actual result before ranting. So he already knew it was done at that stage. His campaign understands the mechanics of vote counting, they are just out to cause damage now. Rudy knows how vote counting works, he is bullshitting hard. The content of what Rudy and Jr. say is irrelevant. Like John McEnroe ranting at the umpire. I would love to write "youre out!" but it still isnt officially over, is it?

Also this will be no victory over Trump or common ignorancy. This is just saving a horror of a situation by a hairs breadth. A feeling of relief rather than victory.

Bill Maher's election predictions on Jimmy Kimmel

diego says...

agreed.

I would add that science/doctors have been pushed out by the administration from day one, to the point that they use it to attack biden ("he's going to listen to the scientists!")

also, the inconsistency he is referring to for example in restaurants and flights, is entirely driven by economics, not science. Those are two of the hardest hit industries worldwide, you have a president who has made it clear he prioritises business over public health, of course they made some theatrical protocol to make it seem safer when really, its not.
(same in my country, and having a bakery myself have had to do the same stupid dance).

Pointing at the survival of christie, trump or any other celebrity, no matter how overweight, old or whatever, is not analogous to the experience of normal people who cant afford that level of treatment, most wouldnt have access to it even if they could afford it. not to mention that we dont even really know long term effects for survivors, including importantly how long the immune response lasts.

That whole segment just came off as the typical selfish "i dont think this will kill me, lets get back to normal" BS. Weve known for a long time now that what makes coronavirus dangerous isnt its mortality rate, its the combination of a long asymptomatic incubation period and airbone transmission that make it highly contagious, when hospitals collapse the mortality rate spikes.

I actually agree that we have to learn to live with this because i dont think a vaccine is nowhere near close to ready for global deployment, but i thought his arguments were terrible and his focus selfish.

***finally anecdotal experience here in Chile, 3 friends have gotten covid-
44 year old, former national team field hockey, good shape
41 year old, former point guard national team basketball, good shape
38 year old, professional poker player, overweight bordering on obese.

the 44 year old was in the hospital for 12 days, no ventilator, felt aches and pains for a solid month after going home
the 41 year old was in the hospital for 28 days, ventilator (and the induced coma that comes with it), still feels physically drained
the 38 year old had a fever for 3 days and never went to the hospital, is feeling fine

Between different strains and different body/blood types, comparing one case to another doesnt seem to work

I think Bill's attack on the science/health experts is misguided.

Not that Bill's wrong, mind you. IF you have a good internal (immune) system you'll have a better chance of fighting it off, but

1) that's NOT a guarantee you won't get sick.
2) DOESN'T mean you won't help spread it by being all gun-ho about it, and
3) USA being what it is -- the number of over-weight, obese are just staggering -- what's the point for the health experts to say/shame people with, er, "their pre-conditions" are to blame NOW? How's that gonna help?

Besides, the health experts have been promoting healthy, active living for ages. They're not "cowards" because the people don't listen to them.

It's mind-bogging to me how narcissistic and self-centered American society is. If people just pay any attention outside of American media, they should know how to handle Covid-19.
