People still claim health benefits from circumcision. Why? so you too can mutilate your kids? One nurse told us (about our newborn) to pull the foreskin back regularly to clean underneath! Craziness! The doctor told us pull it back no more than enough to expose the tip for any cleaning. That foreskin stays put and seals off the rest of the head until you are horny enough in puberty to pull it back yourself (not very painful when you are horny, believe me). This is probably similar in function to the hymen in that it makes for a smaller chance of an infection.

@farhad: Yeah, it's amazing what mass amounts of ignorance can do to a society. All those beliefs and more, plus the fact that in some places rape is not a particularly uncommon thing. I get a headache just thinking about it...

@mjasonprickett: Crichton wasn't lying, hymen-restoration surgery existed long before that, since people figured out how to stitch skin together in the first place. However, it wasn't just the belief that sex with a virgin would cure syphilis (although that was a factor), some men just enjoyed the idea. Also, I'm not positive of the actual percentage of prostitutes who did stitch themselves back up, and I know that surgery wasn't the only option. Since many men wouldn't notice the hymen tearing and instead relied on the blood, there were some prostitutes that inserted bloody sponges into their vaginas and squeezed when their clients entered them, to give the appearance of the hymen's break. Sick.
