Elite Dangerous Galactic Exploration Heatmap

ChaosEngine says...

Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space.
-- Douglas Adams, Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy

Space; It seems to go on and on forever...but then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you.
-- Fry, Futurama

Basically there's lots of space.

All those players, all that time, and yet they've only explored .005% of the galaxy.

the urantia book-an introduction

enoch says...

@vil
i was going to reference hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, because the parallels are there, except without the humor.

i have read many a sacred text, and even though the book of urantia is written in a similar format,it read more like a government procedural book than anything.i simply could not get far into the book at all.

still,as a text that lays out the workings of the universe,i felt i should add this book to the pile.

no fantastical stories of resurrection,or miracles,or interventions by a supreme being.just a break down of your basic universe's bureaucracy.

THE AMIGA YEARS!

Grimm says...

My Amiga 2000 is stashed away in a closet somewhere. Also had a 500 at one time but eventually sold that.

Shadow of the Beast was a classic and many other impressive games from Psygnosis...graphics and the music.

Lemmings, Out of this World, Monkey Island, Dune II, Stunt Car Racer...even liked the text based Infocom games like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and The Lurking Horror.

Oh man. you're putting me on the spot with that question. I traded 1/2 ownership of a 128mac for my brother's old apple 2 and a shoe box of floppy's. I didn't go through 1/2 of them before I got kicked out of the house and he took it all back. I remember a few text games...hitchhikers guide among them. I think also defender, Montezuma's revenge sounds familiar, Wolfenstien, Beyond Wolfenstien, Cannonball Blitz, Centipede, choplifter, crystal castles, frogger, galaxian, joust, kung fu master, leisure suit larry in the land of the lounge lizards, lode runner, missile defense, moon patrol, qix, tapper, ultima (maybe ultima 2), and zork. That's all I recognize from the list.

What other Apple 2 games did you played? Here's what I played that I could re(member/call): Wings of Fury, Diamond Mine, Kareteka, Montezuma's Revenge, Aztec, Gemstone Warrior, Conan O'Brien (think I submitted it here), Ancient Art of War (a pastor gave me that game haha), Boulder Dash, Champion Ship Lode Runner (finished and got a paper certificate), etc.

It makes you wonder if it might not have been less expensive to replace animatronic seal, chipmunk, and swimming girl with the real thing. I can only guess hes very good at negotiating contracts. Still, incredibly impressive.

Yeah, I didn't understand the point of the swimming girl either. By the way, does anyone know what that last film was?

Ewww! I Mean - Plucking 3 Big Chickens in Less Than A Minute

arghness says...

20 years ago or more, as a child, I predicted that meat would be grown ready to eat on shop shelves, for reasons of convenience and freshness. Perhaps I was inspired by the Dish of the Day in the Restauarant at the End of the Universe in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

In 2002 they engineered chickens with no feathers, but now they are seriously talking about growing meat http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15402552. The reason isn't for convenience or freshness, but due to the resources required to raise animals and the pollution caused.

I admire beyond description the artists behind the camera who so wonderfully capture the everyday beauty of ordinary people.

Also, nerd highfive to the 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' reference.

What Are Your Top 5 Books? (Books Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

1. Dune - Frank Herbert
The best exploration of power and control I have read.

2. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress - Robert A. Heinlein
A manual for revolutionary action.

3. Starship Troopers - Robert A. Heinlein
Exploration of militaristic society and fascism.

4. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
Don't panic.

5. The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint Exupéry
I found this magical when young.

Special mention: Guards Guards Guards by Terry Prachett, Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke, 2001 by Arthur C. Clarke and probably more I cannot recall now.

This list is flexible and totally depended on my largely failing memory of what I read, there was a thread like this before and my answers could be different. My most recent read list has been composed mainly of non fiction dealing with war on terror and the US campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I can never, ever remember the best ones when quizzed like this. Same goes for best movies etc.

Ones I have liked of late are (in no order):
The Dark Tower series: Stephen King
The Book Thief: Marcus Zusak
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: Dave Eggers (Currently reading another of his books actually)
The Mars Trilogy: Kim Stanley Robinson
LOTR: Tolkien
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy: Douglas Adams
Many Discworld novels: Terry Pratchett
Dune: Frank Herbert
The Dressmaker: Rosalie Ham (An Australian gothic novel, just brilliant, I'd love to see this made into a film)
2010: Arthur C Clarke (Yeah, I like it better than 2001, sue me)

But inevitably someone will mention some book and I'll go 'AAAH, yeah, LOVED that one'!... so yeah, there are many others that I'm sure should be here, and probably in place of others here... (I just scrolled up and added some that others had put, because I'd forgotten them)...

Catch 22 : I just wanted to say that for all the praise that this book gets, I couldn't get through it. He made his points, set up his things, and then seemed to repeat the same damn jokes/observations over and over and over again to the point where I just stopped reading it... sorry, but it bored me. Good start, lost me soon after.
