That is astounding. I once saw a home improvement show where the contractor doing the reno of a kitchen turned off the breaker to the stove, only to find that the stove was still live. The previous guy who move the stove in the kitchen had basically wired the store directly into the mains. I think they had to cut filming while he went outside to lose his shit.

I am no electrician, but I had several uncles teach me the basics of wiring at a young age and it has served me well on the simple things around the house. Anything beyond that, I have an excellent electrical contractor that I use.

i know the feeling from back when i did home improvement work. if i was on site and i could not do any work due to the rain/snow, i would always have one twisted in my truck. one time i had someone smoking a cigarette in my truck and they opened my ashtray and saw that it was full of roaches. i was a heavier consumer back in the 90's. >> ^BoneRemake:

I live in semi-detached housing, and my next-door neighbour is really into home improvements. This morning I woke to the joyous sounds of a pneumatic drill being used to dig up concrete in his back garden. I responded in kind by playing Queen's Platinum Collection with the volume turned to about half-way. If my house is going to shake due to a disturbance then I'd rather it was my subwoofer doing the work and not some builders!

Know what you're saying about people causing mayhem just because they won't talk to us directly. Asking other people to confront things on our behalf should be a last resort, why should someone else do something for me if I've not even bothered to try sort it out myself first? Like you say, a quick discussion could have led to an easy compromise to keep everyone happy.

I could easily start on a rant about the state of modern society and how the community element has been eroded with people becoming more content to hide in their own little family bubble, and sometimes not even family beyond partner and children. People adopting the opinion that events are nothing to do with them, walking right on by other people's misfortunes without a second thought given to offering some assistance. Some things never change and maybe what I observe today is what has been happening all along, maybe so but I really wish people would be more inclusive, not reclusive.

Listening to the conclusions of both sides is exactly what the scientific method is.


Actually, the scientific method requires reproducible results from a methodology that withstands peer review. Who counts as a "peer" is a bit of an elitist meritocracy, but suffice to say ad hominem arguments like "Exxon-Mobile funded you" don't factor into the critique of these so-called studies. Generally, the critique of these studies comes from methodology that is either demonstrably flawed, or not explained within the study (which makes the study worth less than the paper it's printed on).

The fact that those junk studies are often funded by oil and coal companies is more of an argument for the political arena.

But since we're at the "I have experts who agree with me, and so do you, so obviously it's just a matter of personal belief" impasse that gets manufactured into this debate, let's try a bit of Pascal's wager.

Maybe Global Warming might not be real. But what if it is? What if doing nothing will cause global famine, and skyrocketing energy prices? Wouldn't you rather try to conserve, and support government incentives for clean energy, in order to prevent it?

If you're wrong, all you have is cleaner air, more efficient use of energy around your home & office, and potentially a source of renewable energy that isn't reliant on finite fossil fuel resources. There'd also be an economic expansion into "green industry" that works on things like carbon offsets, energy efficient homes (and home improvement), and alternative energy which would create jobs and bring profits to investors.

That's more or less the rhetoric John McCain used, before he became Mr. Driller (and likely will continue to use despite that).

The resistance to addressing environmental concerns seems very short sighted to me, even when it comes from those who stand to benefit directly from a continued reliance on fossil fuels.

Actually, gold is at an all-time high, and analysts say it's hit its peak (sorry!).

I'll repeat the good advice I saw on CNN when they first were talking about these things.

In order of priority, they recommend you use your check to:

1. Pay any late/outstanding bills
2. Pay down high-interest debt (like from credit cards)
3. Perform maintenance on your car you might be behind on
4. Buy durable goods (i.e. energy-saving household appliances, or other home improvements)
5. Put it in your 401(k) or other investment plan
6. Or, if you think you need to be patriotic and stimulate the economy, use it to take a vacation within the U.S.

Just keep in mind that this money is not a gift, it's an advance on whatever refund you would have gotten in 2009 when you file your 2008 taxes. In other words, if you normally get $300 back when you file, and you got a $600 "rebate", expect to owe $300 to Uncle Sam on Apr 15, 2009.

edit: This money is a gift, sorta. It's a one-time tax cut, and the rebate is an estimated savings based on your 2007 income that you get now, instead as part of your refund next year. The math should work out such that you still get the same rebate you would normally expect, though the math will be a little wackier than normal. In cases where they overestimated your tax cut benefit, you will not have to pay back the difference, while still getting reimbursed if your benefit was underestimated. Good for us in the short term, but this means it's just another cost being heaped on the national debt.

Let's not forget that both of their final choices are not countries. Africa is a continent, not a country.
